 A recent study found that higher levels of two common chemicals found in almost all homes may cause problems for your kids. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) are the two chemicals present in different common household products. If your children are exposed to these two chemicals, their IQ may suffer.

The study

The study found that children are exposed to higher levels of DnBP and DiBP, had the IQ score 6 points lower on average than children exposed at lower levels. The researchers at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, found the shocking information during a study. The study is also the first that reported a relationship between prenatal exposure to phthalates and IQ in children of school age. The results of the study were published in the Journal PLOS ONE.

The study followed 328 New York City women and their children. The study analyzed the exposure of these women to 4 phthalates- DnBP, DiBP, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, and diethyl phthalate. The first exposure study was done in the third trimester of pregnancy. The researchers measured metabolites of the chemicals in urine. The children in the study underwent IQ test at age 7.

What’s It

DnBP and DiBP are present in different types of consumer products such as dryer sheets and vinyl fabrics. They are also present in various personal care products such as hairspray, lipstick and nail polish. These chemicals are also present in some soaps.

Starting from 2009, different phthalates have been banned from difference childcare articles including children’s toys. However, there is no regulation regarding the use of these chemicals to safeguard the fetus. There is no step taken to alert the pregnant women to the potential exposure and the problems that may arise out of it.

There is another problem-phthalates are very rarely listed in the ingredient list in case of products even though they’re used.

The findings

The study found that children of mothers who were exposed to the highest 25% of DnBP and DiBP concentration during their pregnancy showed IQs 6.6 and 7.6 points lower, respectively in comparison to the children of mothers who were exposed to lowest 25% of concentration. This result was achieved after handling different factors like maternal IQ, the quality of the home environment, maternal education etc., which impact the IQ of the child. The study also found that different aspects of IQ like working memory, perception reasoning and processing speed also has association with the two phthalates in question. However, there was no association found between the other two phthalates and child IQ.

It is common for pregnant women to get exposed to phthalates everyday. Many of them are exposed to levels which were found to substantially reduce the IQ of children.

The decline in IQ in children as a result of exposure to such phthalates is very disturbing. A decline of six or seven points in IQ can have crucial consequences for academic achievement and potential for occupation. There are some regulations that ban phthalates from toys of children; you won’t find any regulation to ban exposure during pregnancy. Since this is a very sensitive period in case of rain development, it is very important to ensure that phthalates are not present in high levels or not at all present in the common household products that pregnant women can be exposed to every day.

Under most conditions, as an athlete, you hydration need will be satisfied by fluids of 550 to 800 ml per hour. If you’re working out in a cold weather, you may need a little more than half of this amount. If you’re working out in a very hot and humid condition and you are big athlete with a big body, then you may need 900 ml.

If you regularly intake near about 1 L fluid every hour, it may increase the possibility of serious performance and health problems. Your body will have a problem in dealing with excess fluid or water in your body.

Reduce calorie intake to 300 cal per hour

You need to reduce your calorie intake to 300 cal per hour during exercise. Your body is not able to process calorie intake at the same rate as your calorie expenditure. If you try hard to replace all the fuels you have lost, which means about 700 to 900 cal per hour, then you may suffer from bloating, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.

Shingles is also known as harpes zoster. This is a serious skin rash which happens due to attack of the varicella zoster virus. The same virus is also responsible for causing chickenpox. When someone suffers from chickenpox as a result of any attack by the virus, the virus stays in the body. The virus at times reappears and it causes nasty blisters known as shingles.

There are different ways to treat shingles.

1. Diagnose shingles

It is important to know the symptoms commonly associated with this problem to diagnose whether you are suffering from it or not. The most common symptoms of shingles include

  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Itching, tingling, irritation and pain. They happen when a rash starts developing. Such sensations happen only on one side of the body.

There are three stages associated with shingles. If you know the symptoms for each of these stages, it will be easier to diagnose them and offer treatment as and when necessary.

Stage 1-before the rash

The symptoms at this stage include itchiness, numbness, tingling, and pain in specific parts of your body. These are the areas where the rash will eventually develop. You may be at a higher risk of having shingles if you are using immunosuppressive drugs like steroids which are generally prescribed after an organ transplant. If you are suffering from any of the following conditions, you have a higher risk of having shingles-

  • Cancer
  • Lymphoma
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Leukemia

If you go to your doctor sooner, your diagnosis will be sooner and better. If you can start your treatment within three days of the symptoms appearing, you will have better results compared to people who wait for longer before starting the treatment for shingles.

Treating the rash while managing pain

Liver cirrhosis is fibrosis or scarring of the liver. A late stage of liver scarring is called as cirrhosis. It can be caused by different types of liver problems and conditions, including hepatitis and chronic alcohol abuse. The liver is a very important part of your body as it performs several important functions such as detoxification of your body by removing harmful substances, producing vital nutrients and cleaning your body.

Symptoms of liver cirrhosis

In general liver cirrhosis does not show any signs or symptoms. Symptoms appear only when the damage is extensive. The most important signs and symptoms of the problem include-

  • Fatigue
  • Swelling in your legs
  • Nausea
  • Bleeding easily
  • Itchy skin
  • Weight loss
  • Yellow discoloration in the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Fluid accumulation in your abdomen (ascites)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Confusion, drowsiness and slurred speech (hepatic encephalopathy)
  • Bruising easily
  • Spider-like blood vessels on your skin

Causes of liver cirrhosis

Cirrhosis happens when scar tissues form in the liver. If there is any damage to the liver, scar tissues start forming. Whenever the liver is injured, it starts repairing itself and in the process scar tissues starts forming. With more scar tissues, the general function of the liver is hampered and it cannot perform its crucial functions.

It is very important to find out the cause of cirrhosis because only then you can treat the underlying problem and prevent any further damage to your liver. Since different types of diseases can cause liver damage and lead to cirrhosis, so you need to know the exact cause of liver cirrhosis to handle it.

Some of the most common causes of cirrhosis are-

  • Chronic alcohol abuse
  • Destruction of the bile ducts (primary biliary cirrhosis)
  • Fat accumulating in the liver (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease)
  • Hepatitis C
  • Hardening and scarring of the bile ducts (primary sclerosing cholangitis)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Infection by a parasite common in developing countries (schistosomiasis)

 

Complications

Liver cirrhosis can result in several different complications. The complications in relation to blood flow are-

  • High blood pressure-high blood pressure is often seen in the veins that supply the liver. This condition is known as portal hypertension.
  • Swelling in the legs and abdomen-due to portal hypertension, accumulation of fluid may happen in the legs and in the abdomen.
  • Enlargement of the spleen
  • Bleeding due to small vein bursting
  • Infections, including serious infection like bacterial peritonitis
  • Malnutrition since your body is not able to process nutrients
  • Toxin buildup in the brain known as hepatic encephalopathy
  • Jaundice
  • Bone disease
