What Causes Heart Disease?
Heart and blood vessel disease, also known as heart disorder, includes numerous issues, more of which are due to a process known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a situation that develops when a substance known as plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it more difficult for blood to flow. If a blood clot forms, it could actually stop blood flow. This may lead to a coronary heart attack or stroke.
A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to the heart tissues is blocked by a blood clot. If this clot cuts off the blood supply completely, the muscle supplied by that artery may die. Most people continue to survive first heart attacks and return to their usual lives to revel in many extra years of productive years. But having a heart attack does imply that you have to make some lifestyle alterations.
Heart Disease And Fish Oils
According to scientists, fish oil, cocoa extract and phytosterols could offer new hope in fighting against heart illnesses. Present treatments towards atherosclerosis are not that entirely amazing and there were numerous disappointments on promising substances which have been identified by more than a few drug discovery trials.
The new study suggests that combining marine fish oil, cocoa extract and phytosterols into a nutritional supplement could present new hope in the fight for heart disorders. This study was done by scientists from Cardiff University and South Wales-based nutritional supplement manufacturer, Cultech Ltd. The study examined the knowledge of mixing the three elements as a method of preventing atherosclerosis or ‘furring’ of the arteries. The results were published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Making use of a sequence of cell- based models, the study determined that combining the three elements helped inhibit key procedures associated with the progression of atherosclerosis. One of the researchers remarked, “A variety of active food ingredients have been shown to impart beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease although little is known regarding their actions when taken in combination. Therefore we set out to examine what happens when you combine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (found in marine fish oil), flavanols (found in cocoa) and phytosterols. The study found, in cell-based models, that combining the three ingredients could, potentially, help halt the progression of atherosclerosis. The challenge now is to take our findings and examine whether they translate into humans.”
He further continued, “Ultimately, our common goal is to help prevent people from developing atherosclerosis, and this collaborative work opens up new avenues for further research on the use of nutritional products in the prevention and treatment of the condition.”
Atherosclerosis is the major motive of coronary heart disorder, killing roughly one person every 34 seconds and is liable for around a third of all global deaths. Present treatments for atherosclerosis aren’t fully amazing and there had been countless contemporary disappointments on promising agents that have been identified through more than a few drug discovery programs.
A researcher from Cultech Limited remarked, “Dr Ramji and his team have been instrumental in facilitating innovative research in this field and we are hopeful that continued collaboration will give rise to further successful projects in the future.”
