Muscle or ligament strain

Bulging or ruptured disks
Disks are like questions between the different bones in the spine. In some cases the soft material present inside at disk may bulge out or rupture. In that case, the disk may press on a nerve. However, that may not cause any back pain. Such problems are found out when x-rays are done.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis can cause lower back pain because it affects the lower back. If arthritis of the spine happens, it may result in narrowing down the present around the spinal cord (spinal stenosis).
Skeletal irregularities
If there are some irregularities with the spine, then back pain may happen. If there is a curve in an abnormal way in the spine, then back pain may happen. Scoliosis, in which the spine curves to the side, may also result in back pain.
Osteoporosis
If somehow the bones become brittle and porous, then compression fracture of the vertebrae may happen. In that case, back pain may happen.
