Alzheimer's

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most serious illnesses plaguing the medical world. Alzheimer’s is a fatal disease marked by short to long-term memory loss and degenerating brain function. The symptoms of the disease worsen with old age and most elderly patients are not able to do simple cognitive tasks nor even remember their family members. As of yet no cure has been discovered for Alzheimer’s. However, recent studies have unearthed new facts about the disease that, while not providing permanent cures, may help protect more people from contracting it.

Coffee as a preventative measure

A study conducted at the Universities of Bonne and Lille may have discovered a simple measure to help avert Alzheimer’s. Doctors Christa E. Muller and David Blum performed this study on mice and constantly fed them caffeine. The caffeine had a beneficial effect on their tau deposits, which are clumps of tau proteins that disrupt neural transmissions among cells in the brain and thus cause the onset of Alzheimer’s. This discovery showed promising results.

Two experimental groups of mice were given the tau protein while only one was fed caffeine and the effects on both were closely observed. The caffeine acted as an adenosine receptor antagonist, blocking the action of adenosine receptors and resulting in more favorable effects in the tau proteins of the mice. These mice developed less memory problems than those that were not given caffeine.

This study has achieved some very assuring results for Alzheimer’s patients. It is scientifically proven that blocking the adenosine receptors has a positive effect. Research is already under way to synthesize more receptor antagonists that may lead to the production of drugs that could be used to treat the disease. While the production of such a drug may still be a long way off, coffee may be used a simple and practical way to ward off Alzheimer’s.

Treatments to target protein bundles

New trends in the study of Alzheimer’s treatments have been aimed toward eliminating protein bundles. These protein bundles have the same effects that tau deposits have on neural transmission. Techniques have been developed to block the production of beta-amyloid protein clumps called plaques as well as to prevent them from forming.

Vitamin D associated with decreased risk

Vitamin D produces numerous health benefits, including extending remission for cancer patients, and is also linked to a decreased chance of contracting Alzheimer’s. Vitamin D is prominent in many areas of the brain and reduces the risk of brain defects and cognitive impairment. Studies have shown that patients with up to 25 to 50 nanomoles per liter of vitamin D in their bloodstream were half as likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those with an amount of 25 or less.

These statistics are still merely observational and there has not yet been a definitive link established between vitamin D and Alzheimer’s. Scientists argue that the vitamin should not be used in place of Alzheimer’s medications and treatments. However, the numerous experiments and studies all agree that vitamin D levels of higher than 50 nanomoles per liter decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and promote overall optimal health in the brain.

Alzheimer’s does not only strike the elderly

Because most Alzheimer’s patients are elderly, many people have the misconception that it is only the elderly who are capable of getting the disease. While old age greatly increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, it is possible for people younger than 65 to contract what is known as early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The symptoms of the disease are similar in young and old people, however younger people are faced with the unfortunate task of having to cope with daily tasks than the elderly. Young to middle-aged adults are also at risk of getting different forms of dementia, such as front-temporal dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and Korsakoff’s syndrome which is caused by constant and unregulated alcohol consumption. The symptoms of early-onset Alzheimer’s include memory problems, difficulty in performing simple routine tasks, difficulty in carrying out conversation and understanding simple visual images and relationships, becoming more withdrawn and less social, and being prone to sporadic changes in mood.

Oftentimes Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are misdiagnosed in young adults as depression, effects of stress and fatigue, and other conditions. It is because of this that young adults are often not able to get the right treatment early on. This stresses the need to develop more treatments for early-onset Alzheimer’s and to spread more knowledge of its symptoms so that young patients may seek help right away.

DNA methylation may play a part in Alzheimer’s

A recent study by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Rush University Medical Center has discovered that the methylation of DNA in the brain may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. DNA methylation is a process that affects the very structure of DNA. In this process a methyl group joins the cytosine or adenine units of a DNA nucleotide. DNA methylation is essential in several genetic processes, including genomic imprinting and gene transcription. Deficient methylation has been linked to the formation of cancerous tumors.

This study showed a direct link between methylation levels and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers conducted epigenome studies on donated DNA samples and discovered high methylation in 71 gene markers that have been connected to the disease.

Blood Sugar

There is a better way of monitoring blood sugar using laser

Diabetic people have a way of testing their own blood sugar through the use of a pin prick to draw blood. While it may be a little bit disconcerting doing this to yourself, this is the fastest way to initially know your level of blood sugar especially if you're having attacks. Researchers from Princeton University, however, found a way to eliminate the pin prick process by developing a laser to determine an individual's own blood sugar.

The Laser Method of Blood Sugar Monitoring

Claire Gmachl, a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Eugene Higgins cited the importance of incorporating engineering process to regular people with regular needs in their daily lives. The said laser to determine the blood sugar is developed in order to make the lives of people with diabetes easier by eliminating frequent or regular drawing of blood for tests.

In a published article on Biomedical Optics Express, the laser works by pointing the laser to the palm in which, it travels inside, passing through skin cells without damaging the cells. It is then absorbed by molecules composed of blood sugar. To determine the rate of blood sugar, the level of absorption must be first detected in order to provide an accurate blood sugar level.

When testing for blood sugar, glucose monitoring should be within the level of 20% below or above the normal level to be deemed valid. The laser monitor showed an 84% accuracy that somehow surprised the developers giving, it is their first time to test the laser monitor. Sabbir Liakat, the author said they were amazed by the results of the tests and its accuracy rate.

The effectiveness of the Laser Blood Sugar Monitoring

Although the laser monitor is said to be working with impressive accuracy, Liakat said, they are still trying to improve it. The experiment started as a small group of engineers working on a low budget, low profile discovery. Because of its various characteristics, the group had a problem adjusting its cooling system as well as the size of the apparatus which they are currently working to improve it. In the summer, they hope to mobilize the experiment to acquire a broader scope in terms of samples and they are currently targeting clinics to get their measurements.

The frequency of the laser's infrared is what's making it work perfectly. When using the laser, not all frequency works the same as it can also be determined by the kind of substance the laser is made. The comparison made to test the level of blood sugar using the laser monitor was conducted by the researchers by experimenting it to three healthy individuals. Each of them were tested for blood sugar using the pin prick method and the laser method. After this, they were required to eat at least 20 candies that are very high in sugar and tested again. The pin prick showed a more accurate level of sugar, however, the laser even though said to be in its developmental stage recorded a blood sugar measurement that is still within the range of acceptable measurement.

Other Beneficial Uses of the Laser

The laser monitor is seen not only to help people with diabetes, but also to other medical problems that needs the same kind of testing. Different kinds of laser produces a different frequency of light that can immensely make a significant difference to each experiment, however, researchers confirmed that while laser lights show different frequencies, they may show the same amount of recorded blood sugar level. The key in determining an accurate record is to make sure you know the kind of frequency a laser makes.

It is no secret that previous studies of the said invention has been hindered by many setbacks from the design to its maintenance. Researchers have worked day in and out to be able to improve the products in such a way that it is going to be a household product for diabetic people. In the years to come, diabetic people will not have to injure the pain and stress of having to draw blood from them in order to monitor their glucose level, instead, they will acquire this laser device to be comfortably used at home.

A quantum cascade monitor produces a cascaded frequency that can determine a certain level of blood sugar. A helium neon laser on the other hand, produces a laser band light. Two different outputs with only one result and that is specific level of glucose in the body. These are just two of the several ways a laser frequency can help in monitoring glucose level.

The same type of discovery was made by a group of German researchers calling the process of using infrared to determine the blood sugar level as the sweet melody of glucose. By using a photo acoustic spectroscopy (PAS), they able to apply a painless wave of laser light to the skin without damaging the cells. Through this, they measure the sounds recorded as glucose tries to absorb the light. The team, however experienced disturbances in their experiment and these are mainly caused by disturbances caused by humidity and temperature. Researchers then use the signals in determining the level of glucose found in the skin fluids one hundredth of a millimeter found beneath the human skin.

The inventors of these devices have one goal in their mind and that is to provide a painless and most comfortable way to monitor blood sugar level. These inventions are seen to benefit people with diabetes and required to have their sugar levels monitored every single day.

No universally effective treatment is available for keratosis pilaris. There are different treatment options available for treatment of this problem. There are skin care recipes available for it. If the patients follow a regular skincare program, they often have good temporary improvements. The treatment for the problem should be continuous. The list of lotions and creams that are used for offering remedy is long. However, the problem may completely cure without any treatment at all.

Keratosis Pilaris

Medical care

The best results in treatment of k
eratosis pilaris may be found using combination therapy. The general measures are taken for prevention of excessive dryness of the skin, which include soap-less cleansers like Dove, Cetaphil etc. Lubrication is a very important part of the treatment in this problem.

In case of mild problem, improvement can be achieved with basic lubrication. For such basic lubrication, over-the-counter lotions for moisturising are good enough. Such over-the-counter lotions include Cetaphil, Purpose, or Lubriderm etc.

For severe keratosis pilaris other therapeutic options are used which include different types of lotions and creams. Such lotions include lactic acid lotions (AmLactin, Lac-Hydrin), retinoic acid products like tazarotene (Tazorac), tretinoin (Retin-A), and adapalene (Differin), alpha hydroxy acid lotions such as Glytone, glycolic body lotions etc. Creams used in the treatment include urea cream like Carmol 10, Carmol 40, Carmol 20, Urix 40), salicylic acid (Salex lotion), and topical steroid creams such astriamcinolone 0.1%, Locoid Lipocream etc. Sometimes, the doctor may also prescribe compound creams that contain multiple different ingredients.

The affected area should be washed once or twice everyday using a gentle cleanser. In case of acne prone skin, therapeutic cleansers may be used for cleaning the skin. Such therapeutic cleansers include salicylic acid, Proactiv, GlySal, or benzoyl peroxide.

If you're using a lotion, massage it gently on the affected area. Do that for 2 to 3 times a day. In case of inflaming skin, bland moisturisers should only be used until the inflammation is gone.

If your doctor prescribes emollient-based topical steroid cream to be applied on the inflamed, red rash areas, then do that once or twice a day. Such steroid creams include Locoid Lipocream, Cloderm etc. Generally, such a course runs for 7 to 10 days. After the inflammation is remitted, the residual dry, rough bumps can be healed using a compound preparation that includes 2-3% salicylic acid in 20% urea cream. Such a compound should be used twice daily.

In case of severe keratosis pilaris, it can be treated orally using isotretinoin pills, which is generally prescribed for several months. As isotretinoin is a strong medicine, so it is reserved for resistant and severe problems. In case of persistent skin discolouration known as hyperpigmentation, fading creams are used for its treatment. Such creams include kojic acid, hydroquinone 4%, and azelaic acid 15-20%. However, care should be taken as high concentration of hydroquinone can cause irritation of the skin.

A new stroke therapy showing promising results in the first trials done in case of humans. This therapy uses stem cells from the bone marrow of the patients. This is promising because the stroke therapy uses stem cells help in triggering the growth of new brain tissue and blood vessels in the areas of the brain of the patients damaged due to stroke.

stroke

In the study, stem cells were extracted from the bone marrow of the patients. In a pilot study, five patients underwent the treatment at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London. The patients showed improvements in their disability measures. The study was also found to be safe.

The therapy used a set of stem cells known as CD34+ cells, which are available in the bone marrow that creates the blood cells and the lining cells of blood vessels. The study done on animals found that, these cells can help in improving the recovery from stroke in the case of animals. They do not develop into brain cells, but they help in the release of chemicals that causes triggering of the growth of new blood vessels and brain tissue in the damaged area caused by stroke.

In the study, the patients were treated with the new therapy within seven days of a severe stroke. It's a little bit early to treat patients suffering from stroke, but such early treatment may help in improving recovery of the patients. The researchers took a bone marrow sample from each patient and they isolated the CD34+ cells, which were later infused into an artery supplying the brain. No other study has used these cells so early after the stroke.

Four of the five patients who underwent the study, had severe type of stroke. Only 4% of such patients stay alive and independent after six months. All four of these patients took part in the study were alive and three of them became independent after six months.

The study shows that the new treatment is a safe one and will also help the physicians to treat people or early for better benefits. The improvements of the patients were very good. However, to find the effectiveness of the new therapy, more tests will have to be completed before going for larger trials.

The study was the first trial that extracted stem cells from bone marrow and injected the cells into the damaged brain area. Keyhole technique was used for injecting the stem cells. The researchers involved in the study also believe that using the data and the clinical findings and new drug can be developed based on the factors secreted by the stem cells. Such a drug can be stored and used on patients immediately after being brought in for stroke in the emergency room. On one side, it will reduce the minimum time for therapy of those patients and on the other side, it will increase the positive results from such therapy. Further studies may also help to find out the benefit of starting therapy early for the patients suffering from stroke, when at present therapies for stroke patients are administered after six months or later.

Millions of people suffer from stroke every year. And the survivors of such stroke attacks are affected in different ways – mentally and physically. Many of them do not recover their independence. Send cell therapy can be a new and exciting potential method of treating patients suffering from stroke. However, that may take some time. With more trials and more data, soon the scientists will be able to find a solution for increasing the recovery of stroke patients.

telemedicine

Telemdicine in the healthcare system

Stroke is usually characterized by the abnormal activity of the brain caused by the lack of blood supply in the brain. During this time, the person may experience inability to move normally. Stroke is a medical emergency that needs to be attended as soon as possible. It is also fatal, especially when the patient is old and has a medical history of heart attack.

In a published research conducted by the American Heart Association, telecommunications has played a great role in coordinating doctors to stroke patients especially in poor areas. Today, telecommunication has improved and is continuing its services to local areas in providing medical support to the less fortunate people.

The Telemedicine Benefits in Stroke

In Bavaria, Germany, the process is called telemedicine in which, patients who suffered a stroke has a 24 hour access to doctors for proper consultation and analysis of their laboratories. In extreme cases, videoconferencing is also available in regional places. Linked Stroke Units are formed to be able to give a complete prognosis for a certain patient in a hospital.

The TeleStroke has now gained the trust of emergency personnel through the years. This only implies how the service is working on emergency cases, most of which are attended as soon as they are diagnosed of either a stroke or a mild one. For 10 years, researchers have tried to observe how the telemedicine is positively affecting patients and the following is what they found out. A drug tissue said to bust blood clots has serviced stroke patients from a minimal 2.6% to 15.5 % in the process. The significance of telemedicine has increased the patient's chance of survival.

The quickness of service has increased 50%, thus showing a relatively more quantity of patients being treated than the ones targeted by the American Heart Association. Patients get faster turnaround on the results and treatment of stroke than any other hospital.

At the time of the stroke, a patient saved at least 15 minutes receiving treatment and first aid medical attention. During a stroke, time is gold. Seconds, minutes or hours play a different role in improving your chance of survival. The issue of transferring a patient regardless of its condition has been minimized. Telemedicine allows a patient to stay in a hospital without actually being transported to another hospital that has better facilities.

Peter Muller Barna lauded the unending support of its affiliate clinics and centers for their unending support and quick response to such cases. Telemedicine has indeed improved the quality and quickness of service, especially those who are assigned to regional locations, but still allow their services to reach even more people.

TeleStroke Units are said to have been initially introduced to regional hospitals in 2003. They were installed in 12 regional hospitals that don't have enough equipment and capability to treat neuro cases. Telemedicine allowed them to have access to stroke centers around Bavaria. At least 15 TeleStroke Units were again recorded in the year 2012.

In its constant willingness to service the less fortunate people, it has already set a record of not less than 31, 864 consultations. Because of the endless access and quick turnaround of results, stroke patients, including those that have experienced mild ones started to go to these hospitals increasing their numbers from a minimal 19% to a huge jump of 78%. This statistic alone proved the effectiveness of the system.

A Promising Medical Tool

Stroke has been dubbed as one of the most traitorous illnesses as it arrives unexpectedly. There are no certain symptoms that will tell ahead of its impending arrival. In fact, even the healthiest person can suffer from stroke. The best way to minimize your risk is to live a healthy lifestyle and stay away from things that triggers a stroke. Although older people are likely to experience a stroke, teenagers on the other hand are no exception.

The success of the program only shows how effective it can get during emergency situations. Doctors and surgeons are known to be more cooperative using this medium of communication because of the inability of patients to reach them. As opposed to what Muller Barna said, while it has proven to be very effective and helpful, there's a lot more to be done in order to serve a broader scope.

One of the advantages seen in this type of medical attention is the limited need to transfer patients from one place to another in order to get treatment. Telemedicine consolidates all the right doctors and surgeons to attend to a specific case.

This innovation has ceased the burden of stressing the patient from transferring them to one hospital to another. It has been by far one of the most unprecedented programs made that is all about helping patients in the fastest way possible without compromising the kind of service given.

Telemedicine, although it can be considered as the latest technology in medical history also has the ability to determine an emergency case, in which a patient can receive initial observation through a video provided showing all the tests and procedures done for the patient. It is not only a money saving process, but greater than that, the time and stress that is being cut from the whole process.

Researchers urged the United States to push with the program in order for patients to take advantage of the program and give them less stress in finding the right doctor to attend to them. Telemedicine is also nominated to be the center of attention at the next American Heart Association convention.

Diabetes

Living with diabetes is difficult, but the illness is highly manageable if you know how to take care of yourself with the proper diet, treatment and lifestyle. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease affecting about 380 million of the worldwide population and the incidence continues to grow. According to the International Diabetes Foundation, this number doubles by 2030. There are Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus and the type 2 diabetes accounts to about 90% of diabetes cases. Diabetes involves changes in the blood sugar level in the body owing to the inadequate production of insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or the body cells fail to respond to insulin (Type 2 diabetes).

odd-720

What happens when you have Type 1 diabetes?

When the body does not produce insulin, as in the case of Type 1 diabetes, the body is unable to convert sugar to provide the body with the energy it needs to carry out its physiological function. As a result, the person will experience the symptoms of fatigue, weakness, blurred vision and extreme hunger. It is also common for the individual to experience frequent urination, unintended weight loss, mood changes and irritability. This condition is most common among children and the young adults, hence Type 1 diabetes mellitus is also called as juvenile diabetes. About 10% of cases of diabetes are Type 1 and patients with this condition need to take insulin injections to help the body sustain its normal function in utilizing the blood sugar. Being insulin dependent is a lifetime consideration in terms of a person's lifestyle and diet.

What happens when you have Type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of diabetes cases and it is a chronic condition involving the abnormal process of metabolizing sugar in the body to convert sugar into energy. The body cells resist insulin or it may not produce enough insulin for the proper sugar maintenance in the body. The condition occurs during adulthood and the person does not require insulin injection as in the Type 1 diabetes. Hence, Type 2 diabetes mellitus is also called as non-insulin dependent or adult onset diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease and it can chronically get worse. Individuals who are overweight or have a high body mass index are more at risk to the condition. The older population is also more susceptible to the disorder. Type 2 diabetes produces the symptoms of extreme thirst, fatigue, weakness, blurred vision, weight loss and slow healing wounds.

Various Ways of managing diabetes

While diabetes is a lifetime chronic disease, there are different ways to manage the condition. Sometimes the condition can be overwhelming, especially to a person who understands that they have to deal with their condition throughout their lifetime. However, positive management of your condition will help you get through the difficulties of living a life with diabetes with these tips:

1. Take your medication as prescribed regularly

Reversing the negative effects of diabetes in the body is highly manageable with medications. By taking your medication regularly, exactly as prescribed by your doctor, you can control your blood sugar level to maintain the adequate level of sugar metabolism that the body needs. With a normal functioning metabolic process going on, you can control the occurrence of diabetes symptoms. Medication treatment or regular insulin injection can help you live a normal life without the risks of developing heart disease, neuropathy, visual problems and other possible complications of diabetes.

2. Observe regular exercise

An exercise of 30 minutes three to four times a week will keep the body strong and helps the body to produce and utilize more blood sugar. By exercising, you decrease the fat storage in the body and keeps the body in its ideal weight. Different kinds of exercise are beneficial in helping control the blood sugar level in the body and reverse the adverse effect of diabetes. You can mix aerobic exercise with resistance training. Start with low intensity exercise and progress in performing high intensity resistance exercise to help the body adapt to more intense physical activity.

3. Manage your diet plan

Diabetics need to be conscious about maintaining their weight to reduce the risk of more severe symptoms of their diabetes and to prevent its progression. By weight control means one needs to learn how to plan for a healthy diet. Keeping a record of the ideal meal plan helps one control their diabetes and to potentially reverse the disorder. Learning about your eating pattern will help you control your appetite better and a meal plan will give you better food choices that are ideal for your condition. Doctors, however, advise that starving yourself will not help and preventing your cravings will tend to make you eat more instead. The best way of managing your diet is to allow yourself to enjoy eating even the forbidden foods in small servings only. This will help satisfy your cravings without causing you to go through a crash diet that can produce a more disastrous effect to your condition.

4. Live a healthy lifestyle

If you like smoking or taking alcoholic beverages, it is about time to quit. Smoking can double the risk of a person of getting diabetes or it can cause their diabetes to become worse with more serious complications. Smoking can result in an increases blood glucose level and it can also constrict the blood vessels, increasing the potential complications of nerve damage, kidney disease and infection. Alcohol in drinks contains calories, which can also result in repercussions in the body weight that increases the risk of worsening your condition. By quitting your bad habits, you can improve your chances of living healthier with the ability to control your diabetes symptoms.

Extreme stress

If you’re living with anxiety, panic disorder, depression or another mood disorder, you understand how difficult it is just to maintain a “normal” existence. Even with the help of trained medical professionals, medication and all of the self-help books and relaxation techniques in the world, you face struggles that others may never understand especially when it comes to work.

For people living with psychological issues, work is often a challenging subject. Even people with jobs they love, who work in supportive environments that understand and accept their issues, may feel overstressed and overwhelmed by work. Their illness may prevent them from performing at their optimal level or even working at all.

For some, the problem might be so bad that they are actually disabled by their mental issues. Someone suffering from agoraphobia or a panic disorder, for example, may be physically unable to work. Someone who lives with a severe anxiety disorder may be unable to handle the normal stresses of an office. If this sounds familiar, you may in fact have a disability claim and be able to collect at least a portion of your income from disability insurance.

Never an Easy Case

Experts note that disability claims related to mental health are among the most challenging to file, and are often denied at least once (often more) before being approved. The reason? Unlike a physical ailment that can be proven through observable measures X-rays, medical tests, MRIs, etc. psychological disorders are diagnosed based on behaviors or self-reporting.

Unfortunately, there are those who have tried to cheat the system by claiming psychological issues that prevent them from working, meaning that without the observable signs of a real illness or injury, people claiming psychological reasons for disability have a greater burden of proof. Not to mention, given the expectations of our society, many people assume that problems like stress and anxiety are just a part of modern life. Some believe that others need to just “chill out,” or take medication so they can cope with the same issues that everyone else does.

Except as anyone with a real psychological disorder can tell you, it’s never a matter of just “chilling out.” It’s far more complex, and does have the very real potential of disrupting your life and ability to work.

Making a Claim

Making a successful disability claim based on a mental or emotional disorder is challenging, and usually requires professional help, as state laws and insurance policies vary widely.

California disability law does allow claims based on stress or anxiety, but claimants must meet specific criteria. A licensed attorney will provide more information about the law and your specific claim, but in general, you need to prove that your mental anguish has kept you out of work for at least eight consecutive working days, that the issues are exacerbated by work and that you meet other criteria, including salary and length of time on the job.

Of course, that assumes that you are covered under a state-issued disability insurance policy in California. In other states, or if you have private or individual coverage, you may have additional or different restrictions. Some policies do not even cover claims based on psychological disorders. If your policy does cover such claims, though, you can expect that your case will be thoroughly reviewed, including:

  • Reviewing your records from both medical and mental health professionals. In most cases, you must be receiving treatment for your condition, either medication or therapy or both. It’s best to have at least a 12-month history of seeking treatment for this issue.
  • Your family, friends and co-workers may be interviewed about you and your condition.
  • You may have to see an additional, insurance-carrier selected doctor for evaluation.
  • Your doctors will have to agree that your condition prevents you from working.

In short, making a disability claim based on an emotional issue involves relinquishing a great deal of your personal privacy, and may involve months of doctor’s visits, interviews and document requests. That’s why it’s so important to have a good attorney on your case before you file a claim, as these types of claims do have a higher likelihood of being denied.

That said, there are many stress and anxiety-related claims that are approved, and plenty of people who are able to collect at least a portion of their income while they learn to more successfully manage their condition. So while occasionally hating your boss or dreading a Monday morning isn’t going to get you approved for disability, if you have a severe, documented emotional or mood disorder that’s impeding your ability to work, it may be worth exploring your options.

Soon researchers may be able to find a better solution for the treatment of diseases that involve abnormal blood vessel growth including wound healing problems and loss of vision. They have identified the proteins that are critical to wound healing.

wound healing

In a research done at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, scientists have found that mice without two important proteins of the vascular system grow normally and also look healthy until they are injured. When they are injured, the wounds do not heal properly. The finding of the research has very big implications.

The results of the research will help in the treatment of different diseases which generally involve abnormal blood vessel growth. These diseases include wound healing problems in diabetes, loss of vision due to macular degeneration etc.

The scientists studied fibroblast growth factors, or the FGF family of proteins. What are these? FGF proteins work as signalling molecules and play a big role in wound healing besides embryonic development and tissue maintenance. These proteins are important as they interact with specific receptor molecules, FGFRs. FGFRs are present on the surface of different types of cells present in the human body.

Whenever your body is injured, new blood vessels grow to start the healing process. For the growth of the new vessels, blood cells and the cells present in the lining of the interior of blood vessels are important. In the study, the scientists shut down the signalling of FGFR1 and FGFR2 proteins. These are the two major mediators necessary for the FGF signal.

When the signals were shut down, even then the mice looked completely normal and they grew like any other normal mouse. When the mice were injured, however, the healing process was very slow in comparison to the normal mice. Scientists also measured the blood vessels present in the injury site and found that they were significantly less in the specific mice without the proteins.

In case of any injury, blood vessels also grow in the eye if there is an injury or disease. Scientists checked the eyes of the mice without the proteins. However, new blood vessels are not desirable in the eye because in case of any injury, it can cause the formation of scar tissue and thereby block light from going to the retina.

The new study suggests that if the FGF signalling is increased, it may help in formation and the growth of new blood vessels after an injury. It will improve wound healing in patients. It will pay much more beneficial for patients who suffer from slow or no healing like people suffering from diabetes. Human FGF2 is already available for clinical use in Japan where it is used as a topical spray for foot ulcer and wound healing.

In the same way, by inhibiting the work of the signalling proteins in the eye will help patients with age-related macular degeneration or people suffering from diabetic retinopathy. Inhibiting the proteins will store growth of new blood vessels in the eye due to disease or injury and so they won't be able to obscure vision of the patients.

The researchers also found that the FGF pathways is not involved in normal development and tissue maintenance. It means the treatments for boosting or inhibiting the signals will not affect the healthy tissues of the patient.

In case of diabetic patients, the blood vessels of the retina of fragile because of the effect of the disease. Physicians often hesitate to use any targeted therapy because that may damage the normal vessels. Now by inhibiting FGF signal in the eye will not harm normal vessels and will help the physicians to keep away any possible eye problems for the patients.

Blood Glucose

Having a diabetes is unfortunate, but there are ways that can help you reverse your blood sugar level for better maintenance of your condition. The incidence of diabetes is growing and an understanding how the condition occurs and develop can help prevent its increasing prevalence in both the young and adult population. Diabetes is a condition affecting the body's ability to process or metabolize the blood sugar in the form of glucose or it may involve the lack of insulin supply in the body that produces the blood glucose. When changes in the blood sugar level occur, it can cause detrimental physiological effects to the body known to be as the symptoms of diabetes.

Blood sugar control in diabetes

When there is an increase blood sugar level in the body, hyperglycemia occurs. This happens when the body fails to produce enough insulin or the body cannot efficiently use the insulin that is available for utilization. Hyperglycemia usually occurs when the person is unable to maintain a healthy diet, experiences a high level of stress, fails to administer the insulin injection when you have type 1 diabetes, or the body is inefficient in using the insulin in the body for proper sugar metabolism.

Diabetes is in fact not a disease of the blood sugar level in the body. It involves the metabolic disorder involving the lack of insulin production or the problem of utilization of insulin that can result in an abnormal amount of blood sugar level in the body. Insulin is an important hormone released by the pancreas that controls the amount of blood sugar level in the body. An inadequate supply of insulin can cause the blood sugar to increase and the same consequence occurs when the body has enough insulin supply, but the body cells are unable to use them for metabolizing glucose.

When hyperglycemia occurs, the natural consequence of increased blood sugar level, frequent urination and increased thirst take place. It can also increase the risk for stroke, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, obesity and cancer. This makes controlling in the blood sugar level in the body important.

How to reverse the blood sugar levels

Managing the blood sugar level in the body can decrease your risk for diabetes. Giving higher value in blood sugar management can help you reverse the potential risks for complication of diabetes and the development of other related chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and stroke.

1. Taking a blood glucose test

Using a blood glucose test provides a more accurate way of measuring your blood sugar level. Unlike before that you need to go to a doctor to perform the test, there are now portable kits for taking a blood glucose test at home. Your doctor will recommend the appropriate glucose meter that you can use and will teach you how to self administer the test at home safely. It only takes a lancing device to prick your finger in order to obtain a drop of blood for glucose testing. This is the first step that you should take in your attempt of monitoring and managing your blood sugar level.

2. Diet management

If you want to reverse your blood sugar level, it is essential to watch out on what you eat. Healthy food choices are essential in keeping your blood sugar at a controlled level. Skipping a meal, especially breakfast, is not a good dietary practice because it can only cause a shoot up in your glucose level. Without having a regular food intake, the body will likely to use its glucose reserve from the liver in order to provide the body with its glucose needs. The lack of insulin activity in the body will cause the glucose level to increase, resulting in a more disastrous effect to the body. Include in your diet foods that are effective in controlling the sugar levels in the body, such as oatmeal, green beans, broccoli, strawberries, spinach, lean meats, cinnamon and salmon. Make sure to always observe a low sugar diet to help reverse your blood sugar level.

3. Increase your physical activity

Physical activity is effective in keeping the blood sugar level in control. Exercising regularly for at least 4 hours a week, or at least 30 minutes a day is effective in keeping the glucose supply low in the body. This will help you manage your weight properly too in its ideal scale, thereby reducing your risk for diabetes. If you are driving a car frequently, take the time to walk instead if your destination is closer to home. Even this low intensity exercise can help control your blood sugar level as a form of physical activity. By making these lifestyle changes, you can decrease about 40% of your risk for developing a full-blown diabetes. Physical activity helps the body to use more glucose, thereby controlling its ideal level because it stimulates better insulin production for better glucose control.

4. Indulge in drinking coffee

A revealing study from the Harvard School of Public Health showed that coffee drinkers have a better way of reducing their risk of developing type 2 diabetes with the help of caffeine. Caffeine is known to boost the metabolic process of the body, thereby helping to use blood sugar more efficiently. Coffee also contains helpful minerals like potassium and magnesium with high level of antioxidants that increase the sugar absorption in the body.
