Types of scars

There are several types of scars seen in case of different people.

Keloid scars

If you get a scar and aggressive healing happens, you may see keloid scars. They may extend beyond the original injury. In some cases, such a scar can hamper movement. Such type of scars is treated with the help of surgery, steroid injections or silicon sheets which helped paint flattening the scar. Crypto therapy or freezing therapy where liquid nitrogen is used may also be used for treating such keloid scars. It is possible in the first place to stop such keloid formation by using pressure treatment or gel pads with silicone immediately after you are injured. This is one type of scars which is generally seen in case of people with dark skin.

Contracture scars

This type of scar is generally seen when your skin is burnt. It will tighten your skin and as a result of that you may not be able to move. Sometimes they can also go deeper and if that happens, it may affect muscles and nerves.

Hypertrophic scars

These are some raised, red scars which are similar to keloid scars but they generally do not extend beyond the boundary of the injury. Treatments of such scars include steroid injections for reducing the inflammation. Sometimes silicon sheets are also used to flatten the scars.

Acne scars

These scars are generally seen if you had severe acne. Acne scars can be of different types and may include deep pits and scars that are angular or wavelike in appearance. It has treatment options but those options depend on the type of acne scars.

Treatment options for scars

Different scar problem may need different treatments. The following are the most common treatment options used in case of scars.

Over-the-counter or prescription creams, gels or ointments

There are different products available in gel, cream or ointment form which can be purchased over-the-counter or through a prescription of the doctor. They're mostly used for treatment of scars resulting from cuts or other injuries or wounds. If there is scarring from cosmetic plastic surgery, you need to ask your doctor whether over-the-counter treatment is possible in that case or not.

Surgical removal treatment

If you are suffering from deeper scars, skin grafts, excision, dermabrasion or laser surgery may be necessary for treating your acne problem. If you are going for a skin graft, a piece of skin from another area of your body is used to treat the scar. If you have scars that impair your function, you can opt for surgery. However, before you go for such a treatment, wait for sometime because many scars fade and become less noticeable after sometime.

Injections

In case of keloids or hypertrophic scars, you can get steroid injections as a treatment. It can be used alone or in combination with other treatments. Your doctor is the best person to decide about it.
