Though the disease plagues roughly two percent of the population in the United States, most of us do not know what exactly fibromyalgia is. Fibromyalgia is characterized by severe, widespread pain with at least eleven tender points across the body. There must be no other health problems that could manifest this chronic pain. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include sleep disruptions, fatigue, headaches, tingling and numbness, jaw uncomfort, memory problems, irritable bowels, and morning stiffness. These unpleasant symptoms are usually experienced by women, as opposed to men, with a ratio of nine to one, respectively.
Unfortunately, the cause of fibromyalgia is still debated and has yet to be pinpointed to one explanation. Stress is a commonly agreed upon factor in the expression of the disease based on many of its symptoms which are generated by abnormal stress responses in the autoimmune system. Another aspect of fibromyalgia being studied is the role that the central nervous system may play in the syndrome. A chemical imbalance could be to blame for many of the symptoms depicted in fibromyalgia cases.
Because we have yet to find a cause for fibromyalgia, determining what treatment options are best for these patients in serious need of any relief is difficult. Upper cervical chiropractic work has been proven extremely beneficial for individuals with Fibromyalgia, as one part of a team based medical practice that includes different types of healthcare to give the patient the most well rounded treatment possible.
Dr. Montoya of Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Arizona explains, “Upper cervical chiropractic care is if focused on the alignment of the skeletal structure and how this structure is connected to our joints, muscles, and ligaments. When one aspect of this system is not functioning properly, a lot of other health problems can arise.” Upper cervical chiropractic care reduces pain levels in patients with fibromyalgia by increasing the range of motion the spine and the muscles that it innervates. Fibromyalgia causes muscles to tighten and compress, so any stretching and adjusting can quickly relieve pressure that builds up over time.
Not only do upper cervical chiropractic adjustments relieve pressure and pain, but it allows for the spine to experience some movement. The stiffening of the spine and surrounding muscles are a slippery slope that lead to more pain and stiffness if the spine is kept from moving. By realigning the spine, the significant stress that has been put on these vital vertebrae can be mitigated.
The functioning of many parts of the body are significantly impaired with fibromyalgia. Because a multitude of different nerves enter and exit at the level of the spine, it can be a major contributor as to why the parts of the body that these nerves control are not working as they should. Proper alignment of the spine and vertebrae are important in ensuring that the spine is doing its job supplying nerves. Upper cervical chiropractic alignments are a safe and effective way to do just that.
Because of the long standing belief held by upper cervical chiropractors that the body and mind are one connected unit, upper cervical chiropractic care promotes healing in other areas besides pain alleviation. Dr. Montoya says, “After an alignment, most of my patients experience a wave of relief and clarity that is hard to find through other healthcare practices. For individuals with fibromyalgia, this release of stress often gives patients a feeling of relief beyond certain tender areas.”
Upper cervical chiropractic care is a great solution for pain relief, both long and short term, for patients dealing with fibromyalgia. Because the spine and muscles tend to be altered in individuals with fibromyalgia, it is important that the upper cervical chiropractor that you are consulting with is knowledgeable about the disease and its symptoms. Although upper cervical chiropractic alignments may not take care of all of the difficulties that stem from fibromyalgia, the technique can be combined with other practices and has been proven to give significant relief to those battling the disease.
