Many people are anxious about seeing their dentist. No-one particularly likes sitting in the dentistââ¬â¢s chair and getting treatment, however, some people are afraid to go to the dentist. The good news is that you can ease your fears so your twice-yearly visits are a little less daunting.
Look for a Dentist Who Treats Anxious Patients
These days itââ¬â¢s easy to find a dentist who is happy to treat anxious patients. Dentists such as these take extra time to make sure youââ¬â¢re comfortable.
If you think youââ¬â¢ve found a suitable dentist you should ask if you can visit the surgery to have a look around. Most dentists will let you do this. You might even get to meet the receptionists and your prospective dentist. Having a look around the surgery can help you to get a feel of what it will be like. Chances are it wonââ¬â¢t be as bad as you thought.
Dentists and their receptionists are there to make your appointment as comfortable as possible. However, they need to know that youââ¬â¢re feeling anxious so they can take extra care of you. Some dentists even offer longer appointments so you can talk about how youââ¬â¢re feeling while they explain the procedure.
Choose An Early Appointment
Choose an appointment early on in the day. This will give you less time to worry about it. If you have not had any treatment for a while the first appointment will be a check-up. This is where the dentist takes a look at your teeth and the general health of your mouth. They will tell you if they are concerned about anything. This is also the time when you can tell your dentist if youââ¬â¢ve had any problems with your teeth.
Your check-up is also an opportunity for you to get to know your dentist and determine whether you like them. Chances are your dentist will be kind to you, especially if you’re anxious.
Take a Friend
If you donââ¬â¢t want to go to the dentist on your own you can always take a friend with you. No dentist will complain about you having someone with you during the check-up or any treatment.
While your appointment is taking place you might want to agree to give your dentist a sign that means you would like them to stop. You can point your finger, raise your hand or even wave it. This will give you a sense of control and let the dentist know they need to stop.
Start off Slowly
If you donââ¬â¢t want to throw yourself in at the deep end you could start off slowly. Begin with a clean and a polish rather than opting to visit an implant dentist who can insert implants.
At another appointment discuss any treatments that you might need. This can help you to build up a bit of trust with your dentist.
If you are scared of needles you could ask your dentist about using a numbing gel as it can be quite effective.
If the thought of getting work done makes you feel panicky you can use the above tips to make the whole process easier on yourself. Be kind to yourself so you can be kind to your teeth.
