weight loss

Taking weight loss supplements is an efficient method of losing weight that has caught on over the past decade or so. For many people suffering from obesity, the condition is often accompanied by other health conditions, forcing them to look for faster and effective ways to lose weight.

Experts believe that using weight loss supplements in combination with a diet or exercise program is an effective way of losing weight. Here are three examples of weight loss supplements that have received a lot of attention in recent times.

1.   Xenical for Weight Loss

Xenical is the trade name of an orlistat drug which is used to treat obesity. Xenical works by inhibiting the absorption of fats from the foods humans eat.

Xenical works together with a doctor-approved weight loss program such as a prescribed diet, exercise, and change in lifestyle. It can be used to aid with weight loss or to prevent weight gain after a successful loss of weight.

Orlistat works by inhibiting fats' absorption thus reducing your calorie intake, but doesn't block calorie absorption from other types of food such as sugar. This is why you need to continue with your prescribed reduced-calorie diet program.

Keep in mind that Xenical, taken alongside your weight loss program is effective but it can interfere with the intake of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. It is a prescription drug, and so you need to adhere to your doctor's instructions.

2.   Precose for Weight Loss

Acarbose, sold in North America under the trade name Precose, is an anti-diabetic drug typically used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2. Precose works by slowing down the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines from food.

Precose, taken together with a hypocaloric diet, has shown very modest results in obese people. Additionally, it doesn't help in maintaining weight after weight loss. Unfortunately, precose has several side effects, including severe constipation, diarrhea, liver problems, bloating, and skin rash.

3.   Naltrexone for Weight Loss

Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist that is taken by people with addiction problems to decrease their urge to take opiates. It has also been used for weight loss in people struggling with body weight. Combined with a weight loss program or an exercise program, Naltrexone is effective in weight loss with results evident within the first 6 to 12 months.

Although Naltrexone has also had positive weight loss results in diabetic people, little is known about its side effects on diabetes and other preexisting conditions. Additionally, if after taking Naltrexone for three months and you don't achieve at least a 5% weight loss, it is advisable that you discontinue its use.

Are Weight Loss Supplements Effective and Safe?

Some weight loss supplements are effective and help you lose weight faster than if you only followed a diet or weight loss program. However, you must ask your doctor about the side effects of the supplements.

Most weight loss supplements are prescription drugs, but you might be tempted to take more for faster results. This is very risky because the supplements affect other areas of your body hence why you need to follow the instructions to the letter.
