Maintaining a healthy diet always yields benefits for you. Since nothing can be done about your family history but you can control your diet intake. It has been shown in a research that by eating foods high in antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E, you can lower the risk of cataract. Also, if you have been diagnosed with cataract already, in that case as well, it will slow its growth. Some fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C are Kiwi, citrus fruits like orange, limes and grapefruit, green and red peppers, broccoli and tomatoes. On the other hand, vegetable oils like sunflower, wheat germ and safflower are a rich source of Vitamin E. Nuts like almonds and green vegetables like spinach are also included in this list. However, it is advised to consult a doctor first.
- Quit Smoking at the earliest:

One of the basic ways to prevent cataract is to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun by wearing sunglasses. The UV rays actually cause damage to the protein in the lens of your eyes. Therefore, when you wear a sunglass, note that it blocks 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays along with screening out 75-90% of visible light. The frame should be close to your eyes and have a gray tint.
- Get regular eye check-ups done:
Getting regular eye check-ups is a very tedious habit. It is suggested that you get an entire eye check-up done in every 2 to 4 years if your age is between 40 and 64. If your age is over 65, then you should get your check-up done in 1 or 2 years. Your doctor will monitor your eye health and will update you on the same.
