Care your Baby

For first time parents, it is normal to become apprehensive whether they are fit in caring for their baby. Even as early prior to getting pregnant, a woman is already dreaming of having the opportunity to carry her dream child inside her womb and to raise it properly. Now that you are closer in making your dream a reality, it is essential to learn some important baby care tips in order to help you care for your child properly and learn how to overcome the challenge of entering the world of parenthood.

For breastfeeding mothers

Doctors always recommend breastfeeding babies in the first 6 months. A mother's milk helps in strengthening the baby's immune system and breastfeeding seems to be a more responsible option that a mother can choose when raising her child. Should you opt to breastfeed, you will need to be emotionally and physically prepared. Nursing mothers tend to experience post partum depression and breastfeeding often adds up to the problem. It is important to ask for the help of a pediatrician and schedule a visit regularly for lactation support. You can also join a nursing support group which is helpful in bonding with your child and with other nursing mothers.

It is also important to prepare at home some tools that will make breastfeeding easier for you. There are nursing pumps that you can use as an alternative means of extracting the milk which is helpful especially when you have a sore nipple. You will also need a garment that will support your breast. Using a warm compress will help improve the milk flow, making it for your baby to easily extract them out. You may also opt to introduce your baby in using a feeding bottle at 8 weeks at least 1 bottle a day.

Ask yourself whether you want to pursue a cardio exercise or you want to burn out some calories. Whatever your goals are, it is important to start it lightly as a beginner. There are ways to intensify your running exercise like running uphill and doing other more challenging forms of a running regimen but always respect that your body's ability to cope with an intense running exercise does not happen instantly. Take it slow at first and gradually move forward in pursuing to accomplish your fitness goals.

Choose the ideal form of a running exercise for a beginner

You can take different approaches on how to start running as a beginner. Fitness experts always recommend integrating aerobic exercise like walking before you fully engage in a more vigorous running activity. This will slowly help the body to adjust to the level of intensity of activities it is doing instead of introducing to it a sudden burst of running activity. Ideally, beginners should start running initially at least twice to thrice a week to condition the body. As your body adapts to the activity, you will find yourself running more consistently and at a longer pace. You can then intensify the level of running by doing the more challenging activities like running uphill.

Starting it right and ending it right

Running injuries are very common among beginners who do not understand how to start the exercise right. Stretching plays an integral role in preventing the muscles from getting sore and painful after the exercise. You should start with a warm up exercise prior to the actual running activity to make your muscles, joints and ligaments ready for the activity. Begin by doing gentle stretching of the legs and arms, shoulders and neck. You can walk slowly for at least 5 minutes then progress to walk more quickly and increase the pace by jogging until you are off running at a speed that is comfortable to you. A good running technique is to run with a relaxed arms and shoulders while the elbows are bent. Make sure to keep a smooth running stride with the middle of the feet hitting the ground.

While your start running with a warm up period, you should end it with a cool down period. Do not abruptly stop from running but instead slow down your pace by walking for 5 minutes before completely resting. This will help prevent the possible running injuries from taking place on your muscles, ligaments and joint structures.

Keeping up the pace

Becoming consistent with this exercise regimen is sometimes difficult to some. This is because they have lost the motivation of pursuing their goals and appreciating their progress. As a beginner, you should have a plan on how to avoid this kind of challenge and to become consistent in keeping up the pace of your exercise progress and stay committed of reaching your fitness goals.

  • Record your progress

Keeping track of your progress by the record is a good way of appreciating your efforts and your progress that will help you stay motivated. Note the distance, your weight, route, time and the weather condition to see where the exercise is taking you and to reminisce those moments where you enjoyed the sceneries where you spent running. The exercise diary will show you that the running distance is progressing and that your weight is improving.

  • Run with someone

Running alone can be lonely indeed. You can avoid this kind of feeling by asking some friends to run with you or to run on parks where there are also other people keeping themselves fit and make friends with them. They can help motivate you and encourage you to attain your fitness goals.

Some Exercise for vision improve

Having an impaired vision can be a serious problem however due to aging a declining vision is a normal part of the aging process. There are different causes why our vision is impaired aside from aging. Visual impairment may be caused by an eye injury, infection, eye diseases like cataract and amblyopia and it may also be caused by medical conditions like diabetes mellitus. You need professional help in order to accurately diagnose the underlying cause for an impaired vision. It is important to note however that there are also other causes for impaired eyesight other than pathological causes. Eye strain for example is one cause for making one feel that their vision is blurry. Keeping the eyes healthy is important because we use the organ in performing about 98% of our daily activities except when sleeping and these tips will help you improve your vision better.

Do These Eye Exercises

There are natural ways to improve our vision and an eye exercise is one of them. This involves simple activities that can keep the eyes more visually focused and healthy.

  • Sit properly and stretch one arm with the fist closed and the thumb pointing upward. Focus your vision on the thumb and start moving the thumb closer to the eye while maintaining visual contact on it. Do not lose focus. Then move back with an arm's length position while the eye is still focused on the thumb. Do this exercise for at least 5 minutes.
  • Focus the eyes on your thumb on a closed fist with the thumb pointing upward for 2 minutes. Then slowly move your eyes away to look for any object in your surroundings that is more than 3 meters away from you. Then start to refocus your vision back on the thumb again. Repeat the same cycle for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Rub your hands until they are warm and then place your hands on a cupped position to cover both eyes with the fingers resting on the forehead. Keep the eyes open and look steadily on the darkness inside the cupped hand. Make sure to keep the fingers together to ensure no light will pass through. Feel the warmth of the hands too. This is an effective palming exercise that helps to improve the vision when the eyes are tired resulting in a blurred vision.
  • Eyeball rolling exercise will help improve the blood flow in the eyes. Roll your eyeballs rhythmically clockwise and then counter-clockwise and this will increase the oxygen supply to the eyes and loosens the ocular eye muscles thereby helping to improve your vision.
  • Move the eyes to the side just like the hand of a clock moving from 12 to 6 o'clock. Do this 20 times. Then move the eyes from 3 to 9 o'clock position and do it 20 times. Once done, close the eyes and rest for a few seconds. You can do this eye activity twice a day.

Yoga Exercise

Yoga Exercise

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuromuscular condition caused by the demyelination of the axons and the myelin sheath of the central nervous system. MS affects both the brain and the spinal cord which specifically slows down or blocks the messages from the brain to the body. Treatment of MS consists of immunomodulary therapy for the underlying disorder and symptom management. Aside from the typical nonpharmacologic treatment that are introduced to MS patients such as physical and occupational therapy, complementary and alternative medicine as management option is also getting famous.

Among the widely used complementary and alternative management (CAM) approaches that are used in managing MS patients are meditation and yoga. Health survey shows that 12% to 31% of these persons have been practicing yoga exercises and 60% to 80% of them claimed that it had been helpful. Although there has been a number of CAM approaches related to the management of multiple sclerosis, interest has been high for meditation and yoga. The benefits of yoga are believed to be related to the lower risk of physical and emotional stress thus it is considered as a practical therapeutic approach. Yoga exercise also allows MS patients to engage in their treatment in very active and engaged manner. Yoga and other mind-body approaches also offer relatively low-cost options as compared to other established treatment for multiple sclerosis. It is important to note though that currently there has still no direct evidence and particular process as to how yoga benefits MS patients.

Research study in yoga and MS

A new pilot study suggests that a yoga program designed specifically for patients with multiple sclerosis shows benefit in improvement on walking ability, balance, fatigue, and health status. This might also even help control the inflammation and pain suffered by MS patients. According to Evan T. Cohen, PhD, the lead study author and a physical therapist and associate professor at Rutgers School of Health Related Professions, the results add weight to the importance of physical activity and that neurologists should be recommending exercise and physical activity to their MS patients. Dr. Cohen however pointed out that the study he conducted was exploratory and this study was not to say definitively that yoga is more effective than the other modes of physical activity.

Proven MS Treatment By Dr Gary Levin – Click Here!

The study involved 15 women who had been living with MS for about 14 years who participated in the yoga program developed by a panel of experts. The program was particularly made for MS patients and includes elements for breathing, medication, yoga philosophy, relaxation and yoga posture. The yoga program was 2 90-minute sessions per week for 8 weeks. The researchers also took blood samples but the results of the analysis of the impact of yoga on various parameters are not present in the study as they are still analyzing it.

What the research indicates

yogaAccording to the researchers, yoga has caused improvements on balance and posture among multiple sclerosis patients. It was further noted that an element of camaraderie and purpose may be involved thus improving the MS affected person's quality of life. The researchers believed that the meditation element of yoga may have contributed to the improvement of quality of life of the subjects and that mindfulness and meditation have a physiologic effect.

There might be plenty of anecdotal evidence of yoga's benefits; there has been a little objective evidence for such claim. Studies conducted involving yoga and other mind-body therapies in the treatment of multiple sclerosis were exploratory. Despite of the potential benefits that are supported by such studies, there are still no conclusive evidences for the claimed physical benefits.  It is also necessary to emphasize that despite the hypothesized and claimed benefits of yoga exercise, there is still no evidence that it indeed affects the underlying multiple sclerosis disease process thus established treatment such as medications should be continued.

Heart DiseaseA heart disease can lead to a serious and life threatening condition such as a sudden heart attack. The consequence can be devastating and it may lead to death. A person with a heart disease should become aware of the potential dangers of having the disease and proper management and care for the condition is needed to prevent the potential complications that go with the risk of having a heart problem. The treatment and care for a person with a heart disease involves not only the health care providers but the patient as well. If you have the condition it is crucial to understand how to manage yourself because you are likely to live with the condition throughout your lifetime.

The heart is a vital organ that is responsible in distributing oxygen throughout the body through the circulation. A diseased heart condition affects how the body receives the oxygen and the blood supply it needs to become efficiently functional. Proper treatment and management of heart disease requires medical intervention consisting of proper medication, exercise, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Management of Heart Disease

Heart disease may involve different types of heart disorders. In every type of the disorder the heart becomes weak and frail and a heart attack may occur anytime. Prevention is more effective than providing the heart disease a cure. However, in the presence of a heart disease it is important to prevent the occurrence of complications like a heart attack and stroke and this makes proper management of a heart disease very important to the patient and his family members.

1.      Lifestyle Changes and Prevention

Lifestyle changes can significantly affect how a person is able to cope with a heart disease. Smoking, unhealthy food choices, stressful activities and alcohol intake contribute to the risks of getting the condition. Without these unhealthy lifestyles you can protect yourself against the potential risks of complications that may occur in the presence of a heart disorder. Make sure to visit your doctor regularly in order to closely monitor your response to your treatment and to manage your health in general.

2.      Get moderate exercise

Persons with heart disease need to get an adequate exercise but this step must be taken cautiously. Medications like Beta Blockers and Diuretics are commonly prescribed for blood pressure maintenance while aspirin, fibrins and statins prevent the occurrence of blood thinning. Fluids may congest the heart and doctors usually prescribe Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors as preventive medicine. Whatever medication your doctor prescribes it is important to take it regularly as prescribed by your doctor.

4.      Medical procedures for heart disease management

heart disease

Coronary angioplasty for heart treatment

In more serious cases heart disease patients will require to undergo through a medical procedure like surgery such as coronary angioplasty. Invasive procedures are usually necessary in order to relieve the congestion in the heart and in some cases the heart needs to be replaced through the surgical procedure called a heart transplant. People with a severe heart condition usually need implantable cardioverter defibrillators and pacemakers in order to keep the heart working and to prevent a heart failure. Cardiologists are now using advanced technology in order to make the life of people with a heart disease better.

Kidney-stoneKidney stones are hard crystal formation consisting of calcium mineral. It is otherwise called as renal calculus while some doctors refer to it as nephrolithiasis. The crystalline minerals are usually formed because of the buildup of dietary minerals coming from the urine. In small sizes kidney stones are negligible however when it grows in size or drains down from the kidney to the bladder, obstruction occurs and symptoms begin to surface such as painful urination.

Types of kidney stones

There are different types of kidney stones and they are named according to their location within the urinary tract. Stone formations located in the kidney are called nephrolith, those in the ureter are called as ureterolith and urolith when it is located anywhere within the urinary tract.

1.    Calcium oxalate stone

The most common type is the calcium oxalate stone. The stone is composed of calcium compound which at a higher level in the body may result in the development of the condition called hyperparathyroidism.

2.    Uric acid stone

The urine usually carries with it a waste product called the uric acid which when they build in large amounts in the kidney will result to the formation of kidney stones. The high level of uric acid is present in the urine owing to the consumption of high levels of proteins usually found in red meat. The uric acid level also easily form into stone when the person has a low urine output. People with gout and inflammatory bowel diseases are also prone to developing a high level of uric acid that can be a potential risk of developing a kidney stone.

3.    Cystine stone formation

One rare kidney stone formation is from the chemical cystine which is usually common only as a hereditary risk. The cystine stone formation is highly preventable with medicine. When left untreated however, the stone can grow bigger in size and can cause significant blockage in the urinary system that will make surgical treatment necessary.

4.    Struvite kidney stone

This stone formation may be accompanied with an infection to the urinary tract system and when they grow large in size it can become a serious condition that can cause kidney obstruction. The stone is responsive to antibiotic treatment but may require for its removal by surgery when they grow dangerously large enough.

kidney-stoneSources of kidney stone formation

A dehydrated body results in a low-level of urine volume and higher concentration level of the urine that can induce the formation of kidney stones. High quantities of calcium and uric acid can lead to the crystalline stone formation can result in the blockage of the urinary system. About 70% of kidney stones are due to the combination of calcium and oxate crystals. Other compounds that can induce the kidney stone formation are amino acid cysteine and magnesium ammonium phosphate.

Infections such as a UTI can also increase the levels of struvite stone formation in the kidney. Other medical conditions can also trigger the development of kidney stones in the body such as hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, cystinuria, inflammatory bowel disease, hypertension and diabetes. Dietary factors can also contribute to the risk of developing a kidney stone. Animal protein intake and excessive consumption of sugar are also regarded as risk factors. The higher level of salt in your diet may also cause stone formation in the kidney as well as the over supplementation of Vitamin D. Oxalate level in spinach is also high and people who consume spinach at high levels in their diet are also prone to developing kidney stones.

Diagnosing kidney stones

Kidney stones are difficult to diagnose without undergoing a laboratory test and procedure like a CT scan. Small stone formation in the kidney can become asymptomatic and only cause disturbing symptoms when they grow large enough as to significantly obstruct the urinary system. The initial symptoms that can signify the presence of a kidney stone include painful urination (dysuria), nausea, fever, bloody urine and pus present in the urine which is indicative of an infection. Some may also feel an urgency to urinate. Among the prescribed procedures for diagnosing kidney stones are lithotripsy, surgery, blood tests, physical examination and radiography.

Treatment for kidney stones

The symptom of pain, nausea and vomiting are usually managed by taking medications to make the person feel comfortable. Small stones usually resolve on its own especially when it is passed out in the urine. Large kidney stones however require special forms of treatment that include ureteroscopy, open surgery, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The choice of procedure will usually depend upon the location and size of the stone formed.

Cleansing food to take

There are certain food groups that are known to provide some relief and preventive value against kidney stones. These are radish, watermelon, parsley basil leaves, celery and fennel rose hip. Drinking a glass of apple or tomato juice once a day may be helpful. Increase your fluid intake in order to help the kidney effectively flush out the crystalline stones through the urine.

Foods to avoid

Soybeans contain high level of oxalates and eating them too much in your diet may increase the risk to kidney stone formation. The oxalate binds with the calcium in the kidney and when combined together they form kidney stones. Fermented soy based foods however are safer because the fermenting process helps to reduce the amount of oxalates. Sugar can also be a risk for kidney stone formation because it can interfere with the absorption of calcium and magnesium in the body. Excessive sugar level can also increase the size of the kidney and may cause different pathologies.

Don’t wait to get more complication for your kidney stone. Make sure to have a regular check up to prevent the progression of your kidney stone diseases.

Women battle their own health issues

Women empowerment has made women lead a very active lifestyle. From juggling career, family and personal responsibilities, a woman can become prone to chronic diseases and illnesses. In a stressful environment it is easy for women to suffer from exposure to free radicals and pollution that can make them susceptible from contracting different diseases and these five health concerns are the most common among women.

1.       Breast Cancer

Breast cancer in women ranks second to cancer in the lungs that provides for the leading mortality rate for cancer in women. The prevalence of breast cancer in women is attributed to hereditary causes. The physicians from the American Cancer Society recommend among women to observe an active lifestyle, get regular exercise, decrease weight and stop smoking in order to reduce their risk to breast cancer. Getting a regular check up with your doctor will also help you maintain a good healthy condition and it will help detect the condition at its early stage. Regular screening among women for breast cancer is a good preventive measure against leaving the disease undetected that makes treatment more difficult. Early intervention can give women a better chance to survive a breast cancer.

2.       Heart Disease

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that the heart disease provides the highest mortality rate among all diseases in both men and women. Heart disease in women is often left undiagnosed which makes it more difficult to treat the condition. By the time the condition is detected, it is already at a more serious stage that intervention becomes more difficult. According to Saralyn Mark of the US Department of Health and Human Services, the heart disease in women can become asymptomatic and may only manifest as a mild chest pain and considered negligible. Women often mistakes this tell-tale sign of a heart disease as a symptom of stress and usually takes it lightly. Women often experience the symptoms of shoulder pain, pain in the jaw and shortness of breath. The earlier the heart disease is diagnosed, the better the treatment outcome becomes. However, owing to an active and stressful lifestyles that a woman can have, the symptoms of heart disease is often taken lightly as a mere natural sign of every day stress.

3.       Autoimmune disease

Autoimmune diseases occur in about 75% of women. This is reported by the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association. Diseases of the immune system consist of a group of disorders where the body's own immune system attacks the body especially the normal cellular tissues. The most common forms of autoimmune disease seen in women are diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease. Once an autoimmune disease is present, women can dramatically experience a decline in their ability to become active. Diseases involving the autoimmune system can become disabling and can take a toll on a woman's lifestyle and every day activities.

4.       Osteoporisis

About 68% of women will have an osteoporosis throughout their lifetime according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. The condition involves a weakened bone and typically occurs in women in their 40's. Regular exercise and a balanced diet can help prevent osteoporosis from occurring. Older women are more susceptible from osteoporosis because of their frailty and age. In the presence of osteoporosis women are likewise susceptible to bone fractures.

5.       Depression

The National Institute of Mental Health cited that women are more susceptible to depression than men. About 12 million of women have been suffering from major depression and hormonal changes are viewed to be the triggers for depression in women. This is most significant especially during the approaching years for menopausal or pre-menopausal stages. Because women have more inclination to connect with others, they tend to feel frustrated easily with rejection and as a result depression sets in. Depression can also be triggered by existing medical conditions like heart disease, substance abuse, marital problems and other chronic illnesses.

Keep in mind that every day stress is a major risk factor to various illnesses that are common to women. Live a healthy lifestyle and keep stress away by eating healthy diet and regular  exercise now.

A Urinary Tract Infection

The urinary tract is the system in the body where urine formation occurs. When the system gets infected a urinary tract infection or UTI occurs. The infection commonly affects the urinary bladder and when the condition does not receive an immediate medical attention, more serious complications can

potentially occur. An unattended urinary infection may lead to the gradual spread of the infection to the other organs in the body, making a simple urinary tract infection a more complicated condition.

An overview about the urinary system

The urinary system in the body is composed of four vital organs consisting of the bladder, kidney, urethra and the ureters. The part of the urinary system that performs the most crucial role in the urination process is the kidney. The kidneys are two organs that are located right at the middle back portion of the body just below the ribs. Its vital function is to remove the excess liquids from the body and to eliminate wastes and toxins from the blood.

Just below the lower abdomen are the ureters consisting of long narrow tubes that connect the urinary bladder to the kidney. The bladder holds the urine and once the maximum amount of urine it can retain is reached, the bladder empties the volume of urine it holds through the urethra. These vital components of the urinary system can become infected such as when harmful organisms invade them, causing to a person to experience significant discomfort and symptoms.

UTI is caused by bacterial infection

urinary tract infection

Common symptoms of UTI

UTI Diagnosis

A UTI is diagnosed through a laboratory test called a urinalysis. A sample of your urine will be collected in a laboratory test. The test can diagnose the presence even an asymptomatic urinary tract infection. The presence of a pus and a high level of white blood cells indicate the presence of an infection. In some cases, a urine culture may be done in order to identify the specific bacterial organism that caused the infection. If the infection is recurrent, your doctor will find the need to use a cystoscope in order to view the condition of your bladder and urethra from the inside.

UTI Treatment

Doctors always prescribe antibiotics as a first line of treatment for the bacterial infection. The type of antibiotic given usually depends upon the extent of the infection and the health condition of the patient. Amoxicillin, ampicillin, and levofloxacin are the most common antibiotics prescribed for the treatment of simple UTI. The symptoms usually subsides in just a few days of treatment. In severe UTI however the antibiotic usually needs to be intravenously administered and may require the patient to be hospitalized.
