Training Brain

The brain and mind have long been taken as givens, aspects of ourselves that are so incredibly complex and baffling that to try and improve their health is a futile exercise. Instead, we focus on our diets and personal images in a manner that befits the physical to a far greater degree than the mental. Though such action is indeed important, the sheer lack of attention diverted to such exploits, compared to that given to the brain, is a cause for concern, one that is magnified when recent figures and home truths regarding mental illness are taken into account.

According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in ten American adults are reporting some form of depression and eleven percent of all U.S citizens over the age of twelve is receiving antidepressant medication. Between 1987 and 2007, two and a half times more people qualified for the Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance, two welfare initiatives that aim to assist those who are stricken by mental disorders and suffer a reduction in income as a result. In 1987 1 in 184 claimed the allowance, in 2007, 1 in 76.

This mental health pandemic; and it should be labelled a pandemic, especially when there has been a thirty-five fold increase in that rate of mental illness in children between 1987 and 2007; is both a pressing current issue and a public health timebomb.

How can we improve our brains, hopefully warding off this tidal wave of depression and mental illness? First off, by training your brain; playing games such as puzzles, crosswords, sudokus, even poker games such as those that can find at Casinos ; and indulging in other activities that test and train your mental acuity, decision-making and abstract reasoning skills, your brain can be exercised much like a bicep is exercised on gym equipment.

Secondly, by doing something you love you can improve your entire brain's outlook. It may sound like an irritable clique, but at a time when Gallup polls indicate that seventy percent of Americans hate their jobs, a key reason for this incredible rise in mental illness is made clear. Depression is one of the key mental illnesses earmarked by medical professionals, and the one that will (and does) create the greatest strain on our health services, society and family.

Finally, be social. See your friends often. Make new friends. To escape age-related mental illnesses such as dementia, the mere act of being around people, talking and spending time together can avert mental degeneration.

Ovarian Cyst

An ovarian cyst is a sac which is filled with fluid and found within an ovary. If there is a follicle in the ovary which is bigger than 2 centimetres, it is considered as an ovarian cyst.

The size of the ovarian cyst may be different; it may be very small and maybe as big as an orange. Most of these cysts found in the ovary are benign. It is mostly seen in case of premenopausal women and only in small percentage in case of postmenopausal women.

If the size of the ovarian cysts is bigger than 5 centimeters, than it may be necessary to remove them using surgical procedure.

These cysts are most common during the childbearing years of women. However, in some cases it is also found in women of different ages. In general, these cysts do not show any symptom and painless but in some women pain and bleeding may be seen.

Ovarian cysts are mainly of two types-functional ovarian cysts and pathological ovarian cysts.

ovarian cyst

Common Causes of ovarian cysts

Functional ovarian cyst

(A)   follicular cysts

It is considered as the most common ovarian cyst. In female human body, an egg is released every month which is covered with a follicle containing fluid for protection of the egg. After the release of the egg, the follicle bursts. However, sometimes the follicle does not shrink after release of the egg and it may not release the fluid inside it. In that case, swelling of the follicle filled with fluid results in a follicular ovarian cyst.

(B)   Luteal ovarian cyst

After the release of the egg from the ovary, some tissues (corpus luteum) may be left behind. When these tissues are filled with blood, luteal cyst form. Generally, such cyst disappear after a few months of formation. This is not very common.

Pathological cysts

(A)   Dermoid cysts

In case of women under 30 years, dermoid cyst is the most commonly found type of ovarian cyst. This is a very unusual type of tumour. Totipotential germ cells are the cells that can create cells that are capable of forming mature cells. Dermoid cysts develop from such germ cells and may have skin, hair, bone and even teeth. Even though this is a benign cyst, it should be removed by surgical operation.

(B)   Cystadenomas

Cystadenomas is most commonly found in case of women who are over 40 years. These cysts form from the outer covering of the ovary. They do not grow inside the ovary rather attach to it with a stalk. These cysts may contain mucous like substance or watery fluid. Cystadenomas cysts should also be removed surgically.

The possibility of ovarian cyst increases with some specific conditions which include endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Endometriosis

Women who have endometriosis are more likely to develop ovarian cysts. This is a medical condition where endometrial cells (cells present inside the uterus) grow outside of the uterus.

PCOS

Women with PCOS are more likely to develop ovarian cysts. In polycystic ovarian syndrome, small cysts appear on the ovaries due to imbalance of hormones.

According to the doctors, there are several risk factors present in case of ovarian cyst that may result in the medical condition.  These risk factors include age, obesity, smoking,  using fertility medicines,  hormonal replacement therapy,  previous history of ovarian cyst  the family, not having children, not breastfeeding etc. If you have these risk factors, you should be very careful and in case of any initial symptoms of ovarian cyst, should consult your doctor immediately. Timely medical attention is what you need to avoid future complications.

Yeast Infection

A yeast infection can cause significant discomfort among women, but the good news is there are many cures available in managing its symptoms. The treatments for a yeast infection are available in different forms and the response to treatment often varies from individuals. You need to find the best remedies for a yeast infection and your doctor can help you find the most ideal treatment solution where you are more responsive for a better recovery.

Yeast infection overview

Yeast infection is common among women and it is caused by an inflammation of the vaginal structures which is a condition called as vaginitis. The condition can become bothersome because of the intense itchiness that may occur along with a vaginal discharge. The vaginitis is also called as vaginal candidiasis that usually affects 3 out of 4 women. A yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted disease and usually responds well to treatment. Recurrent yeast infections, however, may require repeated treatment until complete remission from the infection is attained.

Treatable symptoms of a yeast infection

Common symptoms of vaginitis are treatable which involves the following common manifestations:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • Burning sensation while urinating and during intercourse
  • Pain and soreness
  • Vaginal discharge consisting of white, odorless and thick mucus with a cottage cheese appearance

It is possible, however, that the infection may cause complications under the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes
  • Soreness and fissures of the vaginal tissues
  • Recurrence of the condition at least four times in a year
  • The infection is caused by bacteria other than Candida Albicans
  • Low immunity

Causes and risk factors

There are varying causes for yeast infection to occur. It may be due to the medications you take such as an antibiotic that kills the healthy or good bacteria protecting the vaginal flora. The presence of diabetes can also make a person more susceptible to infection and it is most common among individuals with impaired immune system. The most common causes of the infection are Candida Albicans, but they always respond well to treatments. Other forms of bacteria, however, may resist other forms of treatment, making the recovery from the infection more difficult. Sexual activity and high levels of estrogen can also increase the risks for a yeast infection.

Cures for a yeast infection

The traditional treatment prescribed for the curing a yeast infection consists of suppositories, creams and oral medications.

1.       Suppositories and creams

Suppositories and creams prescribed for treating a yeast infection contain miconazole as an active ingredient. Applicators are provided in order to insert the suppository properly to release the anti-fungal medication to the infected area. Creams are applied externally along the vulva in order to control the symptoms of itchiness. Sexual activity is avoided during the course of treatment which usually takes up to seven days.

2.       Oral medications

Diflucan is usually prescribed as an oral medication for yeast infections. It is a one-time medication taken that provides a quick relief to the common discomfort and symptoms experienced. It is a more practical solution in treating the infection and is more convenient method of curing the yeast infection. However, you will need a prescription to be able to buy the drug and it is contraindicated among pregnant women.

Doctors usually do not prescribe any treatment for a mild yeast infection, especially when the condition is not too bothersome and do not result in significant discomfort. The infection may go away without any medical intervention. Most of the time, doctors ask to wait a few days before prescribing any treatment because the condition is sometimes self remitting and disappears naturally.

premature ejaculation

premature ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man reaches orgasm earlier than he intends to. It is estimated that 30% to 70% of American males experience premature ejaculation. Although there is no cure for premature ejaculation, there are treatment modalities that are established to manage the condition.

Signs and Symptoms of Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation may either be lifelong or acquired. In lifelong premature ejaculation, the person may experience symptoms as soon as he begins having a sexual intercourse. In acquired premature ejaculation, the person was able to have successful sexual relationships in the past and only later developed premature ejaculation.

The symptoms and clinical history of lifelong premature ejaculation may include psychological difficulties, deep anxiety about sex or traumatic experiences encountered during development. Patient characteristics among acquired premature ejaculation include erectile dysfunction, performance anxiety, and psychotropic drug use.

Diagnosis for Premature Ejaculation

There are actually no significant finding that should be found in the laboratory exams and evaluation of the individual unless there are other conditions that co-exist. Diagnosis usually relates to the history and interview findings of the individual. However, the conditions that are considered in the diagnosis of premature ejaculation include severely delayed orgasm in the female partner, adverse effect of the psychotropic drug, presence of pre-ejaculate and erectile dysfunction.

Treatment of Premature Ejaculation

There is no cure for premature ejaculation. However, there are a number of approaches that would help the individual overcome the condition. Management focuses on counseling and sex therapy. The first step is to relieve any underlying pressure on the sexual performance of the male. It is recommended that the couple should refrain from having sexual intercourse until the problem is resolved. In the meantime, they may resort to manual stimulation, oral sex and other means to satisfy his partner.

Pharmacologic Therapy for Premature Ejaculation

Until now, there has been no approved medication for the treatment of premature ejaculation. However, there are a number of medications used and are proven to be safe and effective for the management of premature ejaculation. These drugs include SSRIs (serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors) and drugs with SSRI-like side effects.  Desensitizing creams containing local anesthetic agents can also be useful in some men that have erectile dysfunction.

Sex Therapy

Sex therapy is known to provide assistance to men in helping them cope with their medical problem. The therapeutic procedure can help address the various problems arising from a premature ejaculation. The therapy does not only extend in resolving sexual issues between partners. It also helps address different conditions that can contribute to the premature ejaculation in one way or another. These associated conditions include self-esteem problem, distorted body image concept, conflicting religious beliefs and values between the partners, lack of sexual desire, sexual addiction, compulsive masturbation, anxiety, stress and negative attitude towards sex. To make a sex therapy more meaningful, partners should be directly involved throughout the process of treatment.

A sex therapy can provide an enriching treatment process that involves not only the man affected with the condition, but also his partner who plays an important support system in helping to overcome the physiological and psychological effects of premature ejaculation.

Although there are no known direct morbidity and mortality among individuals with premature ejaculation, it could still alter their self esteem, may cause marital problem and depression. Prolonged and severe premature ejaculation can cause stress to marriages as well as difficulty in conception. If you experience any of the symptoms of premature ejaculation, be sure to make an appointment with your health care provider for better management.

yeast Infection

If you are a woman and experiences an irritation of your vagina with the feeling of itchiness and burning sensation around it, you might have a yeast infection. This is a condition that is very common in women, affecting about 75 of the female population. The infection is caused by a fungal infection with Candida Albicans as the most common source of the infection. The vaginal flora normally fosters the growth of small amounts of yeast, but when there are too much yeasts around it, infection takes place. While a minor yeast infection is common among women, it can cause irritating and bothersome symptoms. Some infection is usually self remitting and goes away while major infection will require treatment.

Yeast infection can occur in both men and women

While the most common yeast infection occurs in the genital and affecting mostly the female population, it can also affect men. Yeast infection of the genitals in men occurs among those who are uncircumcised. An Oral yeast infection called thrust can also affect both genders, especially those who are suffering from sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS, infants, the elderly, those undergoing a chemotherapy and the presence of a weak autoimmune system. Diabetics and people taking antibiotics and of steroid medication are likely to be susceptible to the infection as well. A thrush is a form of a yeast infection that can progress to affect the bloodstream, resulting in more serious complications.

Causes of yeast infection

There are many known causes why yeast infection occurs. A woman's genital area usually has healthy bacteria that keep it protected against infection. However, hormonal changes can alter the state of the bacteria and may cause them to thrive in numbers that are more than the normal. When they do, this throws off the environmental balance in the vaginal area. While the normal pH balance of the genitals is acidic, physiological changes can cause the acidity to drop from its normal level, thereby allowing yeasts to thrive and multiply to cause the infection. Wearing a tight underwear can also change the pH level of the genitals, especially when they are made from synthetic fabric that does not allow a better air circulation that harbors yeasts to grow.

The acidity level of the vaginal flora can also change upon using scented sprays, douches and bubble bath. Birth control pills and a heavy period can also alter the normal pH balance due to hormonal changes. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels among diabetics can also cause the infection as well as conditions that makes a person prone to have a weak immune system. The taking of antibiotics can kill the healthy bacteria, hence, the person becomes prone to infection. Prolonged use of steroid can also increase the risk of yeast infection even when taken in lower doses.

Symptoms of yeast infection

The symptoms of a yeast infection can be bothersome even on mild infections. Yeast infection on the genitals results in the symptoms of pain during urination, itchiness, burning sensation, redness, inflammation or swelling around the vagina, thick discharge, rash and soreness. Males often experience rashes, redness and burning feeling at the penile tip. The infection can also cause white spots to appear inside the mouth and on the tongue, redness and a feeling of discomfort in the mouth. Some may experience difficulty in swallowing as well as a sore throat. The corners of the mouth may also crack.

Diagnosing yeast infection

Most of the yeast infections are mild and do not warrant a visit to a doctor. However, whenever you feel that the infection is becoming worse and does not go away after a few days, you probably need to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. Some individuals manifest their yeast infection that is accompanied by abdominal pain, fever and a foul smelling discharge. It is best to have your regular check-up to get a complete assessment of your condition as there could be the presence of other medical conditions and complications that you should be concerned about. A doctor may collect a sample of your vaginal discharge and run some lab tests to get a more accurate diagnosis. A yeast culture may also be the process of diagnosing your condition where the doctor can identify what bacterial infection may be causing your symptoms. It is possible that you may have trichomoniasis which is a bacterial vaginosis that requires a different form of treatment.

Home Remedies for yeast infection

yeast infection

observe proper hygeine

Aside from the traditional medications prescribed to overcome the symptoms of a yeast infection, there are natural remedies available from home that you can use for its treatment.

  1. Keep yourself dry. A moist condition encourages the growth of bacteria in your genitals. It is best to wear breathable underwear. Change your bathing suit immediately after swimming for a long time.
  2. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, non-fat dairy products, yogurt and whole grains as part of a healthy diet. These food groups will help fight infections effectively.
  3. Avoid cleansing the genitals with soap with harmful chemicals and feminine hygiene products that can make the infection worse.
  4. If the infection is causing a painful intercourse, you might consider avoiding the activity until your infection disappears.
  5. Sit in warm water in a bath tub to ease the discomfort of a painful and swollen genital.
  6. Use a damp, cold cloth on the irritated area for comfort.

These home remedies may just not be enough to help you treat the more serious yeast infection. Seeing your doctor is the best option to secure a better home management option to help treat your condition.

Pregnancy weight

Monitoring weight during pregnancy

Pregnancy is a crucial event for every woman where various physiological and emotional responses are commonly experienced. Furthermore, it becomes more crucial, especially for women who are figure-conscious. Most often, body image (the way you see your body) changes during pregnancy as the woman views herself as becoming biggerť in many aspects. That is why health and figure conscious women are always finding ways on how to keep their weight controlled during pregnancy without causing any hazards to their health and their baby.

Recommended weight gain during pregnancy

It is significant for every pregnant woman to know that weight gain should take place throughout pregnancy. The weight gain of a pregnant mother is usually associated with the course and outcome of the pregnancy. A weight gain of 11.2 to 15.9 kg (25 to 35 lbs) is ideal to be an average weight gain during pregnancy for women who have appropriate weight for their height. It occurs at approximately 0.4 kg (1 lb) per month during the first trimester and 0.4 kg (1 lb) per week during the second and third trimesters.

However, for women who are underweight, they should gain 30 to 40 pounds or 0.5 kg per month for the first three months and 0.5 kg per week for the succeeding months of gestation. Underweight women are recommended to gain 15 to 25 pounds while the obese ones are advised to gain less than 15 pounds. Pregnant women who have multiple fetuses are encouraged to gain 40 to 45 pounds.

Do's and Don'ts to maintain weight during pregnancy

The process of maintaining your ideal weight during pregnancy is important. Labor and childbirth process is easier when the woman is healthy and the potential complications occurring during the pregnancy stage can be avoided. For your guidance, keep in mind these do's and don't's while trying to maintain your weight during pregnancy to ensure a safe weight gain and weight loss control program for a healthy pregnancy.

  • Do avoid smoking.
  • Do exercise regularly (mild to moderate exercise such as walking will do everyday for 30 minutes).
  • Don't eat salty and fried foods.
  • Don't drink caffeine rich beverages as well as tea, chocolate, and soft drinks.
  • Don't consume alcoholic drinks.

The benefits of maintaining weight during pregnancy

The ideal weight for pregnant women

The benefits of maintaining an ideal weight during pregnancy are numerous. Doctors always recommend getting the proper exercise and a healthy diet in order to avoid risks and other potential complications that may possibly arise during pregnancy until childbirth.

1.            Reduced risk of mechanical complications at birth.

Greater-than-expected weight gain can lead to big infants that may result to birth trauma, the need for operative birth, emergency Cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage, wound, genital tract, urinary infection and late fetal death.

2.            Reduced risk of premature birth and small-for-gestational age infants.

Severely underweight women are more likely to give birth to premature or small-for-gestational age infants.

3.           Returning to the pre-pregnancy weight is easier (or appropriate weight for height) within six months after birth.

Women who gained weight during their pregnancy often experience the difficulty of recovering their pre-pregnancy weight. It usually takes a longer time before the body regains back its normal physiological functions after the changes that have taken place during the pregnancy, making the recovery more difficult post pregnancy. By keeping your weight controlled while pregnant, it is easier to help the body to recover faster and regain back its ideal weight and shape.

4.            Risk reduction of potential complications during pregnancy and childbirth

The excess weight gained during pregnancy may be difficult to lose after giving birth. That may lead to obesity and other complications such as diabetes mellitus, and hypertension.

Causes of excess or inadequate weight during pregnancy

  • Inadequate dietary intakeWeight reduction diet is not a good time during pregnancy. This leads to decreased nutrient intake that may negatively affect fetal growth and development, and the mother's own nutrition. Adequate protein and vitamin intake helps prevent complications of pregnancy.
  • Excessive eating. Achieving good nutrition for a pregnant woman does not mean eating two meals of an adult, but just enough to provide nutrients to the fetus. This also emphasizes that the focus should be on increasing the quality of food intake rather than on the quantity.
  • Development of PIH. Pregnancy-induced hypertension, also known as preeclampsia leads to the accumulation of fluids that may affect accurate monitoring of weight gain.
  • Measurement or recording errorsThe weight of the clothing and time of day the woman is weighed affects the accuracy of monitoring the weight gain.
