Hot or cold compresses

If you use hot or cold compresses, it can help you to get relief from sciatica pain and inflammation. Heat treatment is effective because it relaxes tense muscles and thereby reduces the compression on the sciatic nerve. Cold treatment is essential for reducing swelling. It also helps in eliminating the pain by numbing the area. You can alternate cold and hot compress but always end with the cold compress. If you use a steamed towel, it will be more effective. However, you should not use cold compresses if you are suffering from circulatory problems.

Exercises

Exercises can help you to get rid of sciatica and the pain and inflammation associated with it. Like in any other problem, here also exercises can help you if you regularly perform it. You can start a regular exercise program immediately after a sciatica flare-up. It is important to focus on the abdominal and back muscles if you want to get relief in sciatica. When you strengthen your core muscles, it will help you by offering quick recovery from sciatica flare-ups. Knee to chest stretch will eliminate the irritation of the sciatic nerve. It will also help you by improving flexibility of your lower back. This is a very simple exercise that can be learned easily and which is very effective.

There are other exercises that will help you which includes spinal rolling, floor twists, knees rocking, back extensions, yoga poses, sciatic mobilizing stretches, back block etc. In yoga, especially the cat cow pose and pigeon pose will help you to get relief from lower back pain and sciatica pain.

Massage

Massage therapy is also effective against sciatica pain. It helps the body to heal itself. Such massage is more effective if the sciatica problem is caused by a muscle spasm. Such massage will also help you by releasing the tension in your body. It will stimulate circulation of blood and will also increase the range of motion.

Take an oil like St John’s wort oil and massage the affected area 2 to 3 times a day. Continue this until you get relief. You can add 3 tablespoons of nutmeg powder to 1 cup of sesame oil and heat the mixture. Once it cools down a little bit you can massage the affected area with the warm oil mixture. You will need to do this a few times a day for few weeks to get relief from sciatica pain and inflammation. Some patients also go for trigger point massage therapy once every day. There are some trigger points in your body that causes pain in the lower back, side of the thighs and buttocks. The trigger points that are commonly known in this case are gluteus medius and minimus muscles. Turmeric is effective against sciatica because it is a natural ingredient that has anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric contains a compound called as curcumin which is beneficial in reducing inflammation and nerve pain. You need to add one spoon of turmeric to 1 cup of milk and then boil the solution. This is your healthy drink. You can add little bit of honey to it. Now you can drink it twice daily and you will soon see improvement. You can also take turmeric supplements three times a day for several weeks to get better results.
