What to do and not to do with anxious children

If you are a parent and one of your children is chronically anxious, it is a difficult situation for you. You do not want your child to suffer but some of your actions may make the anxiety wars. What can you do to help your children escape the cycle of anxiety. Let's find out.

Help your child to manage it

Instead of trying to eliminate anxiety completely, you need to help your child to manage it. You do not have to try to remove stressors that trigger the anxiety. You can teach your children to learn to tolerate their anxiety and function as well as they can even when they are anxious.

Do not avoid things

Do not try to avoid things just because they make a child anxious. If you avoid those things, it may make your child feel better in the short term, but it will reinforce anxiety over the long run. Taking the child or the thing away will teach the child that coping mechanism and the cycle has the potential to repeat itself later.

Express positive but realistic expectations

It is better not to promise a child that their fears are unrealistic. Sometimes, negative things or difficult situations will arise which may make the child anxious. Instead of promising them that such situations will never happen, you can express confidence that they are going to be okay and that the children will be able to manage it. You can teach them how to manage and face those fears and that will help to bring down the anxiety levels. It will also provide them with confidence.

Respect feelings but don't empower

If a child is terrified of something which is necessary, you will probably understand their fear but do not amplify them. Listen to your kid and be empathetic but also helps them to understand The fears and help them to face those fears. Tell them that you are there for your child and I will help him or her to get through.

Encourage the child to tolerate her anxiety

Let your child tolerate her anxiety and let her know that you appreciate the work she is doing in order to dollar into anxiety. Let them engage in life and FaceTime anxiety and fears. This will help them to become habituated to it and gradually the fear will lose its power over your child. It may take some time but your child may be able to handle the stress better and the situation or the stressors may not be able to create anxiety in future.

Show them how to

You need to model healthy ways of handling anxiety. Your child can look at you and learn how to do it and that learning will be better. There are multiple ways that you can help your kid by teaching him harder to handle anxiety. Show them by your example. Examples are always better than words.
