 Brain

In the United States, researchers have finally made the connection in regards to how we process pain “ how we all process it differently “ through the inner workings of the brain. The research study has been released and includes detailed information showing the results of MRI scans that were done in accordance with people’s perceived pain threshold. The findings suggest that differences in a person’s grey matter from certain areas of the brain are corresponding to how people react to pain.

Dimensions of the Brain

The brain is composed of both grey and white matter: the grey matter is responsible for processing information while white matter is responsible for coordinating communication between the different areas of the brain. In order for researchers to conduct the study, a healthy set of volunteers were taken and tested for their individual sensitivity levels for pain by applying heat to areas of the arm or leg with temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Those that participated in the study then had MRI scans which recorded the images of their brain structure.

The Link Between Higher Pain Intensity and Grey Matter in the Brain

From the research conducted, it was deduced that those with the highest measured intensity ratings had less grey matter in areas of the brain that were involved in attention control and internal thoughts. These areas of the brain include the posterior cingulate cortex and also two areas that are considered to be a part of the default mode. These areas are the precuneus and select portions of the posterior parietal cortex. The flowing of free thoughts (referred to by many as ‘daydreaming’) in the brain occurs in the default mode network, a group of connected areas in the brain. Those that have a high default mode level of activity would exhibit a reduction in sensitivity to pain.

Controlling Pain and the Posterior Parietal Cortex

Some parts of the posterior parietal cortex are more important for attention control tan others and those that have the ability to focus their attention are more capable of keeping their threshold for pain at a minimum and under control. The findings further support the claim that in the future, there will be more improved ways of classifying, diagnosing, and treating pain. Ultimately even, the prevention of pain will be a possibility. The results of the study can one day help doctors understand how to formulate the best treatment options for those that have bouts of chronic pain and conversely how to more effectively treat them. What this study has also shown is that once pain enters the picture, brain structure is changed, even if temporarily.

The Future of the Findings

The results of the study ultimately will have an important impact on the future of pain management. Potentially, the findings could help to pinpoint a person’s sensitivity to pain and thereby find better tools and techniques to combat it. As more research is conducted, development of newer procedures are set to revolutionize the way pain is detected and treated. The findings suggest that differences in a person’s grey matter from certain areas of the brain are corresponding to how people react to pain.

For expectant mothers, it can be quite a daunting task to know all of the health concerns related ensuring a healthy pregnancy. The added responsibility of eating properly for two is one that many woman find intimidating and many often look for assistance from manuals and advice from friends and colleagues. With so much information out there, an overload is possible and so it is necessary to know which foods are beneficial for optimal health during pregnancy. There are many foods available out there tat can help mothers get the nutrients they need for themselves as well as their baby. It is not necessary to consume them all, so long as expectant mothers meet their daily quota.

The Protein Power of Eggs

At only 90 calories each, eggs pack an enormous amount of protein, containing over a dozen vitamins and minerals that expectant mothers can benefit from. Because a developing baby is growing at an extremely accelerated rate inside the womb, pregnant women must consume enough protein to care for their child’s levels as well as their own. Choline, which eggs are rich in, provide the baby with overall growth and brain health. Eggs that contain omega-3 fats aid in vision and brain development as well. Women concerned about saturated fat can take note that the levels found in eggs are lower than those found in other foods and if they are healthy ten one or two eggs a day as part of their diet is recommended.

Salmon

Consuming salmon has long been considered a healthy way for pregnant women to maintain optimal levels of protein in their diets, providing a very good source off omega-3 fats. Although there are many types of seafood that can be harmful for expecting mothers (mackerel, swordfish, shark), salmon is one that has only trace amounts of the methylmercury which can be especially dangerous for an unborn child’s nervous system. The recommended servings for salmon per week for expectant mothers is 12 ounces or less.

Beans

Of all vegetables, beans contain more protein and fiber than any other. With so many different types to select from, there are bound to be some that pregnant women like. When a woman is pregnant, the amount of fiber present in her diet can play an even more important role in preventing constipation and hemorrhoids. Beans are an excellent source of folate, iron, zinc, and calcium.

Sweet Potatoes

What many people do not know is that the orange hue of sweet potatoes comes from carotenoids, the plant pigments that convert to vitamin A in the human body. Additionally, sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber, and folate. Plus they are inexpensive and can be cooked in a variety of ways, and can go from a snack to a dinner time treat.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are high in fiber and vitamin E, selenium, and others, thus making them a section of foods collectively known as superfoods. From popcorn o barley to quinoa, there is a long list of grains out there that can maintain the healthy status you are striving to have before the birth pf your child.

Walnuts

Walnuts If you’re an expectant mother that doesn’t particularly prefer eggs or fish, then another alternative are nuts “ specifically walnuts. Known as one of the most densely packed plants with omega-3 fats, only a handful of them are necessary to propel a mothers unborn child’s brain growth. So any mother that is constantly on the go can always find time for a few as a snack.

Greek Yogurt

Compared to just regular yogurt, Greek yogurt has nearly double the amount of protein, making it ideal for pregnant women. As an excellent source of calcium, it provides women with enough protein to aid in the development of their baby’s bones and teeth. Women that don’t have enough calcium while pregnant run the risk of deterioration o their own nutrition and health alongside their baby’s.

Vegetables of the Dark, Green and Leafy Variety

Kale.

Spinach.

These are just two examples of vegetables that are packed with vital nutrients and vitamins for expectant mothers. These vegetables promote healthy eyes in a growing fetus and are loaded with vitamins A, C, and K.

Lean Meat

Everyone knows that lean meat is a high source of protein, especially when the fat is trimmed or removed from the edges. Red meat that is bought should ideally be between 95 and 98 percent free of fat.

Brightly Colored Fruits

Exotically colored vegetables are usually packed with more nutrients and are a great way for expectant mothers to maintain a healthy pregnancy. From purple to red, yellow to white, fruits in these colors provide a broad range of minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins to both mother and child. The more varied the fruits the fetus is exposed to, the more likely it is to accept them after birth.

According to new research that has just been released to the general public, the results have shown that babies of late stage pregnancy mothers may have an elevated risk of high blood pressure in their lungs due to the usage of antidepressants. The study was conducted by Sophie Grigoriadis at the Sunnnybrook Health Sciences Center in Ontario, Canada, and released in BMJ. They discovered that these antidepressants are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and with further analysis, it was discovered that infants experienced a heightened risk for developing pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) when exposed during a pregnant mother’s later stages of pregnancy.

Knowledge is Power for Pregnant Women

Although the study indicates that the risk is relatively low for pregnant mothers, they still should be made aware of the possibility. Currently, estimates are that for every 1,000 infants born, 2 of those will suffer from the condition. The study also went on to show that SSRI exposure early in the pregnancy did not increase the risk for PPHN. The study stressed the importance of making all women aware of even the small chance of PPHN from SSRI exposure in late pregnancy. Education is the first key in combatting the risk, as well as counseling for women that contract it. For those that were exposed early on in their pregnancy there seemed to be no risk of developing PPHN according to the study.

The Background on Antidepressants

Commonly used to treat major forms of depression in patients as well as anxiety disorders, antidepressants not only include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but also serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). The danger of taking these lies in infants developing PPHN, which can result in hypoxia, which is a deficiency of circulating oxygen. As a fetus, the lungs are not necessary for oxygen transfer, but as the fetus grows into a fully grown infant, however, lung capacity is necessary for oxygen transfer and requires a high amount of blood flow. Before the current study released these results, earlier ones had made a connection between antidepressant usage and persistent pulmonary hypertension. This further research has led to a dearth of new information that now must be disseminated to pregnant mothers.

How PPHN Is Diagnosed

Pulmonary hypertension is diagnosed when a baby has difficulty pumping oxygen into his or her lungs, and throughout the body’s entire bloodstream. If left untreated, it ca bdeadly “ ven fatal “ and even potential lifelong consequences. For many doctors, it is up to patients to determine what options they want to consider when assessing the risks and potential effects of taking drugs. Most doctors opt to begin a form of psychotherapy in lieu of drugs. I patients sufer from extreme forms of depression, then medication is inevitably prescribed.

The Debate Rages On

For as long as antidepressant drugs have been available to patients, so has the debate among doctors over their usage during pregnancy. Over time, the debate pendulum has swung back and forth as new research has emerged. Indeed, most doctors concede there is no one direction or answer to fit all cases and each pregnancy must be treated as the singular case that it is. The current M.O. is that case-by-case analysis of each pregnant mother is the best way to go.

Weekend Drinking

Many people out there erroneously believe that being a weekend warrior hat drinks only on the weekends cannot possibly be as bad on overall health than drinking only on the weekends. But research has shown that binge drinking, which has become increasingly more popular worldwide, may be more harmful than many know. For those out there that consider themselves weekend drinkers, it is important to remember that even drinking solely on the weekends can have ill effects on the body, in various ways. If you suffer from anything from a hangover to insomnia or even longer term effects like liver disease, there are some things everyone should keep in mind the next time they go out for a weekend of excessive drinking. These effects include both the mental and the physical.

Liquor and Its Effects on the Body

Insomnia and alcohol are just a few of the physical effects that coincide with consuming inordinate amounts of alcohol over the course of a weekend. Many people believe that drinking coffee for a hangover will alleviate the symptoms, but in fact, this is even more detrimental as alcohol is officially recognized as a poison and can have severe consequences when used to excess. The human body can process only about a unit per hour of alcohol, so weekend drinkers should try to compensate for this by allocating water in between drinks, as the body can shut down and stop functioning properly from too much alcohol. Many people who drink too much during the weekend will experience a significant retardation of their brain functions, an irritable stomach, dehydration, lower body temperature, and more. Behavioral problems that can arise from alcohol abuse can be just as harmful and include passing out, vehicular accidents, loss of valuables, and income loss related to employment. These are all problems to consider when drinking excessively.

How Detrimental Is Weekend Binge Drinking to Health

Many people assume they are aware of many of the potential problems associated with excessive binge drinking, but in fact, there are many more out there that can lead to long-term problems related to vital organs. Weekend drinking can lead to such physical defects as heart problems, sexual problems, neurological problems, and sexual problems like male impotency or fertility issues. Many people who drink excessively over a long period of time are also susceptible to depression and relationship problems as mood is more often affected based on alcohol dependence. Concentration can also be impaired over time as it has been shown to compromise motor skills, speech, judgment, and balance. There is also the risk of cancers like liver disease and increased risk of stroke. For women that drink more than the allotted amounts, there is an increased likelihood of the fetus developing fetal alcohol syndrome.

The Difference Between Binge Drinking and Drinking Everyday

Depending on how often you binge drink and how much you consume are the biggest factors in determining how detrimental binge drinking may be for an individual. Although drinking daily can have more adverse affects than drinking solely on the weekend, if a person binge drinks more often, they can still experience the same symptoms and problems that long-term daily drinkers exhibit like cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, pancreatitis, and heart disease.

The Short Term Effects of Binge Drinking

Many people who drink are familiar with the very well-known tell-tale signs of binge drinking: vomiting, memory loss, upset stomach, hangover, and headaches. There are also those that have physical accidents from over-drinking like falling and car accidents. Drinking too much can affect your heart as well as coordination. In extreme cases, excessive drinking can cause vomiting and choking on your own vomit. Even worse is hat alcohol poisoning can lead to death in a small number of cases.

The Long Term Effects of Binge Drinking

The long-term effects of drinking too much on the weekend can be adverse as well as sometimes, irreversible. Many people can become psychologically or physically dependent on consuming alcohol and are much more likely to suffer from brain or liver damage. Although there are many studies that show drinking limited amounts of red wine a day can be beneficial to overall health, drinking too much can cause irreversible liver damage.

Five Tests Every Woman Should Take

Blood Pressure

One of the most basic, but often overlooked, medical tests that every woman should take is their blood pressure. Millions of people suffer from high blood pressure and it is one of the biggest killers of women worldwide. Monitoring your blood pressure is an integral component of guarding your health against heart disease. In many cases, there are no warning signs or symptoms when it comes to high blood pressure and many people often have early signs of it with no physical ailments. As a general health rule of thumb, 120/80mmHg is considered normal blood pressure. If you should score under or above this score, there may be need for further testing. Checking for high blood pressure should be a test that is performed at least every two years. For women that are on birth control, a screening should be done more regularly as their intake can potentially affect blood pressure. For self-tests at home, the optimal time is early in the morning before outside sources affect your stress levels. During the actual procedure, an inflatable strap is placed around the upper part of your arm and then a stethoscope near the inner part of your elbow. Once the cuff is properly inflated, a reading is taken as it gradually deflates. You can also do the test at most pharmacies.

Screening for Diabetes

Millions of women develop type 1 or type 2 diabetes every year and if left untreated, it can lead to heart and kidney disease and a host of other illnesses as nerves and blood vessels are damaged. From the age of 35 onwards (and even as early as 20 if your family suffers from a history of diabetes), screenings should be done. If you suffer from obesity or even if you are overweight, you should check more regularly as this is just one of the high-risk factors associated with diabetes. Others include significant weight around the mid-section, high cholesterol levels, and if you are of Asian, Pacific Islander, or Middle Eastern lineage. During the test, your fasting plasma glucose is measured from your previous night’s activity. If you are tested and the results return as borderline for diabetes, n oral glucose test may be administered. If you also suffer from thrush infections you should specify that you wish to be tested against diabetes, as this is known as a symptom common in diabetic individuals.

Mammogram Testing

Women should regularly self-test in the shower against breast cancer as young as their mid to late teens. Breast cancer screening is one of the most essential tests any woman can take especially after the age of 40. If a mother or grandmother had breast cancer, testing should start earlier. From the age of 40 on, a screening should be done at least every two years as early detection is the best way for effective treatment. During a biopsy, the breasts are compressed between plates as images are to to detect abnormal amounts of calcium in the breast tissue. The best time to have a screening is a week to ten days after your last period.

Pap Smear

Pap smears are widely viewed as one of the most uncomfortable procedures a woman can go through but they should make it mandatory. Pap smears should be performed every two years after a woman becomes sexually active to test for cervical cancer. Research has shown that having a test at this interval can reduce risk by nearly 90%. Even with impressive odds such as these, it is also reported that the majority of women do not have regularly scheduled pap smears. During the test, a speculum is placed into the vagina as the gynecologist takes a closer view of the cervix area. From there, a swab is run through the area. The procedure takes about a minute and then the cells are examined in the lab and any abnormalities are reported within two weeks.

 Skin Testing

Skin cancer should be identified as early as possible to treat against melanoma or even death. Skin testing should be done as early as the mid-20s depending on the family history and the type of skin involved. Moles on the body should be checked periodically for any malignancy. In some cases, mole mapping should be done for those that look particularly suspicious.

Five Tests Every Man Should Take

 The Importance of Screening

Men that regularly schedule medical screening tests greatly increase their health optimization levels. It should be ingrained in all men the importance of seeing their primary care physician on a regular basis.  Screenings are basically regular checkups to ensure proper functionality for your body’s vital organs.

The overwhelming majority of men love nothing about paying the doctor a visit, but there are some medical tests that can save men’s lives and should be taken regularly.

Testicular Examination

90% of men that detect testicular cancer early increase their chances for survival. If you are a white male under the age of 40, it is even more important to get tested as there is a greater risk for Caucasians. To check your testicles, you can start at home. While in the shower, roll each testicle at a time between the thumb and fingers to feel for any tenderness or lumps. Cancerous tissue feels hardened, like beans. You should also check the testicles for size and distance. Each testicle should measure nearly an inch and a half long. If they have grown smaller or less distant, a check to the doctor is necessary.

Prostate Examination

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, affecting 1 in 6 men. The prostate aids in producing the fluid that creates semen and is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The walnut-sized prostate gland should be checked every year after the age of 40. The actual examination takes only a few seconds and is virtually painless. The doctor will simply take lubricant to a gloved hand and feel around for irregularities and if the prostate is larger than usual.

 Guaiac Examination

The Guaiac Test (also known as the ‘poop test’) can be done at the same time as your prostate examination. During your prostate test, the doctor can take a small sample of your stool to examine. After applying a solution, the doctor can tell almost immediately if there is blood in your stool, which is one of the signs of colon cancer. A home test, also known as the Hemoccult kit, is available at your local pharmacy.

Colonoscopy Test

Colon cancer is one of the most dangerous cancers affecting men in the United States. Colorectal cancer affects the lower region off the intestines and is curable in 90% of all cases if it is detected early, then it can be easily treated and cured. It is still one of the deadlier forms of cancer, third after lung and prostate cancer. Compared to other men’s tests, the colonoscopy test is more involved, however, it only has to be done on average of every ten years. Before the actual test, a special diet that includes laxatives must be followed. In some instances, an enema may be necessary before the procedure. During the test, patients are sedated, sometimes using a general anesthetic. A colonocope is then placed into the colon to check for any polyps which are signs of the onset of colon cancer. If there are any polyps, they can be immediately removed and ten the tissue further tested for any cancerous cells. The entire process lasts approximately thirty minutes and there is no pain involved other than many patients experiencing grogginess after waking up from the procedure. Flexible sigmoidoscopies are to be performed every five years with a colonoscopy every ten years. If there is a family history of colon cancer, testing should be done before the age of 50.

Testosterone Examination

Checking for testosterone levels involves taking a small sample of blood that can check for a man’s overall health. Men that suffer from low levels of testosterone are more likely to be overweight, suffer from diabetes, fatigue, or depression. In addition, men that have low testosterone levels are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis. As men age, testosterone levels naturally drop, which affects sex drive and erectile function. If men suffer from lower levels of testosterone, doctors can prescribe anti-estrogen pills, gels, or even injections that can help balance out levels. By following a good diet and vigorous exercise, lower levels of testosterone can be corrected by reducing fat around the midsection.

How to Boost Your Testosterone

Although the word testosterone tends to elicit negative overtones in recent years, it is actually important to have adequate levels of testosterone in the body. Steroids are not only inclined to make one more aggressive and violent. It should also be noted that from the age of about 27 onward, our testosterone levels begin to decline steadily. It is during these times that your body will have to compensate for this drop in levels and what you can take naturally to fix this situation. The following are ways to dramatically alter your lifestyle by boosting your testosterone levels.

The Advantage of Lean

The more lean you are, the less likely that your hormones are at unstable levels. Studies have shown that the more fat your body carries is proportional to the levels of testosterone in your system. By adding an exercise regimen into your life, you can substantially increase your testosterone levels by reducing excess fat. People that sleep on average between seven to eight hours a night tend to have more optimal testosterone levels compared to those that sleep less or more than that. It is also advisable to take a nap during the days when you have the possibility to.

 Optimal Health Through Sleep

There is strong connection between good sleeping patterns and optimal health, which extends to the testosterone in your system at any given time. Many research studies suggest the minimum of six hours, with up to eight being the ideal optimization level. Not all fats are bad fats. Olive oil in its raw form, avocado, nuts, fish and alive oils, and lean animal meats are some examples of foods that can ensure you receive the correct amounts of healthy fats. These high levels of fat help your body to produce testosterone which in turn increases productivity and function.

Consumption of Less Alcohol

Reducing your alcohol consumption can dramatically impact your testosterone levels as well as your overall health. Studies suggest that beer is more detrimental and that by minimizing alcoholic intake, you can optimize your health index. It is not necessary to completely give up alcohol completely as many assume. In fact, a drink or two can even be healthy for the body.

Don’t Forget Breakfast

The most important meal of the day is breakfast and this is the most important period of the day to give your body the high proteins and low carbohydrates it needs. These can be found in eggs, and red meat, as well as green vegetables like spinach, and a wide assortment of beans and nuts. People that follow a high protein, low carbohydrate diet report higher energy levels and an overall sense of being full and also being leaner from this health approach. Vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, and kale contain indoles, that reportedly remove bad estrogen from the body. Spinach and blueberries decrease inflammation and support alkalinity, which increases lean muscle mass for overall health. All of these agents indirectly benefit with testosterone levels.

Don’t Slave at the Gym

To boost your testosterone levels, it is not necessary to spend your entire life in the gym. Your training sessions should be kept under an hour, preferably no longer than 45 minutes a session. Anything over 45 minutes tend to lead in a decrease in testosterone levels.

Reduce Your Stress

Not sweating the small stuff is the name of the game. The higher your stress levels are, the lower your testosterone levels are. Adopting a stress-management plan can help to maintain an acceptable level of stress and increase your mental focus. Studies have continually shown that training too much can also significantly decrease testosterone levels. High intensity aerobics classes can help to boost your testosterone levels as well and examples include cardio finishers, interval sprints, and strongman training. This can also include sexual activity, which can reduce your stress levels as well as increase testosterone output.

Supplement Your Way to Better Health

For those that are looking for supplements to use, there are a few on the market that can boost testosterone levels. DHEA at 25-200mg a day has been shown to dramatically increase the testosterone levels of people over the age of 40. Magnesium oil and zinc citrate also increase testosterone levels and should be added to any dietary change for those of a certain age. Vitamin D is also another nutrient that body needs and can be attained through sun exposure.
