After 40, your body will have a new biological rhythm. You need to understand the new biological rhythms and adjust to them. Since the activity levels after 40, tends to go down, you need to adjust what you eat and how much you eat so as to be able to burn them off. Otherwise, you will become heavier and bulkier. Look at the past and find out what worked for you and try that to reduce your weight.
Work on the underlying metabolic conditions

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is the main reason behind unsuccessful weight loss efforts of many women over 40. If you have thyroid, treating that will ensure that you are getting the results of your efforts for weight loss.
Eat for maximum energy
You probably already know that you are over 40, you cannot eat like you could at age 20. It is always better to eat more frequently, but eat less in each sitting. It will not only keep your blood sugar in control, but it will also help you to lose weight because when you’re trying to lose weight, you need to eat several meals. Also, controlling your blood sugar will not allow it to contribute to your fatigue. You can eat 5 to 6 small meals every day. You should never stay for more than 3 to 4 hours without eating. A good healthy breakfast followed by something healthier in the late morning and then a light lunch after which you can go for an afternoon snack of fruits and nuts before you end the day with a light dinner.

Get more sleep and burn more calories
You need to get more sleep to burn more calories and burning more calories means losing weight. As you age, sleep becomes more elusive. Since you are busier and more stressed, sleeping may become more and more difficult. If you have any physical issues such as snoring or a pain in the body, it may be very difficult to sleep normally and get the adequate amount of sleep.
Even though it sounds untrue, when you get a good night’s sleep, it helps you to lose weight. Recent researches done in different universities and laboratories have found that lack of sleep has a direct relationship with weight gain. When you lack sleep, balance of two hormones, leptin and ghrelin goes wrong. When you are not sleeping as much as you should, ghrelin levels go up and leptin levels go down. It causes more craving. If you are sleep deprived, you are also likely to crave energy foods which generally include more sweet or salt. It shows you how small changes in your routine or sleep can screw up your plan to lose weight and instead can result in weight gain. Your body is also metabolically most active when you sleep. If you’re sleeping less than six hours it may affect your glucose tolerance, which may ultimately result in diabetes.
