Air mattresses are awesome. Whenever you have guests over or if you want to lie on something more comfortable than a mat during a camping trip, an air mattress can quickly provide a comfortable sleeping surface. When not in use, an air bed can be easily deflated, folded up and stored in a cabinet or the trunk of your car.

There are different kinds of air mattresses you can choose from depending on purpose, size and material. But no matter what you intend to use it for, you should consider the following qualities when looking for an air mattress to buy.

Comfort

When it comes to buying a mattress of any kind, you should first consider how comfortable it is. Of course, what may be comfortable for you may not be soft or firm enough for someone else, so when buying an air mattress it's best to see if its level of firmness can be adjusted. The newest models of air beds in the market today would often have built-in controls for firmness adjustment, while others are constructed with a memory foam layer for extra comfort.

Durability

No matter what kind of air mattress you choose, it should be durable, especially if you intend for it to be used as a permanent bed. The mattress should be made from quality materials to reduce the risk of damage. In addition, it should be able to hold air in through the night.

Convenience and ease of use

One of the top reasons why people buy an air bed is convenience since it can be easily set up and adjusted. So, choose an air mattress that can be quickly unpacked from its carrying case and can be inflated with ease using a pump.

Appropriate size

Air mattresses come in various sizes, from standard sizes such as king, queen, full and twin to special sizes to fit a truck bed, RV, or the backseat of a car. You should determine the size that you need and make sure the mattress provides enough room for comfortable sleeping.

Ease of deflation

When not in use, the air mattress should be easy to deflate, rolled up and stowed away. Some models of air beds require some manual work when deflating, which could take up time. If you've ever tried folding up a deflated air bed and putting it back in its box or storage bag, you know how much of a hassle and test of patience it can be to squeeze every last bit of air out of it. You would need to use a vacuum pump.

Portability

Folded up in its carrying case or storage bag, the air mattress should be lightweight and compact so that it's easy to carry. This is essential especially if you're planning on bringing it along on a camping trip.

Warranty

A product warranty is your protection from manufacturing defects or the use of faulty materials. When buying an air mattress, you need to make sure it's covered by at least a one-year warranty.

Value for money

The air mattress to consider should be one that offers good value for money. If a particular model has all of the qualities of a good air mattress but is still priced reasonably – or significantly less than higher-end models – then it's deemed worthy of purchase.
