Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a chronic skin condition. This condition, different sized lumps are seen under the skin. The lumps maybe pea sized or marble sized. It is also called as acne inversa. These lumps are seen in the places where skin rubs together. There are found in armpits, groin, breasts and buttocks.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa

These lamps are deep-seated. They are painful and can be broken upon. They’re full of foul smelling pus. There may be tunnels connecting one lump to another which generally form under the skin.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa mostly happens after puberty. It may stay for years and gradually worsen. It is important to diagnose it early and start the treatment to manage the problem. Otherwise, lesions may start developing on the skin.

Symptoms

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is generally seen around hair follicles. It is found in the places where oil and sweat glands are found. That is why; it is most commonly seen in armpits, groin, under the breasts, inner thighs and anal area. The problem may show up in one area or different areas of the body.

Different types of signs and symptoms associated with Hidradenitis Suppurativa are

Blackheads

Hidradenitis Suppurativa results in blackheads which appear in pairs. They may also appear in a double barreled pattern.

Red, tender bumps

The bumps or lesions that appear become enlarged and they break open draining pus. The draining pus may have foul odor. Besides these bums, the patient may also experience itching, burning and sweating.

Painful, pea sized lumps

Some hard lumps of the size of a pea may show up under the skin. They may stay for years. These lamps may enlarge and cause inflammation.

Leaking bumps or sores

These are open wounds and they may take lots of time to heal.  They may result in scarring. Tunnels may also develop under the skin.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is often seen after puberty. It may start as a single painful bump that may stay for weeks or months. In most of the cases, it continuously worsens and shows up in different parts of the body. Some people may experience only mild symptoms. Different factors like too much weight, stress, heat, hormonal changes, excessive perspiration etc. may result in worsening of the symptoms.

Causes

Causes of Hidradenitis Suppurativa are simple. If the hair follicles are blocked or if they are inflamed, the problem may arise. It is not sure why the blockage happens but there are many different factors which may result in the blockage. Such factors include hormones, cigarette smoking, genetics, excess weight etc.

Risk factors

About 1% of the population is affected by Hidradenitis Suppurativa. There are several factors which may increase the risk of this disease-

Age- it is mostly seen in case of young adults.

Sex- women are more prone to this problem in comparison to man

Family history-hereditary factors may result in Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Complications arising from Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis Suppurativa may cause different complications. It happens when the problem is severe and persistent. Some of the complications that may result from the disease are-

Scars and skin changes

In case of severe infection, rope likes scars may appear on the skin. Pitted skin or dark patches of skin are some common result of Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Restricted movement

If there are open sores and tissue scars, mobility becomes limited and painful. It is more so in case of patients are affected in the armpits or thighs.

Obstructed lymph drainage

Hidradenitis Suppurativa also affects different lymph nodes. If scar tissue is formed in these nodes, then it may interfere with the lymph drainage system. If that happens, swelling of the arms, legs or genitals may happen.
