Antibiotics can be used to treat bacterial infections only and they are not efficient for viral infections. This test allows personalized and tailored medicine which can play a crucial role in combating with antibiotic resistance.¯

The point-of-care test became prominent during the winter of 2015 when, during the study, doctors at Southampton General Hospital have seen a large number of patients visiting the hospital with respiratory problems who were infected with a strain of influenza which is not covered by the seasonal flu vaccine.

According to a new study, elevated levels of beta-2 microglobulin, a protein found in women's blood was connected to a higher risk of ischemic stroke.

The study discovered that an elevated level of beta-2 microglobulin, which is found on the surface of many cells, was connected to an increased risk of ischemic stroke among women. The most common type of stroke, ischemic stroke occurs when there is a blockage in the blood supply to the brain. Beta-2 microglobulin may also be a marker for inflammation.

“Latest studies have discovered connection between beta-2 microglobulin and heart disease,” said study author Pamela Rist, ScD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and  also a member of the American Academy of Neurology. “But, less is known about the connection between beta-2 microglobulin and ischemic stroke.”

Researchers observed at women with an average age of 61 participated in the Nurses’ Health Study who provided blood samples from 1989 to 1990 and who had no history of stroke or cancer. Participants were completed the questionnaires regarding their medical history and lifestyle every two years.

To know more about beta-2 microglobulin and any possible connection to stroke, researchers assessed the protein levels in 473 study participants who later had an ischemic stroke as well as 473 participants of the same age who did not have a stroke. They were also matched by other factors that could influence stroke risk, such as whether they smoked or underwent hormone treatments. After an average duration of nine years from the beginning of the study, the strokes occurred.

Beta-2 Microglobulin Levels And Stroke Occurence

Researchers observed that participants who later had an ischemic stroke had elevated levels of beta-2 microglobulin than those who did not have a stroke. The average level of the protein was 1.86 milligrams per liter in participants who had ischemic strokes, where it was 1.80 mg/L in those who did not have a stroke.

The researchers segregated the participants into four groups according to their levels of the beta-2 microglobulin. Those in the highest quarter of beta-2 microglobulin levels were 56 percent more expected to have a stroke than those in the bottom quarter. In the top quarter, 163 of the 283 participants had strokes, compared to 106 of the 227 participants in the bottom quarter.

The results were adjusted for additional factors that could impact stroke risk, like physical activity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Rist mentioned that drawbacks of the study are that it was performed mostly among white women and that it could not observe any changes in protein levels.

“Given the high rate of disability from stroke, it is critical to find people who may be at increased risk of this disease. This protein might be a marker that could help us in the battle against stroke,” explained Rist. “Additional studies are required to verify if beta-2 microglobulin levels can be altered by means of lifestyle changes.”

A Novel Approach That Could Effectively Treat LeukemiaA recent study has shown a protein signature which can be useful in treating leukemia. There exists a competition between some proteins that further creates an imbalance which consequently results to leukemia.

According to the study, the activation of STAT5 protein leads to competition amongst other proteins that result in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, also called as ALL. Initial activation of this STAT5 protein could be prevented and the natural balance of proteins can be restored by developing a drug. By this way ALL might be treated more efficiently.

Among all newly-diagnosed cancer patients in the U.S, blood cancer accounts for 10 percent. Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a type of cancer in which too much immature lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell are produced by the bone marrow. ALL is found in three out of every four leukemia cases and is mostly seen in children less than five years of age.

They found that cases with high ratio of imbalances in STAT5 to IKAROS or NF-kB proteins had worse prognosis.

Frietze explains that This study offers a novel way to risk-stratify patients and find those who are at higher risk or relapse and may so require more intense treatment to cure their disease.”

Exercise May Improve Heart Attack Survival, Study RevealsAccording to new research, exercise is related to improved survival after a heart attack. Increase in physical activity can increase the survival chances.

The last author of this study, Professor Eva Prescott, University of Copenhagen, Denmark said, We are aware that exercise protects individuals from having a heart attack.  As per animal studies, myocardial infarctions are minor and are less likely result in death among animals that have exercise. We wanted to find out if physical activity was associated with minor myocardial infarctions in humans.¯

There were 14,223 participants of the Copenhagen City Heart Study included in the study, who never had stroke or heart attack. Their levels of exercise were evaluated at baseline in the years 1976-1978 and identified as moderate, light, sedentary or high.

Participants were observed through registries till 2013. Totally 1664 persons had a myocardial infarction among which 425 lost their lives instantly. The researchers compared the levels of exercise between those who deceased immediately due to myocardial infarction and those who survived. Results showed that participants who had physical activity were less likely to lose their lives due to myocardial infarction.

Exercise and Survival Rates

Participants with light or moderate / high levels of physical activity were 32% and 47% less likely to lose their lives than the sedentary ones.

Prescott mentioned that participants who had adequate exercise were more likely to survive while sedentary participants were less likely to survive from their myocardial infarction. There was a dose-response relationship; hence those participants who had enough exercise survived. People who had exercise may develop collateral blood vessels which assure them that the heart keeps on getting adequate blood after a blockage. Exercise may also enhance the levels of chemicals that improve the flow of the blood and minimize injury to the heart from a heart attack.¯

According to Prescott, The results of this study needs to be confirmed prior to making any strong recommendations, since this was an observational study. But it is good to continue exercises even after atherosclerosis which may minimize the severity of a heart attack if it happens.¯
