What is lipoma?

Lipoma is a growth of fatty tissues. These tissues develop under your skin in a slow process. Even though it may occur at different ages, but it is not seen in case of children. It can show up on any part of the body but generally they are seen on the neck, back, arms, abdomen, shoulders and thighs. It is a benign tumor, which means it does not cause cancer. It is rarely harmful to the patient.

Causes and risk factors

Lipoma is a fatty tissue tumor and the exact cause of this medical problem is not yet known. However, there are certain risk factors associated with this condition. If you have a family history of the condition, the possibility of you having the skin lump will increase. It is also more frequent in adults who are 40 to 60 years old.

There are some conditions which may increase the possibility of you having lipoma. Such conditions are-

  • Adiposis dolorosa
  • Cowden syndrome
  • Gardner's syndrome
  • Madelung disease

Is it possible to separate lipoma from other skin growths?

Even though you may suffer from different types of tumors on your skin, it is possible to differentiate lipoma from other skin problems because it has distinct characteristics. The following characteristics will help you to understand whether you’re suffering from lipoma or not-

  • The tumors are soft and they move easily when you touch with your finger
  • They are small
  • They are present just under the skin
  • Colorless or pale

You can also confirm lipoma problems by checking its location. It is most commonly found in the neck, shoulders, and back and only sometimes they are seen on the thighs, stomach and arms. It is generally not painful. It can be painful only if the tumors grow into nerves.

Diagnosis of lipoma

Diagnosis of lipoma is easy because a physical exam will help you to find it. It is not painful. It feels like dough. It also moves easily because it is composed of fatty tissues.

Your dermatologist may ask for a biopsy of the tumor. A small portion is taken from the tumor and then tested in a laboratory to eliminate the possibility of cancer. It is good to do that because in some cases lipoma may resemble liposarcoma, which is cancerous. However, liposarcomas can be easily differentiated because they are painful.

In some cases MRIs and CT scans may also be needed to make sure it is lipoma only.

Treatment of lipoma

There are several different treatment options available for treating those lumps. If dermatologist is the right person to decide about the treatment options if you are visiting him. Several different factors may decide what course he recommends for treatment of the tumors. These factors include-

  • The size of the lumps
  • Personal or family history of skin cancer
  • Number of tumors
  • If it is painful

Surgery

A lipoma can be surgically removed. It is the most common procedure. This method is useful only if you have a big skin tumor and it is still growing.

Liposuction

Liposuction can help you to get rid of lipomas. As the tumors are fat based, liposuction can help you to get rid of such tumors. In this procedure, the area to be undergone treatment is numbed and then a needle attached to a large syringe is used to get rid of the fat.

Steroid injections

Steroid injections are also used on the affected areas to shrink the lipomas. They, however, cannot completely remove the tumors.

Rosacea is seen mostly in case of fair skinned people. Some researchers also link Rosacea with migraines, eye disorders, skin problems etc.

Go for a walk

Scientists have already established links between exercise and feeling good. During exercise, hormones like dopamine endorphins are released. These are known as feel-good hormones. They can help you if you’re suffering from mild to moderate depression.

despair-513529_640

Even though exercising when you’re depressed may seem very difficult, if you can drive yourself to do some exercises, it will help you to feel better. When you cannot go for vigorous exercise like running or exercising in the gym, you can always go for something easier, such as walking. Even a little brisk walk will help you to improve your mood. If possible, try a brisk walk for 30 minutes every day. Do it five times a week and see the positive influence it has on your depression. If it is possible, walk with someone you care about. It will release the love hormone oxytocin in the brain, which will improve your mood.

Learn relaxation techniques

To attack the psychological aspects of depression, you need relaxation techniques. Relaxing the muscles and deep breathing are some of the relaxation techniques that will help you to improve your mood. Deep, slow and rhythmic breathing will help you to calm your mind and fight depression. Inhale air through the nose and exhale through your mouth. Deep muscle relaxation is a relaxation technique that helps everyone. It relaxes your body deeply. Yoga and tai chi are also some good ways to relax your body. It is always better to take a class because that way you can meet some more people.

Divide tasks into small steps

Dividing tasks into smaller steps will help you to fight depression. In depression, a very common symptom is the feeling of being overwhelmed. You may feel overwhelmed even by your day to day tasks. Once you feel overwhelmed by your daily tasks, you may become withdrawn and less active. The best way to fight it is to break down the big activity into some small activities which can easily be done. Write down the things in a step-by-step list form and tried to complete only one thing at a time. It will also benefit you by giving you the feeling of getting more things done when you complete the things from the list.

Connect with more people

Depression results in withdrawal and people suffering from depression cut themselves off from the outside world. They start to talk less and become less sociable. This can be a vicious cycle and the less time you spend with other people, the less time you want to spend with other people. That is why you need to socialize and connect with more people even though you don’t want to.

Connection is a basic emotional need and without it you will have other psychological problems. At the first signs of depression, it is very important that you start building relationship with other people. You can start being that from your family, friends and loved ones. It will be a support network and it will be very much necessary for you. Talk to other people about your problems and if necessary get their help.

Challenge negative thoughts

When you are depressed, negative thinking becomes the normal thing for you. But negative thinking and obsessing on thoughts which are not helpful will not help you in any way. These are the two common symptoms of depression.

What you need to do is shift focus of your mind. If you need to reclaim your power over your mind and body, you will need to shift your focus and look at the problem from a different perspective. It works.

Identify your thoughts and challenge your negative thoughts. It won’t be easier but neither is getting out of depression. If you focus your attention towards gratitude, you will start to feel better and you will see the positive aspects of your life. It will help you to see how blessed your life is in comparison to many other people.

Lucid dreaming

Can you be conscious in your dreams? Aren’t dreams different than our normal life?

We dream many things. Some are good, some are bad. When you get up, we realize that it was just a dream. Lucid dreams are different from normal dreams. In these dreams, you know that you are dreaming. These are very much different from your ordinary dreams. You can compare it with waking up in your dreams.

moon-478982_640

A real dream?

Dutch psychiatrist Frederik van Eeden coined the term lucid dreaming in 1913. From his description of lucid dreaming, it can be implied that consciousness may be there during sleep. Research found that lucid dreams are you dreams. And they happen during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is seen during deep sleep.

Becoming a lucid dreamer

Surveys done by scientists have found that about 50% of people at least had one lucid dream in their lives. Many methods have been developed to teach people how to have a lucid dream.

Techniques that will help you master the skill

Keep a dream diary

Once you wake up, you should write down everything that you can remember. Why should you do that? It will help you to identify dream signs. You’ll find out as packs which will let you know that you are dreaming. Next time, when you see the signs, you’ll be able to understand that you are actually dreaming.

Reality checks

As a lucid dreamer, you can do a reality check by using a reminder. For example, you can look at your hand and ask yourself ‘Am I dreaming?’ Several times in a day. In your dream, your hand will not look the same twice, which will help you to understand that you are in a dream and will take you to lucidity.

Another reality check that you can do is reading. You cannot read in your dreams. It is because reading is a left brain skill and dreaming is done by the right brain.

The mild method

Stephen LaBerge, scientists and sleep researcher develop the Mnemonic Initiated Lucid Dream (MILD) technique. In this technique, you try to fall back to sleep and go to a lucid dream after having a vivid dream, which you can remember. We use prospective memory in this case. The prospective memory is helping us when we tried to wake up at a specific time and go to bed determined about waking up at that time.

“Wake-up, back to bed” method

G Scott Sparrow, lucid dreaming author, talks about a technique which is known as “wake-up, back to bed.” Researchers have found that when you sleep, then wake up, then go back to sleep again; it increases the possibility of lucidity. You can use this matter by setting your alarm few hours earlier than your usual wake-up time. Then you can engage yourself in some wakeful activity for some time and then you can go back to bed with a desire to dream.

Sometimes a subtle change in the surroundings may also help you achieve prompt lucidity. You can move your pillow to the opposite end. Any small change which disrupts your routine can cause lucid dreaming and you can “wake up” in your dream.

If you are suffering from sleep apnea, then you might be suffering from lack of sleep. Even though it may seem as if it is not a big deal lack of sleep can cause severe problems in your life.

baby-22194_640

Lack of sleep

Do you often forget things? Is it difficult for you to concentrate? Is it difficult for you to sleep because of sleep apnea and you often get less than six hours of sleep? It means you’re not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause problems with your logical thinking and emotion handling capabilities. Excessive sleepiness resulting from lack of sleep due to sleep apnea can cause problems in your work life, relationships and can cause other mood problems like depression and anger.

Effects

Lack of sleep negatively affects your cognitive and mental health. Even though many people consider sleep as a luxury, it is not true. You will notice it yourself. When you get a good night’s sleep, you feel good and when you don’t get it, you feel worse.

Sleep can help you to improve your learning, insight and memory. When you sleep, you are adding more energy to your body. Taking rest helps you to save and add more energy to your energy bank. When you’re sleeping your body is repairing and restoring itself. If the repairing and restoring is not done completely, how can you feel good? If you are not recharged properly, you cannot perform better both physically and mentally.

The impact of chronic sleepiness

Sleepiness reduces your thought processes

If you are feeling sleepy because of sleep deprivation due to sleep apnea, it will reduce your alertness and concentration. When that happens, it won’t be possible for you to focus and pay attention and you will be confused. It will also hamper your ability to do things that need logical reasoning and complex thinking.

It will also impact your judgment. You will not be able to take quick and good decisions.

Sleepiness impacts your memory

Scientists have found that nerve connections are necessary to improve our memories and strengthen them. And that happens during your sleep. Whatever you have learned or experienced during that they are embedded into your short-term memory when you sleep. When you are sleepy, you forget things misplace them. When you are not able to focus and concentrate, your memory is further weakened.

Learning becomes difficult due to poor sleep

If you’re suffering from sleep apnea, you should be very careful because for sleep will hamper your ability to learn. You cannot focus and so it becomes more difficult for you to pick of information and as a result you cannot learn. Since it also affects your memory, it becomes increasingly difficult for you to learn new things. In case of children sleepiness can cause hyperactivity.

Slowed reaction time

People suffering from sleep apnea are at high risk of auto accidents.

Sleepiness and your mood and mental health

Lack of sleep directly affects your mood. You become more and easily irritated, you get angry faster and you lose the ability to cope with stress. People who suffer from sleepiness due to sleep deprivation are more likely to shout and quarrel with other people, especially in traffic jams.

Types of ankle sprains

A sprained ankle means ligaments which are present on the outer side of your ankle were probably torn or stretched. You cannot ignore it because it can result in long-term problems in the future. Ankle sprains can be of two types- inversion sprain that happens when the ankle is rolled inward or eversion sprain, when the ankle is rolled outward. In case of inversion sprains, you will feel pain on the outer side of the ankle. These are the most common types of ankle sprains. If you feel pain on the inner side of the ankle, it may mean a more serious injury to your ligaments or tendons. We should immediately consult a doctor if you are having that kind of pain.

How do you sprain your ankle?

In most of the cases you sprain your ankle the toes are on the ground and the heel is up. The ligaments of the ankle feel too much of pressure in this position. In such cases, they become vulnerable. If you land on an uneven surface, and your ankle is turned inward, ligaments of your ankle may be hurt.

Fracture and sprain

It is difficult to differentiate a sprain from a fracture or broken bone. You need x-ray to find out whether it’s a sprain or a fracture. If you see significant swelling, deformity or if you are not able to stand on your feet after the injury, you should immediately go to your doctor. A simple x-ray may help the doctor to find out the nature of the injury.

Treatment of sprained ankle

Treatment of the sprained ankle is very much important if you want to prevent stability and chronic pain. You can do the following to create your sprained ankle-

Rest

You should rest your ankle and should not walk on it. Also, do not lift any weight. If necessary, you can use crutches, but you should do that only if there is no fracture. You can also use an ankle brace as it will help you to control swelling. It also helps in healing of your ligaments.

Ice

Ice your ankle because it will help you to control swelling. However, you should not put ice directly on your skin. You can use a thin cloth between the skin and the ice bag. You should not ice your feed more than 20 minutes or otherwise you may suffer from frostbite.

Compression

Compression is helpful in reducing the swelling. It also supports your injury.

Elevate

You need to elevate your foot. Elevate it above your waist or to a height as needed.

Swelling of your foot will reduce after a few days.

Rehabilitation of a sprained ankle

Rehabilitation is needed whenever there is an injury to ligaments. If you want your sprained ankle to heal completely and avoid re injury, you need to rehabilitate your sprained ankle.
