A report of a new study on breast cancer that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine have revealed that women who have atypical hyperplasia have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than previously assumed.

 

Atypical hyperplasia of the breast is actually a precancerous condition. When the breast cells were viewed under a microscope, it was seen that during that condition they were beginning to grow out of control (hyperplasia) and cluster into abnormal patterns (atypical). Statistics reveal that about 1/10th of one million breast cancer biopsies done in the United States are characterized by atypical hyperplasia.  Atypia lesions are not known to be harmful, but they do show some early features of cancer.

 

When the data from hundreds of women who had these atypical lesions were analysed it was seen that the risk of developing breast cancer in these women increases by one percent every year. After five years, 7 percent of the women developed the cancer, after 10 year the number increased to 13 percent and after about 25 years, 30 percent of the women had developed breast cancer.

 

As per this study, the women diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia fall into the high-risk category for developing breast cancer and should be intensely screened and must be prescribed medication to reduce risk.

 

Lynn Hartmann, M.D., an oncologist at Mayo Clinic and lead author of the study said that by providing better risk prediction for this group, the women’s clinical care to their individual level of risk can be tailored.

 

There have been previous studies which have reported that women with atypia are four to five times more likely to develop breast cancer than women who don’t have these lesions. But, the reason why this study is different is because this study has the patient numbers and follow-up time to report the patients the likelihood that she will develop breast cancer over a certain period of time. To ascertain the risk of developing cancer, the research team at the Mayo clinic followed up with 698 women who had the lesions and who had been diagnosed at the mayo Clinic between 1967 and 2001. A thorough analysis of their pathology and medical records was carried out to determine who developed the cancer and when. The study revealed that the researchers found that after an average follow-up of 12.5 years, 143 women had developed the disease.

 

The findings of this study were validated by researchers at Vanderbilt University who used biopsies from a separate cohort of women with atypia. Both set of data revealed similar results, about 25 to 30 percent of these women had developed breast cancer.

 

The results of this study are more relevant as it provides actual data of breast cancer cases that occurred in a population of women with atypia.  In this study, the researchers also incorporated information from the patient’s pathology specimen which gave them more accurate results. It was found that as extent of atypia in a biopsy increased, so did the woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.

 

As per the results of this study, the research team makes the recommendation that since women who have atypical hyperplasia have an increased risk of breast cancer, they should be candidates for screening MRI. The researchers also noted that since many women are not aware of the risk of developing breast cancer, they are not taking anti-estrogen medications like tamoxifen which are known to lower their risk of breast cancer by 50 percent or more. Now that there is evidence of the relation between atypical hyperplasia and breast cancer, these women must be made aware of the risk they are at by their physician.

Have you ever wondered what gives you the feeling of being full after eating big meals over the holidays? We have long known that when we eat big meals, the cells lining of our stomach and intestines releases hormones into the bloodstream that signals the brain that we are full and hence, we should stop eating. The researchers at the Duke University have now revealed that they have mapped out another system which is a cell to cell connection between the gut and the nervous system which could be a more direct signal than the release of hormones in the blood.

 

The study that was published recently in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, said that the new system could be instrumental in changing the researchers' understanding of how we sense being full and how that sensation could be affected by gastric bypass surgery. It is also hoped that this will shed light on a potential new mechanism that gives foodborne viruses' access to the brain.

 

Diego BohĂłrquez, an assistant professor of medicine at Duke and who is a part of this study as a Postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Dr. Rodger Liddle, a professor of gastroenterology said, that the study reveals that there is likely a real biology of gut feelings. When the food comes in contact with the wall of the gut, a signal is sent to the brain in real-time about what is going on in the gut.

 

In some previous research several years ago, Liddle's team had developed methods to visualize a kind of cell that is found scattered throughout the lining of the mouse gut and which is remarkably similar to a neuron. It was seen that even though the cells have a normal shape on the gut’s surface, it has a long arm on the underside. BohĂłrquez said since, the cell had an arm; it was likely that the cell had more functions than just release hormones.

 

These cells are dubbed as neuropods and their special arms are nurtured by support cells called glia that work with neurons. It leads to the assumption that these cells could be a part of a neuronal circuit. In the recent study, the researchers studied the contacts of the neuropods in greater detail. It is found that they came close to individual nerve fibers, but not blood vessels, in the small and large intestine. It was also discovered that about 60% of neuropods contacted sensory neurons, supporting the idea that they could be involved in gut sensation.

 

In order to solidify their assumption, the researchers went a step further to show that the neuropods and neurons not only contacted each other, but also they connect. In a dish, single sensory neurons isolated from the brain were kept along with a neuropods. It was seen that it reached out to contact a neuropod that was, on a cellular scale, about half a football field away. That was a significant finding said BohĂłrquez. It reveals that that these cells know how to get closer to neurons. However, the mechanism is not completely clear.

 

Neuropods, much like neurons follow the same machinery for sending and receiving signals. The researchers tried infecting the colons of mice with a disabled version of the rabies virus, which is known to move through the body by infecting neurons initially. A week after introducing the virus, it was found that only the cells with neuropods became infected.

 

Dr. Liddle said that it provided a pathway where rabies can go from the lumen of the gut to the nervous system. So, it implies that one might be able to get rabies by eating rabies. It is possible that this pathway could be used by other viruses to infect the nervous system. This study mainly concentrated on connections between neuropods and neurons closest to the intestine. The team is now working to trace the whole path from the gut to brain.

Aggression, on a funnier side may give an indication to a level that parents feel that they have failed at parenting. It's not so important why you as a parent aren't effective at times- what's more important is what you are doing to make the situation better. Some parents feel helpless at the time of the awkward situation created because of the child's unruly behavior.

While visiting a mall or a shopping complex, it is a common sight watching  children throwing tantrums or even being aggressive right in the public view trying to influence their parents on buying a toy or a game of their own choice which is termed as a forbidden fruit for them.

The parents need to understand the problem rather than imposing it on the child as his own problem and getting all aggressive about it. They fail to control their child's behavior. Some parents jump right in, as soon as they hear or see a problem and get in the child's face. This would only escalate the situation and it will teach your child that aggression is how you solve your problems. In contrast some parents are more passive but their child may become aggressive due to his parents' indifferent attitude and not dealing with issues. The crux is we can be gentle, quiet person and an effective parent but still we need to be firm and set clear limits.

There are many ways to handle child's aggression. We need to be consistent. We can't be ignoring their behavior on one day and respond by screaming at them the next day. Sometimes we need to take our child out of a situation, to help him regain control of his emotions.

At home we can make them follow the rules and ensure they follow them. Writing them down is the best thing since this will make them apply the right behavior and make the behavior concrete in their mind.

There is another situation supposed to be most commonly experienced. A child commits mistake at first place but then blames it on the other for same without taking accountability.  The parent needs to make the child realize that the best way of solving things out is dropping down the weapons rather than pointing them out at the opponent. This is one way of making the children polite and assertive rather than being aggressive.

Ways need to be developed to have problem solving conversations. For example, whenever a little child threatens his sibling to get off the computer the parent is advised to intervene calmly so that the whole situation is managed amiably.

It's common to see misconduct such as quarrels and aggressive exchanges occur in day care and preschools as well.

No wonder this is the way that these children learn to get along with each other but then you cannot let the extremes happen and sit down in ignorance. We also need to coordinate well with the caretaker so that we both are consistent.

We should check in with the caretaker regularly so as to make sure that the behavior is improving.

If you have a child in primary school and you see symptoms of aggression in him, you must keep his behavior under check by keeping proper communication with the teachers concerned there.

Changing and becoming a more effective parent can be a very long process. But we can make it short by taking small steps everyday to reach our goal of good parenthood faster. Never feel discouraged.  Just like your children give their tests in school, it is your time to give tests as a parent and succeed in parenthood.

Breathe out and slowly lift your body using your forearms as a support. Breathe in and squeeze in your muscles of the stomach. You shall have to stay in that position for 30 seconds at least an then restart the same thing again.

 

 

3) Standing dumbbell:  Keep your feet apart than your shoulders and make your right arm suspend a dumbbell sideways. Keep the bend to a level that your fingers touch your left temple.

 

4)  Side bends :Lean down to your left like a tea pot and slide up your right arm holding the dumbbell and slide down the dumbbell on your left towards your left foot. Repeat on the other side.

 

A regular workout and healthy meal would help you trim down the side fat. So stay positive, stay strong.

Statistics from the American Diabetes Association reveals that Type 2 diabetes affects as many as 28 million Americans.  The number of people affected by it is rising every day. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is being projected that 40 percent of all Americans now alive are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

This form of diabetes was once also known as “adult onset. In this condition, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s ability to use that insulin is degraded. The medications that are available today to treat this condition just target the symptoms and do nothing about the root cause of the disease. However, a new study has said hope that a way to treat the disease at the source can be found. The new study from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School reveal that a modified form of a different drug “ niclosamide often used to remove intestinal parasites may have the key to battle the disease at the source.

This study which was led by Victor Shengkan Jin, an associate professor of pharmacology at Rutgers Robert is published online in the journal Nature Medicine. Jin is of the opinion that it is important to find a suitable medication that can correct the cause of diabetes 2 as soon as possible. The only cure known presently involves a major gastric bypass surgery which can be only performed on highly obese people. It also has a significant health risk which also includes death. So, for most people it is not a practical solution.

Jin says that a major cause of insulin resistance is the concentration of excess fat in the cells of the liver, as well as in muscle tissue. The fat is the culprit that disrupts the process where, ordinarily, insulin would cause body tissues to correctly absorb glucose “ blood sugar “ and use it as a fuel. Since, it gets nowhere to go, much of the excess glucose remains in the bloodstream. It the blood sugar is in high concentrations, it can damage tissues throughout the body which can also lead to other potential problem like blindness, kidney damage, cardiovascular diseases, etc.

The aim of the study in context was to find a safe and viable way to diminish fat content in the liver. Mice models were used to perform the experiments in the laboratory. The successful researchers in removing fat, and that in turn improved the animals’ ability to use insulin correctly and reduced the blood sugar levels. The name of the modified medication is niclosamide ethanolamine salt (NEN) and it burned the excess fat in liver cells via a process termed as mitochondrial uncoupling.

Mitochondria are the microscopic energy source for each cell in the body, and they are responsible for burning fuels including fats and sugars in needed quantities so that the cells keep functioning. Once the fat is burned, the sugar was able to enter the cell normally. Jim is of the opinion that getting rid of the interference of fat in the liver is muscle tissue is significant for restoring the cells’ ability to respond to insulin properly. It would eventually allow the right amount of sugar to be taken up by cells and thus will reverse the diabetes entirely.  Jin also added that more research in the study is needed however; the positive changes he saw in the mice are encouraging and are good enough reason to go further.

The drug used by Jin in modified form is already approved by the FDA for human use. It was deliberately chosen as the aim was to develop a safe and practical compound to deplete fat inside cells.
