Brazilian Butt Lift
A Brazilian butt lift is a popular cosmetic procedure done to create more fullness in your buttocks. It involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body to your backside. The procedure is noted for its natural-looking results. Usually, the procedure is done under general anesthesia but local anesthesia may be used where a smaller amount of fat is involved. The fat is removed using liposuction and transferred to the backside. This will require the surgeon to make incisions in the skin. When performed incorrectly, a BBL surgery can be fatal as the fat may enter the large veins and travel to the lungs, causing respiratory distress and death. Thus, every step of the procedure has to be done carefully.
Marking and Anesthesia
The area where the additional fat will be injected is marked with a marker. The surgeon will also outline the incision areas where the fat will be injected. The cuts will be approximately two to three millimeters in length, about the size of a rice grain. The surgeon will try to hide the incision marks as best as they can, and some will be hidden by the buttocks crease.
To make you comfortable during the procedure, anesthesia will be used. General anesthesia is the more common option but local anesthesia may be used, with intravenous sedation. The type of anesthesia administered depends on you and the surgeon, but it’s quite possible to undergo a Brazilian butt lift procedure without general anesthesia.
Prepping for Surgery
The area from which fat will be removed is known as the harvest site. Both the harvest site and the buttocks will be cleaned with an antibacterial soap to disinfect them and reduce the chances of an infection. Next, the incisions will be made at the buttocks area and harvest site, after which the infiltration and liposuction cannula are inserted. The infiltration tube is for injecting fluid into your fat and the liposuction tube is for suctioning fat from the area. The incisions made at the buttocks will be the entry site for the fat transfer. Tumescent fluid is injected at both sites to make the fat injection tolerable, to numb the area of treatment and to narrow the blood vessels to minimize bleeding and bruising.
Harvesting
The fat will have to be taken from various other areas to obtain enough fat for transfer. This will be done using liposuction. Common areas for harvesting the fat include love handles and the abdomen. The fat in these areas tends to be stubborn even with weight loss, thus the reasoning here is that when placed in the buttocks, it will withstand the effects of weight loss. The fat is collected in a specific container, which keeps the fat from contamination, and prevents air from interacting with it. Later, the fat will be transferred to the buttocks.
Injection
Once the fat has all been collected, it will be transferred into the canister and allowed to separate from the fluid. The fluid will then be discarded and the fat transferred to smaller syringes attached to another cannula for injecting fat into the buttocks. The smaller syringe allows for precise injections and the fat is injected and the incisions closed. Steri-strips may be used to cover the incisions after they’ve been closed by sutures or strings.
