Cold and flu

The following few home remedies to relieve cold would certainly rev up your recovery process, if not completely cure your cold overnight. Try the following tips to recover faster from cold and flu:

1. Drop The Bottle

You may have to take a break from alcohol until you recover. It interferes with sleep quality and you are much more likely to get sick when you’re sleep-deprived. So slow down the alcohol intake and press start the recovery mode.

2. Tea For Total Recovery

Drink hot black or green tea with lemon and honey or cinnamon. Drinking this concoction of aromas and spices and breathing in its warm steam will stimulate the hair follicles in the nose and will move out germs and bacteria more efficiently. Moreover, lemon thins mucus, cinnamon is warming and honey is antibacterial.

3. Have more protein

Research shows that diets high in good quality protein can boost your immune system so you can fight cold and flu more efficiently and diets that are too low in protein can deplete the immune system. So make sure to incorporate protein-rich foods in your diet throughout the day, especially lean protein like fish, eggs and yogurt.

4. Wipe It Out

Gyms and health clubs are crawling with sweaty towels, dirty sneakers and other contaminated items. Instead of coming in contact with them, place a clean towel first. Make sure you are hygienic at home as well clean contaminated items before using them with antibacterial wipes or dispose them off, if possible.

Sanitize your office space and drawers, keys and door knobs to prevent the infection from spreading further.

5. A Juicy Start

You never know what germs you’ll be encountering so make sure to drink water constantly to flush toxins out through the lymph system. During the cold and flu season, try to live on fruit juices. Use kale, broccoli, apple, parsley, carrots, lemon, oranges, grapefruit and mint to prepare juice at home. These juices contain concentrated amounts of minerals and cold fighting enzymes.

6. Breathe In Or Out?

Try to avoid breathing in contaminated air around you. It’s not so easy but if a person standing close to you sneezes, hold your breath and move away to take fresh breath if you want to save yourself the trauma of a running nose.

7. You Knead Help

Get a massage once a month to increase blood circulation. It boosts immunity by nourishing cells with more oxygen and blood. It makes you relaxed and less stressed, and you are no longer a germ magnet when you’re less stressed.

8. Zinc About It

If you get a scratchy throat or probably just an ongoing itching in your throat and think there’s a slight chance that you might be catching a cold, just pop in a few strepsils or cough relieving throat medicines with zinc. They relieve symptoms and can get you better faster.

9. Relieve Your Nose

Do a daily nasal rinse to prevent blockage and concentration germs and also to facilitate deep breathing. You can use a bulb syringe to flush out infected mucus and viruses and help clear secretions. This age old technique of cleaning your nasal passage is the best way to stay away from infection and preventing it from spreading.

10. Call It A Day

Take that cup of hot tea and that box of tissues to the bed and forget about the rest. The best and the easiest way to recover is to rest.

Pregnancy Stretch

Pregnancy brings about a lot of changes in a woman's life. Not only her lifestyle changes, there are significant changes in her body too. One of the major one among them are stretch marks. 90% of the women get stretch marks during their pregnancy. They typically appear in the third trimester on the belly and can also occur on the hips, buttocks and breast.

Before getting into the details of how to deal with them, let us first try and understand why it occurs. Simply put, stretch marks occur when a body grows faster than its skin can keep up with. During the third trimester, the stomach of a woman gets bigger to accommodate the baby and as a result the skin stretches excessively. Since, it stretches too much and too quickly, the elastic fiber under the skin begins to break up thereby resulting in stretch marks. The marks are often red or purple in the beginning but gradually they fade to white or gray.

Determining who will develop stretch marks during pregnancy is difficult. It is believed that there is a hereditary component at play as well. If you mom, sister, etc., got them during pregnancy, it is likely that you might get it too. Other than that large baby size, having twins and having excessive amniotic fluid also influences the occurrence of stretch marks. These factors are beyond our control. However, there are certain other factors that influence the occurrence of stretch marks where we can exercise control. How much weight is gained during a pregnancy and how quick it is gained also matters a lot. Gaining weight slowly over the period of nine months will give the skin the time to adjust rather than the massive weight gain that occurs in the final month.

Having the right diet during pregnancy is also important as it can reduce the severity of stretch marks. One should stress on having a diet rich in vitamin A, C and E, protein, zinc and silica since, these nutrients increases the skin's elasticity.Drinking plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated is also important. Also, one must reduce the intake of caffeine as it is known to reduce skin's elasticity.

There are many creams, lotions and oils in the market that claim to prevent stretch marks, but there is no proof if they really are so effective. Lanolin and cocoa butter are not known to specifically help in reducing stretch marks, but they are definitely good for your skin. So, there is no harm in applying them. Taking care to prevent the occurrence of stretch marks is a good idea. However, it may not prevent their occurrence all together. Of course, there are other ways of doing away with them after pregnancy, if you are not comfortable in your new skin.

If you are looking to improve your skin without going under the knife, then the best thing to do would be to take the topical application route. You can use exfoliating products like Retin-A and glycolic acid which actually works by removing the uppermost layer of skin and stimulates the formation of new skin, thereby reducing g the severity of the scars. However, if you want a more impressive result, you should consult your dermatologist about laser therapy or a tummy tuck surgical process. But, remember the more invasive the process is, the more costly it will be and it is likely that such processes will not be covered under insurance.

If you prefer the natural way and do not want to splurge too much to get the perfect skin back, you will have to just wait and see the stretch mark fade gradually over time.

wearable Gadget

wearable Gadget

The year 2014 will see the field of healthcare as the greatest potential holder for wearable gadgets aimed at better health. Wearable technology is beginning to revolutionize the healthcare industry by not only assisting doctors in the operating room but also by providing real time access to electronic health records. The impact of wearable technology is almost tangible and is already being felt among other fields such as education, navigation, communication and entertainment. The benefits of wearable technology in healthcare go well beyond just assisting doctors. People who decide to sport these gadgets can now continuously monitor their own heartbeat, blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, etc.

Healthy Opinion

Experts believe that the adoption of wearable healthcare devices and health monitoring gadgets could indeed be a significant step in patient engagement and improving population health. To be more specific, wearable health gadgets would bring three distinctly beneficial trends in the market:

  • Connected Information,
  • Community and
  • Ramification

Is The Future Of Healthcare Here?

Wearable technology is a continuously growing industry that is fully equipped to meet the ever-changing health related needs of our world and the world that will be in the future. The market has much health and fitness related technologies that are easy to use and present no hassles, and make interpreting the statistical feedback and reports quite a simple task. The applications of this technology are endless and are breaking all barriers including the emotional instability of the human nature. This technology encourages wearers to be more cautious about their own fitness. It modifies their behavior by reminding them to work out or start a running session or take their medicine, and also provides a common platform for patients and physicians to share important statistics and formulate health strategies.

Wearable Technology Will Impact Healthcare And Here's How….

Educating and empowering patients to take control of their health

Patients will now be able to rely on time tested modern technology for their health issues. They will have access to real-time personal health data within seconds and in their hands. Gone will be the days of solely relying on a doctor's professional opinion and reports on their health progress. After owning one of these high end devices patients will monitor their own health while at home or on the job or on the go. They will be educated and well informed about themselves and make their health decisions on their own

Doctor And Patient Co-ordinate

Some wearable technology and gadgets will be able to send patient’s health related data directly to the doctor. Any information about organ function and potential diseases will get sent right to the physicians. This will give them access to in-depth knowledge when to successfully monitor a chronic disease if any. Diabetics do already benefit from a number of technologies. These gadgets monitor blood sugar levels, deliver insulin, track diet and level of activity and transmit data directly to doctors.

Assistance In Medical Procedures

The possibilities that wearable medical technology show us are probably limitless. Surgeons wearing specially designed glasses for direct broadcasts can give other doctors and medical students the ideal perspective and viewing angle during surgery and other medical procedures.

Pain Management

This advanced technology will develop portable pain relief devices that will make the need for daily pain medication extinct for over a billion chronic pain sufferers across international borders the world. The Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) patch is being designed which will deliver low-voltage electric charge to alleviate pain in chronic patients. Patients and physicians will be able to track and manage pain through blue tooth connectivity to a smart phone app.

Fitness= Fun

The currently available health monitoring devices help users track and monitor bodily functions such as sleep patterns, fitness levels, calorie intake, etc. This is making health and fitness more fun as one gets to set goals, challenges and socially interact about the same.

Get Fit

People are unique. They follow fitness regimes that are unique to their body type and eat accordingly too. They have their allergies, turn ons and belief systems. But the concept of overtraining is similar and applies to all INA singular fashion. When you exercise too much what follows is list of signs that indicate you may be overtraining.

1. Failure at normal workout.

Training to failure as a rule is fine but failure to train is not fine at all. When you fail to lift the weights you usually lift or run the sprints you usually run or complete the hike you normally do is when it’s alarming. It means Regression is setting in and your stamina is deteriorating despite regular training.

2. You’re losing leanness despite increased exercise.

This happens when the hormonal balance gets tipped and instead of losing fat we lose precious muscle mass and this is an effect of over training or exercising too much.

3. Not every day you silly boy!

You will have to be genetic freak to lift the heaviest, sprint fast and recover as fast as your favorite teenage mutant ninja you crave to become. That is something not everyone can attain so take chill pill and give that much needed break to your body. It will only enhance your performance.

4. When a primarily anaerobic/power/explosive/strength athlete is on rest and is unable to do so due to restlessness, excitability, and inability to sleep in their down time, that’s when their sympathetic nervous system over works and it is due to too much exercising.

5. When an endurance athlete feels useless and is overly fatigued, sluggish that means too much resistance training is causing decreased testosterone levels, increased cortisol levels, debilitating fatigue (both mental and physical).

6. We’re joined at the hip.

Exercise and pain go hand in hand. When high on endorphins, you might not notice the pains in your knees or joints or limbs but they can’t be avoided. It is time to take a recess and also to reassess that routine that you’ve been so fond of for so long. There are many types of workouts and exercises that put pressure and stress in our no joints which is very difficult to assess in the endorphin rush.

7. Can’t stay away from disease?

An increase in your daily workout regime might result directly in a fall in your immunity. With the motive to add more muscle and strength to our body we often overlook the damages more exercises can cause and thus our immunity lags behind and we fall I’ll more often. Keeping a track of your health and hygiene becomes a priority. Not many people know the onset of disease that overtraining can bring about and thus are ignorant of this fact.

8. Not feeling up to a squat after a workout?

Well, too much exercise would do that too. Yes, when you feel like crap the hours and days after a big workout is when you feel like getting a head rush every time you stand up from that wretched office chair. You should feel good all day long or is it just a momentary thing? No, it isn’t. That glow that a workout promises throughout the day should be there, instead you revel in the negativity of fatigue and sluggishness.

Well, you said it. Be the one to take control of it now. Don’t let it control you. It is time to change your schedule, reset your goals and start afresh with a new perspective.

Sport Injuries

We all like to play sports a little now and then. Some people are good at badminton, cricket while others excel at football. Playing sports can be a little treat for your body and also a great way to take a break from that boring routine of yours.

However, playing Sports involve certain injuries as well. Some injuries are minor ones while others can cost you a lot of damage. Some of the most common sports injuries are:

Ankle Sprain and Strain:

Ankle Sprain and Strain are THE MOST COMMON Sports Injuries that happen to every one out of three people. There is a slight difference between the terms sprain and strain. An ankle sprain is basically a torn or stretched ligament. For those people who don't know about ligaments, ligaments are tissues that basically connect bones at the joint. So, whenever you have an ankle sprain, this means that you have caused one of the ligaments to tear down. Falling, getting hurt or twisting can all cause an ankle sprain.

An ankle strain, on the other hand, is a torn or stretched tendon or muscle. Now what are tendons? Tendons are the tissues that connect muscles to bones. Playing too much or playing after a long time can cause the ankle to get strained. Strains may develop over time or can happen suddenly as well.

The immediate solution for these two is to rest the injured ankle. Experts suggest that applying ice or wearing a bandage can also help in relaxing the muscles. The later treatment might require physical therapy and exercise.

Knee Injury:

Another painful injury is the knee injury. According to the recent survey, over five million people go to the orthopedic surgeons every year. Knee injuries can be minor ones as well as really severe ones. Minor knee injuries include runner's knee or tendonitis. Runner's knee is the condition in which the runner feels pain or tenderness near the front of the knee cap. Tendonitis is the inflammation within a tendon. Severe injuries can include damaging the ligaments. Four of the major ligament injuries are the Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL), the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) and the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

Fractures:

Ouch! I know! Fractures are another common injury in Sports and the most painful ones too. Fractures or broken bones are either caused when the body falls or hits something (an acute fracture) or when repeated stress is applied to a particular part of the bone (a stress fracture). Sometimes, the fractures are hairline fractures, however, sometimes the fractures can be pretty serious and the injured person may have to be rushed to the hospital to get a surgery.

Shin Splints:

As the name suggests, in shin splints, the pain is along the shin bone. Sometimes, the pain is where the bone meets the calf muscles (medial shin splints), or at the front outside of the lower leg. There are also cases when the pain occurs in the foot and ankle (anterior shin splints). Usually people who run the most are the ones who have to deal with the shin splints injury. Running in improper shoes or the shoes that lack proper support, having improper running techniques, not warming up and stretching before running or having flat feet can all contribute to shin splints.

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

A research on pomegranates has found that it has certain properties that can slow down the development and speed of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Olumayokun Olajide, a specialist in anti-inflammatory of natural products, who works at the University of Huddersfield has found this fact through an extensive research on pomegranates. It also reveals the presence of certain compounds in the fruit that can reduce the inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

According to statistics collected, there are at least 44.4 million dementia sufferers all around the world, with the numbers expected to increase in the near future. The two yearlong studies also works on developing drugs which will help cure dementias in the UK where every year 163,000 cases of Alzheimer’s are diagnosed alone and a striking 800,000 people are affected by it. The numbers are bound to increase in coming days, experts say.

Dr. Olajide has also been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield for four years. He also held a post as a Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Drug Research at the University of Munich. He got his PhD from the University of Ibadan in his native Nigeria.

He attributes his area of research to his upbringing. “African mothers normally treat sick children with natural substances such as herbs. My mum certainly used a lot of those substances. And then I went on to study pharmacology!” says Olajide.

Dr. Olajide’s research comes as a ray of hope to patients suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. His research claims that punicalagin, a polypheno, which is a form of chemical compound found in pomegranates, can inhibit inflammation in special brain cells called micro logia. Dr. Olajide worked with a team of specialists, his co-researchers including four PhD students in the department of pharmacy at the University of Huddersfield and with the scientists at the University of Freiburg in Germany.

The inflammation has been recognized as the cause of progression of this disease by the doctors. The research says that the natural compound may not cure the disease, but it can be effective in slowing down its progression. There is still no known cure for these diseases.

Dr. Olajide and his team conducted were successful in their experiment by conducting the tests and analysis on rat brain cells and soon the doctors will start to disseminate these findings at academic conferences. The important findings of the research are published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. The research doesn’t say the exact amount of pomegranate required for the treatment, but the team is working on it so that maximum patients can be treated.

Despite not being sure of the amount of pomegranate to ingest just yet, Dr. Olajide says that a regular intake of this fruit has a lot of health benefits, such as prevention of neuro-inflammation related to dementia. Further, it is not just beneficial for neuro inflammation but also works for any kind of inflammation. He also enumerated that the antioxidant compound responsible for the treatment is found in the outer skin and not in the soft part of pomegranates. Dr. Olajide will be collaborating with his fellow

doctor of University of Huddersfield colleague, the organic chemist Dr. Karl Hemming to develop a drug that could be orally taken.

Dr. Olajide adds that although the complete benefits of pomegranates have yet to be scientifically evaluated. This fruit is expected to be useful in any condition for which any kind of inflammation is a factor, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease and even cancer.

An orally administered drug is the aim of these doctors that are attempting to produce compound derivatives of the compound punicalagin found the fruit. This could be the basis of revolutionary drug that would treat neuro-inflammation.

bRAIN

Imaging studies show that different parts of the brain of autistic children do not connect with each other in typical ways. Initially, most researchers thought that the autistic brainhas fewer connections between key regions. The most recent studies, however, point to an opposite conclusion: The brains of people with autism exhibit over connectivity. Till now, most of the

studies of autistic children have used single imaging technology to explore connectivity. None of those attempts have been successful in capturing a clear view of brain abnormalities that autism brings.

Now, the study of autism takes new turns as two new grants from the National Institute of Mental Health enable Professor Ralph-Axel Muller (San Diego State University, Psychology) in combining three imaging techniques to harness the better of each one. The term “brain imaging” is used a lot for any kind of latest advances in neuroscientific research and psychology, but you need to know that there is a range of different brain imaging techniques. Each of the techniques gives scientists a unique view of the inner workings of the brain, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

For instance we can take the most frequently used technique of functional magnetic resonance imaging. It measures blood flow in all the different parts of the brain at specific time intervals. The results are based on the knowledge premise that increase in blood flow indicates increase in activity of the nerve cells in that part of the brain. This technique is powerful, but is limited when detecting dynamic changes in the brain that happen very fast, i.e. within milliseconds.

EEG (electroencephalography), as we all know is a much older technique for mental imaging but is actually better at detecting dynamic changes in the brain activity. Although it too has its limitations that it cannot successfully pinpoint the location in the brain, wherein the activity occurs.

A more powerful and recent technique is MEG (magnetoencephalography). It can successfully detect dynamic activities and changes in the brain that happen within a short span of time, as short as a few milliseconds.

Muller says it’s important to look for brain activities that have disorganized patterns and could be responsible for some characteristics of autism spectrum disorder in many children. These symptoms may include

lack of attention to social cues and recurring and obsessive behavior.

We take the example of last year, where Muller and his colleagues discovered that autistic children have lesser connectivity between the cerebral cortex and the thalamus. It happens to be a deep brain

Structure that plays an essential role in sensor motor functions and attention.

$4.2 million funding from the NIH, will help Müller, Ksenija Marinkovic at SDSU and other collaborators, i.e. Thomas Liu at the University of California, San Diego to apply EEG, MEG and MRI to effectively study autistic, non-autistic and typically-developing children and teenagers during a variety of tests. An array of language tests will also be employed that are typically designed to kindle activity in various areas of the brain.

This project will have 2 components. One will concern with the visual system. Previous researches in autism show people with autism to be relying on their visual cortex more than normal. Using fMRI and

MEG together, Muller and his team aim at determining the dynamic processes in the brain when its different regions work together to creates a response, and how autism alters these processes.

This study also aims to examine brain functioning in resting state for identifying abnormalities and disharmony in brain network. The combination of EEG and MEG with fMRI techniques, reveal brain anatomy

and will help create a complete picture of the abnormalities in the brain organization in autistic patients.

Ultimate goal of Müller and his colleagues is to identify biomarkers in the brain. It can be very reliable in indicating whether the participant falls on the autism spectrum or not.

Inner Peace

Life is full of various moments, ups and downs, highs and lows that we consider as an amazing and much needed part of human life. The cheerful moments may be in the forms of celebrations like weddings, birthdays, promotions or any moment that brings smile on your face. These wonderful moments bring celebrations, and we feel ourselves on cloud nine with happiness all around. But, there are always two sides of everything that happen. Life also makes us suffer the hard and terrible moments which include having a serious disease, losing a job or anxiety, depression or any terrible incident. Facing such terrible moments in life are no less than a challenge for humans.

When, we start putting the spotlight of our life events just on these terrible incidents, the negative vibe of worry, anxiety and ultimately stress always surrounds us, disturbing the peace of mind. Peace of mind is the state of being calm and composed, mentally and emotionally, in every circumstance, whether it is stress or worry. This inner peace brings happiness and joys in life.

Bringing peace of mind in our lives is not a difficult task or something to worry about. It's just like cleaning up the mess you have created in your room. Similarly, for the inner peace, you just need to throw away all negativities of life, all worry and stress. You just need to feel alive. All the ill thoughts regarding anyone, a friend or foe are a challenging hazard to attain the inner peace or peace of mind.

Some people often think that inner peace is a state of passivity and it makes your life slow and dull. On the contrary, inner peace makes you active, more conscious, alive and happy. It is a state where the strength of mind helps you live your life fully.

Human mind is just like your life, full of stuff, which might be useful or useless. There might be some positive things like books of the room or there might be many negativities similar to the junk or extra, unwanted papers lying in the room. As it is your room, so you have become used to all good and bad things and you have adjusted in it rather than cleaning it up.

Everyone prefers a peaceful mind in front of the restless and stressed mind. Worries were never a favourite emotion of human behaviour. There are many benefits and life-long positive results of keeping mind peaceful and removing all the junk and spam from the brains:

  • Peace of mind leads to a better health, mentally and physically.
  • It makes you more efficient in daily chores.
  • The decision making power becomes more effective and positive.
  • It leads to strong memory, and ability to grasp things faster.
  • It helps human to handle different situations in a better way.
  • It makes you calm and composed.

The peace of mind is not a magic spell, or can't be achieved overnight. It is a gradual process, where you learn with time and practice. It is nothing more than changing the perspective of what you think and how you think. Restraining your mind from negative vibes, and indulging it in better things of life, help you attain the state, where your mind is calm, under your control, just useful and nothing useless.

Instead of waiting for a miracle in your stressed life, one just need to do is to clean up the junk from your mind, place and set things properly, and remove its garbage. This is the only way towards the ultimate and most powerful aspect of life, i.e. inner peace.

Motivation

In an era, where everything is based on competition and a person is competing with thousands of its rivals or even himself, there are times when a person attains some negative thoughts in his mind. Even, working for long hours, when an employee doesn't feel satisfied by the output he is delivering, he becomes unhappy with his life. Unable to cope up with the exam stress and other pressures of life, youth tend to lose interest in study. Similarly, when you have put on extra flab and pounds on your body, the laziness to wake up and hit the gym would definitely degrade your health.

In all the above situations, there's just one magical word which is missing in their lives. It is self-motivation. Everyone in 21st century has become so exhausted racing after time and money, that when it comes to cope up with worse situations of life, maximum of people fail. When he/she is unable to achieve the set target or reach their destination or goal, they give up.

Personal Mentoring

Self-motivation is the treatment for all those thousands of people, who left hope in adverse situations. The best tool for self-motivation is the positive thinking. The time person starts thinking beautiful and good, the situation starts changing. The right attitude makes you believe that if one can't control the worse, he definitely can change the worse. This positive attitude and thoughts during such circumstances is the major tool to boost up your skills to achieve the set goals and accomplish the destined place, rank or status.

Self-Motivation is a natural process, which would come at the right time of life, when you need it. When a person's conscience compels to stop being contented and gratified for what you have, because you deserve much better, is the time one needs to open up the doors of mind. It's the time when a person starts to change the situation, rather being the continuous victim of persisting adverse state. It's all about self-encouragement. When a person starts thinking that he/she deserves better and has the capacity to make things better in life, the enthusiasm to change circumstances will boost you up to achieve and accomplish. The will power to say that Yes I can, is the only driving force behind self-motivation.

Beside the will-power, it is important to believe in your worth. You need to make yourself believe that the best in your life can only be brought by you. Nobody other really cares for what one wants in life. It's you who have to set your standards high. Instead of millions of distractions in life, a self-motivated person always stands proud and never let himself go off-track from the set goals. Shifting way the focus from your aim would always take you away from your destined goal.

Sometimes we feel motivated for a day or two, and steadily the motivating force drains from our mind. Here, what a person needs is to find out, what inspires him and motivates him to do the task. There is a strong connection between your inspiration, goals and success. Self-motivation should always be succeeded by a reward or fear. Here, you need to set small goals in life. Every time you achieve the goal, you need to reward yourself with anything, may be a pair of shoes or even a chocolate. But, if the goals are not accomplished, it's high time to remind yourself about the consequences of the delay. This would keep you motivated to achieve the set goals.

So, if you are feeling motivated, set your goals, accomplish them because life has many great surprises waiting for you to unfold them. Keep motivating, yourself and others.
