Fingernail fungus

Fingernail fungus is a common condition that affects many people every year. Initially it shows up as a white or yellow spot. It appears below the tip of fingernail. As the infection grows, it may make your nails discolored and thick. It may also cause crumble at the edges of your nails. If you are having thickened nails and there is pain, then you may need to self-care to eliminate it or go see a doctor.

However, it is possible that your infection may come back after some time. If the infection spreads to the areas between the skin of the feet and the toes, then it is known as athlete’s foot.

Nail Fungus

How do you find out if you have fingernail fungus?

There are some symptoms which will help you to find out if you have fingernail fungus. Look for the following symptoms-

  • Your nails are thickened
  • The nails are crumbly and brittle
  • They are distorted in shape
  • They look dull and there is no shine
  • The nails appear dark in color

Some patients also suffer from a condition in which the infected nails separate from their beds. This is a condition known as onycholysis. In such a situation, there will be pain in the fingertips and toes and there may be a slightly foul odor.

Do need to see the doctor?

If you have taken some self care steps, but even after that there is no respite, you should go and see a doctor. If you have diabetes and you are suffering from nail fungus, it is very important that you go and see your doctor.

What are the causes of fingernail fungus?

A dermatophyte fungus causes fingernail fungus. Sometimes yeasts and moulds can also cause such fungal infections.

A fungus is a microscopic organism that may cause different illness and infection. Some fungi are beneficial and they offer several different benefits.

Toenails and fingernail fungus

Generally, fingernail fungus is not as prevalent as toenail fungus. Since toenails are often kept in the dark, moist and warm environment in your shoes, fungus can easily grow in them. Less blood flow to the toes in comparison to fingers and so the immune system of your body may not easily detect and prevent any infection happening in the toenails.

Risk factors associated with fingernail fungus

The risk factors are those factors that can increase the possibility of fingernail fungus infection. Such factors include-

  • Older people who have less flow to the different organs
  • Heavy perspiration
  • Family history of fingernail fungus problem
  • Working environment. If your working environment is humid and moist and you often keep your hands wet, then there is a possibility of fingernail fungus.
  • Staying with someone with the fingernail fungus problem
  • Any minor skin or nail injury
  • Skin problems like psoriasis
  • Diabetic patients
  • People with circulation problems
  • Children
  • People with weakened immune system
  • People with Down syndrome

Complications

Sometimes, there may be complications resulting from fingernail fungus. If the attack is severe, it may cause permanent damage to the nails of your finger. It may also cause other serious infections. If you are suffering from a suppressed immune system resulting from diabetes, other medical condition or medication, the fungus may spread to other areas of your body.

People suffering from diabetes often see reduced blood circulation and in that case it may help in bacterial skin infection. A small, minor injury can cause other complications. Patients with diabetes and fingernail fungus should immediately see their doctors.

Before you go to your doctor

Before you visit your doctor to get advice on your anger nail fungus problem, you need to prepare well, so that you get the most out of your appointment with the doctor.

You should list your symptoms. Even though they are not related to fingernail fungus, you should list them out.

List your personal information, which should include any major life changes or stresses you are undergoing.

List all the medicines, supplements and vitamins you are taking.

If you have any questions to ask your doctor, write them down.

Tests and diagnosis

When you go to your doctor, the doctor will examine your nails. In some cases, the doctor may also scrape some debris from your nail and send it to a laboratory to find out what type of fungus is involved in the infection. If you are suffering from other skin problems like psoriasis, then it may look similar to fingernail fungus. Since yeast and bacteria can also cause similar infractions, your doctor will verify if you have fingernail fungus or not.

Treatments and medicines

If using self-care techniques and over-the-counter medicines do not help you to get rid of fingernail fungus, the doctor may advise a combination of prescription medicines and other ways. You need to remember that repeat infections in case of fingernail fungus are very common.

Medicines

Oral antifungal medicines

There are oral antifungal medicines available, which your doctor may prescribe for you. Terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox) are some of the most effective and prescribed medicines in case of fingernail fungus. They help in growing a new nail which will ultimately replace the infected nail. Such medicines are generally prescribed for 6 to 12 weeks. However, you will be able to see the final result only when the nail grows back completely. That is why; it may take about four months to completely cure an infection.

The success rates of such treatments may be lower in case of people who are over 65 years. The effectiveness of the treatment increases when you combine both oral and topical antifungal medicines. There may be some side-effects of oral antifungal medicines. To avoid any problem, you may need to undergo blood tests. If you’re suffering from a liver disease or congestive heart failure, your doctor may not advise those medicines.

Medicated nail polish

For treatment of fingernail fungus, medicated nail polish is available. Such an antifungal nail polish is known as ciclopirox (Penlac). You paint your infected nails and the surrounding area with this medicated polish. Do this once a day. Keep it for seven days, and after that remove the piled on layers using alcohol. Then use it again. You may need to use this nail polish daily for about a year to get rid of the infraction.

Medicated nail cream

There are antifungal medicated nail creams available which will help you to get rid of fingernail fungus infection. You soak your nails and then use the cream on your infected nails. To increase the effectiveness of such medicated creams, you can thin your nails.

Surgical procedures

Nail removal

In case of severe nail infection, or if it is extremely painful for you, your doctor may surgically remove the nail. A new nail generally grows to replace the removed one. It may take some time, for your nail to grow back completely. Surgery and ciclopirox may also be combined with such treatments.

Laser and light-based therapies

When these methods are combined with other medicines, they will help your nails to improve. Carbon dioxide laser therapy and antifungal nail creams are combined in such therapies. These therapies may be expensive and are not easily available everywhere.

Athletic muscle

Know your genetics

Knowing the genetic make-up of your body type is important because it will impact your intentions.

Bone length factors-torso, lower leg, upper leg and arms

Width/girth factors-the width of your hips and shoulder girdle, rib cage protrusion, girth of your hips, lower torso or abdominals and upper torso or chest in combination to your existing muscle mass.

Muscle size, origin and insertion factors-long or short muscle bellies, and the point where they attach to your skeleton.

Whether you are tall and skinny, wide at the lower torso and narrow at the shoulders, long femur or short torso will decide whether you will be able to achieve some of the specific goals about your physique. You will need to adjust your goals according to your body type. It is possible to alter your body composition or muscle to fat ratio, but that can be done within the limits of genetical factors.

Focus on the nutrition

Nutrition is very important in achieving your goal physique. You need to ensure a good balance of the macronutrients, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats consumption. Whey or casein protein, high glycemic or low glycemic carbs, saturated or polyunsaturated or unsaturated fat; all these can impact your training goals.

While exercising, do not avoid the last few difficult repetitions because they may help you by becoming the effective overload stimulus. You should also run and work harder. Adjusting the intensity variables such as adding volume, increasing effort, lowering the rest time will continuously make your training more demanding and will get you more benefit from the exercise you are engaged in.

Plan for your goal

You will need to have a plan for your goals. If you want to get stronger, you will need a different plan for that. It cannot aimlessly workout each and every day. You need to ask yourself why you are training constantly, while you are trying so hard, whether you are eating and sleeping properly, if you are documenting your efforts and other questions which will help you to focus on what you want to achieve and accordingly decide what you need to do to achieve that.

It is better to keep it simple. If you want to reduce body fat, you will need to lower calorie intake and perform those exercises that reduce the body fat you have. If you want to get stronger, unique to focus on exercises which help your entire body. The plan will help you to get results you want.

Elbow

The elbow is the middle portion of the arm where three long bones meet together. It’s a joint. Humerus or the bone of the upper arm, ulna or the inner bone of the forearm and radius or the outer bone of the forearm meets at the elbow as a hinge joint.

The elbow is necessary for rotation of the forearm. It helps the arm to move like a hinge- forward and backward. You can twist your arm outward and inward because of the presence of the elbow. The elbow hinge is flexed with the help of the biceps muscle. Extending the elbow hinge is possible with the help of the triceps muscle.

The inner side of the elbow is known as the medial epicondyle. It’s a bony prominence. Extra tendons from the muscles get attached to this portion. These tendons may be injured, which will cause the golfer’s elbow or medial epicondylitis. There is a fluid filled sac known as bursa present on the tip of the elbow. The main function of this sac is to reduce friction. Inflammation of the tendons or the bursae may happen, causing different types of medical conditions.

What conditions can cause elbow injury and elbow pain?

There are different causes of elbow pain. In the case of exercise enthusiasts, athletes and hard gainers, most of the elbow pain happen due to overuse injuries. Repetitive hand, wrist or arm movements can cause such injuries. Arthritis may also cause elbow pain but in general, wear and tear damage cannot create problems for the elbow like other joints.

The most common causes of elbow pain are-

  • Broken arm
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Throwing injuries
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome, which occurs when the ulnar nerve on the inside of your elbow is irritated or injured
  • Bursitis
  • Dislocated elbow
  • Elbow fracture
  • Ligament sprains and tears
  • Little league elbow syndrome (pitcher’s elbow). This is an injury seen in the case of children and rapidly growing adolescents. It is generally associated with throwing sports such as baseball
  • Olecranon bursitis, which means inflammation of a small sac of fluid present on the tip of the elbow
  • Stress fractures
  • Tennis elbow
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Dislocation
  • Osteochondritis dissecans
  • Radial tunnel syndrome. It’s a problem of the radial nerve, which is compressed just beyond the elbow
  • Sprains and strains
  • Tendinitis
  • Trapped nerves

If you’re having any deformity in your elbow or a protruding bone is present in the elbow, you should immediately seek emergency care. You should consult your doctor if you are in severe pain, there are bruising and swelling around the joint, you are having trouble in moving your elbow normally, not finding it difficult to turn your arm or use your arm.

You should visit your doctor if you are suffering from elbow pain that has an improved even after several days of home treatment, you’re having pain, even when you don’t use the arm or you see a swelling or pain or increasing redness of the area.

Self-care

Self-care for elbow pain includes rest, use of ice, compression and elevation. You should rest your injured hand. You can an ice pack on the area affected. Keep the ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day. You can also use a compression bandage to reduce the swelling if any.

When you lose fat and become fit, you not only look better, but you also have a better health and less possibility of having different medical conditions. Losing fat and becoming fit is not hard if you follow certain specific rules and play by them. There are a few rules which can help you to lose fat and become fit.

Burn more calories than you eat

Fat loss is simple-burn more calories than you eat and you will reduce fat and weight. You should not engage in guesswork and so need a food Journal for every week. Exactly count how many calories you are eating and you’ll be surprised by this continuous tracking. You need to eat 500 fewer calories per day from your existing calorie intake. Do not cut out meals, but reduce the calories in it. You can reduce the portion sizes or reduce your carbs. Get rid of the junk or processed food.

Eat more protein

Eating more protein will help you in getting rid of the extra fat in your body and will also help you to build muscles. The high protein foods are the most important when you are trying to lose fat. These foods also boost your calorie burn as digestion of the proteins needs more energy in comparison to carbs or fat. A high-protein diet will also help you by preventing muscle loss when you reduce your calorie intake. You need to eat 1 gm of protein per pound of your body weight. Good protein sources are lean meats, fish, eggs and protein powders.

Eat more healthy fats

Fats are not villains as they are portrayed. Eating some fat does not mean that you are adding it to your waistline. Real butter, animal fats, nuts, coconut oil and avocados are good for you because they reduce hunger and also help you by maintaining optimal testosterone production. If you do not eat enough fats, you will have different problems and you won’t be able to lose bad fats.

You need to reduce the amount of carbs and eat more healthy fats. If you eat more carbs, it will increase the blood sugar and your insulin levels, which will cause more fat storage. You need at least 25% of your calories from good fat sources. However, you need to avoid artificial trans fats because they can cause different medical conditions.

Get stronger

You need to get stronger and for that, you need strength training. Strength training will also increase the muscle mass and will keep you fit and healthy. Cardio is good for you as it helps you to burn some calories, but cardio cannot help you to develop your muscles. Lots of cardio combined with fewer intakes of calories can negatively affect you and you may lose muscles. It may also make you weaker. You should lift heavy and build your strength will stop when you lift heavy, it will help you to add muscle mass and will also improve the body composition.

Sleep

You need to sleep a lot. Sleep at least seven hours a night. If you cut back on your sleep, it increases the levels of cortisol-the stress hormone. Cortisol causes fat storage in the body. Scientists associate shorter amounts of sleep with higher BMI and larger waistline. Sleep deprivation is bad for you because it hampers recovery and growth hormone production. You need seven hours of uninterrupted sleep. Take some measures to avoid any interruption in your sleep.

There are three stages associated with shingles. If you know the symptoms for each of these stages, it will be easier to diagnose them and offer treatment as and when necessary.

Stage 1-before the rash
The symptoms at this stage include itchiness, numbness, tingling, and pain in specific parts of your body. These are the areas where the rash will eventually develop. Diarrhea, chills and stomach ache are often seen in the patients during this stage. Swelling or tendering of the lymph nodes is also seen.

Stage 2-rash and blisters
On one side of the body, rash will develop. Blisters will form eventually. At the initial stage, the liquid in the blisters is clear but it will turn cloudy later. Such a rash and blisters may also cause stinging pain in the patients. If somehow a rash develops around your eyes, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Stage 3- after the rash and blisters
You may experience pain where the rash developed. It is known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The condition may last for weeks or years. You’ll experience extreme sensitivity, chronic pain, aches and burning sensation during this time.

You may be at a higher risk of having shingles if you are using immunosuppressive drugs like steroids which are generally prescribed after an organ transplant. If you are suffering from any of the following conditions, you have a higher risk of having shingles-

·         Cancer

·         Lymphoma

·         Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

·         Leukemia

Treatment of shingles

Facelift

If facelift surgery helps in making the face look younger. The results of such a surgery last about 10 years. The recovery time is one or two weeks. There will be some pain and discomfort after the procedure.

With age, the face loses skin elasticity and as a result loses skin start to show. There will be loss of fat and muscle tone with age. Besides facelift surgery, you may also need additional procedures such as a neck lift, liposuction, eyelid surgery, autologous fat injection, removal of cheek fat pad, forehead lift; chemical laser peel, malar and sub malar chin implants etc.

How is the facelift surgery performed?

A traditional facelift surgery is done by an incision that starts in the hair or hairline above or in front of the ear. Hence behind the ear neared the hair or hairline. The fatty tissues in the skin are lifted off the muscles and connective tissues as far as necessary for correction of the loose skin problem. If necessary, sutures are used to tighten the underlying muscle and fascia or the connective tissue. The excess skin is removed and the skin is pulled back and upward. The wound resulting from the surgery is close using sutures and staples. Sometimes, keeping a drain is necessary in the wounds to eliminate the excess blood.

Complications in facelift surgery

There are some risks involved in the facelift surgery. The risks include

  • Bleeding, hematoma, bruising
  • Infection
  • Neurological dysfunction (loss of muscle function or sensation), which is usually temporary
  • Widened or thickened scar
  • Loss of hair (around the incision site)
  • Asymmetry (unevenness between two sides)
  • Skin necrosis (loss of skin from tissue death)

Maybe people take this risk and go for facelift surgery because the benefits they perceive from facelift surgery are much more in comparison to the possible medical problems.

Cost

The cost of facelift surgeries can vary a lot depending on the doctor and the location. In an average the facelift cost is $ 6000. However, it may start from $ 3000 and run up to $ 15,000. This course does not include the preparation phase, where you need to undergo different tests and pay for medicines and other procedures. You need to include the costs of anesthesia, prescription, preparatory tests etc into the total cost. Some factors that will decide the total costs are the type of facelift, the type of anesthesia, techniques, the skill and reputation of the surgeon, additional treatments and location.

E-cigarettes

E-cigarettes

A very recent US National study found that the use of e-cigarettes among the teens surpassed use of topical cigarettes. More and more teams are using e-cigarettes compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes.

 The study

The University of Michigan conducted a Monitoring the Future study. In the study, they tracked trends in use of substances in the students in 8th, 10th and 12th grades. The National study is in its 40th year. Every year, the National study conducts surveys of 40,000 to 50,000 students in 400 secondary schools in the United States.

The survey asked questions like whether the student in question used and e-cigarette or a traditional cigarette in the last 30 days.

E-cigarettes

E-cigarettes are the newest smoking type product. It is finding popularity with the American adolescents. These are battery-powered devices that use a heating element. These cigarettes produce an aerosol or vapor that the user inhales. In general, the vapor contains nicotine. It’s a proprietary content is present in the e-cigarettes and it is not regulated. The fact that the liquid vaporized in e-cigarettes are available in different flavors, including bubblegum and milk chocolate cream, may have added to the popularity among younger teens.

The results

It is found that twice as many 8th and 10th graders were using e-cigarettes. 16% of the 10th graders were using e-cigarettes and 7% were using tobacco cigarettes. About 9% of the 8th grade students were using e-cigarettes, while only 4% were using at tobacco cigarette in the last 30 days. In the 12th graders, 17% of the students were using e-cigarettes and 14% used a tobacco cigarette in the last 30 days.

It is also noteworthy that older teens reported marginal difference in between e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes. However, according to the principal investigator of the project, this may be because of the fact that e-cigarettes are relatively new. Therefore, the 12th graders might not have had the opportunity to use them when they were younger. A further study in a future time will be able to decide whether that’s true or not.

The possible risk

E-cigarettes may work as a point of entry for the users into the use of nicotine. About 4% to 7% students in 8th, 10th and 12th grades, who used e-cigarettes, never smoked at tobacco cigarette in their life. E-cigarettes work as a primary source of nicotine but not as a supplement to tobacco cigarette. However, it is not yet certain if the youth using e-cigarettes later become tobacco cigarette smokers or not. This is a crucial and big concern to the public health community.

At present use of tobacco cigarettes is at a historic low when you look at the life of the study. In 2014, tobacco cigarette smokers in the past 30 days, was 8% for 8th, 10th and 12th grade students combined. This is a significant decline from 2013, when it was 10%. In 1998, the percentage of tobacco cigarette smokers was 28% in the same grades. Such a decline in tobacco cigarette smoking among the young students was possible due to decline in the number of young students who have started smoking tobacco cigarettes. In 2014, only 23% of the total students under the study reported trying tobacco cigarettes. In 1998 about 56% of the students surveyed reported trying tobacco cigarettes at some point or other. This is a hard won decline in the number of cigarette smokers among young people. E-cigarettes may reverse the trend by leading e-cigarette smokers to become tobacco cigarette smokers and thereby completely change the trend, which may be a big problem for the society.

Smoking and Drinking

What’s it

In a recent study, researchers have found that if you’re trying to quit drinking, it may be very difficult for you if you are a smoker. Yale University researchers are working on the study, which showed the relation between smoking and drinking. They found that if you were smoking cigarettes during recovery when you are trying to quit drinking, may become more difficult for you.

People who are drinking and smoking are at greater risk of different health problems which include different types of cancer. Heavy drinkers and smokers are at a far greater risk than people who smoke or drink less. People who want to quit drinking, but are already addicted to smoking, are more likely to relapse. These medical problems may lead to other severe problems later.

The study

The study was done on both human and monkeys. The results were mentioned in a paper published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The researchers hired 27 male and female alcoholics and 25 people without alcohol problems. Both were separated into different groups. Their brains were scanned while they were undergoing treatment. The scientist wanted to find out the level of GABA A in the two groups.

Smoking and drinking

Many alcoholics also smoke cigarettes. It seems these two problems go hand-in-hand. Many people who have tried to give up drinking claim that if you are smoking while you’re trying to quit drinking, the quitting part becomes easier. People are probably fooling themselves and others, if we are to believe the results of the study recently done.

Previous research found that a neurotransmitter known as Gamma-amoinobutyric acid A or GABA A is involved in both smoking and drinking. The new study has discovered that the same neurotransmitter also has a role to play in case of people were trying to quit drinking but are continuing to smoke.

The results

From the data collected from analysis of the two groups, researchers found a clear link between availability of GABA A receptors in the case of people who drank and smoked. It meant that people who were trying to quit drinking, but continues working had more GABA A receptor activity in them than compared to the non-smokers. They also discovered that people, who smoked during their recovery period, also had double the cravings for alcohol. As a result, quitting drinking became more difficult.

They also conducted another interesting separate study using monkeys. They found that the nicotine present in the cigarettes was not the chemical that made it more difficult to quit drinking-it was something else. The researchers have to identify that chemical since cigarette smoke contains several different chemicals in it.

What it means

It means that people who are trying to quit alcohol will be most successful if they also quit smoking cigarettes. However, this is accepted that quitting smoking is harder than quitting any other type of addiction. Understanding the effect of smoking on GABA A receptors on people who are trying to quit alcohol will offer crucial insights for doctors who are trying to treat patients with the treatment of combine alcohol and nicotine dependence. This can be a very good news for people who are trying to quit smoking and drinking. It will be enlightening for people, doctors, parents and family members who were trying to or helping others to quit drinking as because it will mean a better understanding of the processes to be taken and avoiding smoking in the process. If you are trying to stop drinking, think about the benefits you’ll receive by stopping smoking.

It has found to be helpful in different medical conditions such as cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and HIV.

Scientific studies

Recently, researchers have found extraordinary effects of meditation on the human brain. Brain imaging techniques have revealed how meditation can profoundly change the activities in your brain and help you to live a healthy and better life.

No fear

MRI scans done on individuals, who underwent eight weeks of meditation practice, found that the “fight or flight” centre of the brain, the amygdala showed signs of shrinking. It is the part of the brain, which is associated with emotion and fear. It is responsible for your body’s response to stress.

When the amygdala shrinks, the prefrontal cortex becomes thicker. This is the part of the brain that is associated with higher brain functions including awareness, decision-making and concentration.

Changes in the brain

It was found that the functional connectivity between different regions of the brain also changes with meditation. The connection between the amygdala and other parts of your brain becomes weaker. At the same time, the connections between areas controlling attention and concentration become stronger.

Number of hours

The changes that happen in your brain are directly co-related to the number of hours of meditation practice you perform. With mindfulness meditation, one type of meditation, you can increase your ability to use your prefrontal cortex region responsible for higher order activities regulate the lower order activities of the brain. It means you’ll be able to offer more thoughtful responses to stress rather than offering primal responses.

Activities that boost the prefrontal cortex

There are several activities that you can take up to increase the size of your prefrontal cortex. Video games can help you to do that. However, the maximum benefit can be achieved from the disconnection of your mind from its “stress center.” If you can do that, you’ll be able to get physical and mental health benefits.

Scientists have found that meditation can help you to reduce the bio markers of stress and inflammation, which include C-reactive proteins, interleukin 6 and cortisol. All of these are associated with different diseases. So with meditation you can reduce the bio markers and thereby help your body to prevent any possible diseases.

Feel reduced pain

Meditators often feel less pain than non-meditators. It was found in scientific studies. It is probably possible because meditation practitioners can remove or reduce the effects of the adverse stimulation. Thereby, they can reduce the stressing nature of it. They do that by changing the connectivity between two regions of the brain. They do not engage in the thought process that makes it more painful when something happens to your body.
