For people who suffer from various psychiatric and neurological conditions, brain stimulation has become an increasingly important treatment option in the recent decades.

Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep Brain Stimulation

Brain simulation techniques can be divided into two broad categories, invasive and noninvasive. Both of them work by targeting specific sites in the brain to adjust the overall brain activity. Among the most well-known invasive techniques is the deep brain stimulation (DBS) which requires a brain surgery and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This process is typically used for treated Parkinson's disease and this process requires an electrode to be inserted in the brain. Among the noninvasive techniques is the transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) which can be administered from outside the head. This treatment is currently approved for treating depression.

Brain stimulation has resulted in dramatic benefits to patients with such disorders, which has motivated researchers to test if it can be useful in treated patients suffering from other diseases. The problem is that doctors have been unable to pinpoint which are the ideal sites to administer simulation in a given patient for a given condition.

A new study led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggest that brain networks which consists of the interconnected pathways that link brain circuits to one another can assist in selection of ideal spot for brain stimulation therapies.

Michael D. Fox, MD, PhD, First author of the study, an investigator in the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation and in the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center at BIDMC remarked that although different types of brain stimulation are currently applied in different locations, it has been found that the targets used to treat the same disease are nodes in the same connected brain network. This can have a direct implication on how brain stimulations are administered to treat diseases.

For example, in order use brain stimulation to treat Parkinson’s disease or tremor an electrode need to be inserted deep in the brain. Getting the same effect with noninvasive stimulation is difficult, as the spot is deep in the brain. However, by looking at the brain’s network connectivity, sites can be identified on the surface of the brain that is connected with the deep spot site. Hence, that deep spot can also be stimulated noninvasively.

For this study Fox's team conducted a large-scale literature search to find out all neurological and psychiatric diseases where brain stimulation via both invasive and non-invasive techniques had shown improvement. The search found 14 such conditions namely addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, anorexia, depression, dystonia, epilepsy, essential tremor, gait dysfunction, Huntington’s disease, minimally conscious state, obsessive compulsive disorder, pain, Parkinson disease and Tourette syndrome. In the next step, they listed the stimulation sites, both deep in the brain or on the surface of the brain that was found to have been effective for the treatment of each of the 14 diseases.

In order to test the hypothesis that the various stimulation sites in the brain are different spots within the same brain network, Fox's team used a data base of functional MRI images and a technique that enabled them to see correlations in spontaneous brain activity. These correlations helped the investigators in creating a map of connections from deep brain stimulation sites to the surface of the brain. When this map was compared to sites for noninvasive brain stimulation on the brain surface, the two matched.

The study suggest that understanding the brain networks can help in understanding why brain stimulation works and how these therapies can be improved by identifying the best place to stimulate the brain for a given patient suffering from a given disease. These findings also suggest that resting-state functional connectivity can be useful for translating therapy between treatment modalities, optimizing treatment and identifying new stimulation targets.

Meditation is an approach to train your mind. You perform physical exercise to keep your body fit and healthy and in the same way you use meditation for keeping your mind healthy.

There are several different techniques available that you can use for meditation. They have their own benefits and problems. Different meditation practices require different mental skills. As a beginner, some of the techniques may not be suitable for you because it may not be possible for you to sit for hours can think of nothing.

Let’s know about a few techniques.

Concentration meditation

In this type of medication, you need to focus on a single point. You may focus on the breadth, repeat only a single word or do something else. There may be a mantra involved in it which you need to repeat while meditating. Some people may stare at a candle flame or may count beads. Buddhist people may listen to a repetitive gong. You may need to start small and gradually move forward as you can sit for longer duration. In this type of meditation, you learn to refocus your awareness on a specific chosen object. Each time your mind tries to wander of, you bring it back to that specific object. Gradually, you’ll be able to concentrate more on anything that you choose.

Mindfulness meditation

This type of meditation is a little different from other types because here you do not stay away from the wandering thoughts. Rather, you observe those wandering thoughts as they move in your mind. You do not get involved with them, you do not judge the thoughts but you try to be simply aware of those thoughts. After observing your thoughts for some time, it’ll be easier for you to see how your thoughts and feelings move in particular patterns. You will be able to become more aware of the fact that as human beings we are more likely to judge an experience as good or bad. With lots of practice, you’ll be able to get out of that and balance your inner self.

In some cases, some schools or some students may use both the techniques and combine them to get more benefits.

There are other meditation techniques available which are practice in different parts of the world. A Buddhist meditation practice is used by Buddhist monks, where they focus on the cultivation of compression. You will also find some other meditation practices known as tai chi, qui gong and walking meditation.

Benefits of meditation

We already know about the benefits of meditation. Let’s find out what it means for you.

When you regularly practice meditation, you become more relaxed. There are different types of short-term and long-term benefits of meditation. Meditation will lower your blood pressure, lower heart rate, reduce perspiration, reduce your anxiety, reduced blood cortisol levels, reduce stress and will provide you with other benefits. It will also improve your blood circulation, give you a feeling of well-being and will make your mind calmer.

However, the Eastern philosophy does not focus on the benefits or goals of meditation. It rather focuses on simply to be present getting any benefit at all. In Buddhist philosophy the ultimate benefit of meditation is liberation of the mind from attachment to different types of things which is not under its control. Since you cannot control external circumstances or strong internal emotions, it is always better to completely liberate your mind from attachment to those things and that is possible with the help of meditation if it is practice regularly for a long duration.

It's happened to everyone at some point. You wake up and, almost instantly, you know that something is off. Maybe your throat's a little scratchy, or perhaps you're experiencing some body aches.

Depending on your symptoms, it can be hard to tell if you need to take a sick day or if you're able to push through and go to work.

Keep these guidelines in mind to help you make the right decision for yourself and your coworkers.

1. You're Just Starting to Feel Sick

If you're just starting to experience symptoms and they don't seem too serious, you might be tempted to go ahead and go to work. The problem with this, though, is that the beginning of your illness is the time when you're usually the most contagious.

Keep in mind, too, that if you stay home and rest right when you start feeling sick, you have a better chance of fighting the sickness off and shortening the amount of time that you're actually sick.

Lots of people try to tough a sickness out in the beginning, but because they don't give their body sufficient rest, they end up prolonging their illness and dragging out their symptoms.

It's especially important for you to take a day off when your symptoms show up if you work with vulnerable populations like children, people with suppressed immune systems, or older adults.

2. You Have Any of These Symptoms

As soon as any of the following symptoms present themselves, you need to call in sick:

  • Fever

  • Acute diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Acute respiratory symptoms (runny nose, cough, wheezing, shortness of breath etc.)

  • Body aches

These symptoms often indicate that you are dealing with a contagious illness like a cold, influenza, or a gastrointestinal virus. These kinds of sicknesses spread fast, so it's best to protect your co-workers and stay home if you notice any of the symptoms listed above.

Even if you don't have a contagious illness, if you're experiencing any of these other symptoms, you should still stay home from work.

  • Bladder or urinary tract infections

  • Vertigo

  • Severe back or joint pain that hinders your ability to meet your work responsibilities

These conditions will likely affect your productivity, so it's better to just take a day off and let yourself recover.

3. You're Taking Medications That Will Interfere with Your Job

Many medications — especially those meant to treat the flu or a cold — come with unpleasant side-effects like extreme fatigue, foggy thinking, and dizziness.

These kinds of drugs might relieve your symptoms, but they can also make it very difficult for you to get work done effectively.

If you're not going to be able to perform well at work, or if you think you might end up making a mistake that could affect you, your clients, or anyone else you work with, it's better to just stay home and rest.

If you have lots of menial tasks that need to get done and you're not contagious, you might be able to go to work and tackle those less-important items on your to-do list. You can leave the more complicated stuff for when you're feeling more mentally sharp.

How to Speed Up Recovery

If you do decide that it's best to take a sick day, give these tips a try to speed up your recovery and get back to the office as soon as possible:

  • Sleep as much as possible. You can use a laptop desk and do some work in bed, but don't be so focused on staying caught up that you forget to rest.

  • Stay hydrated with lots of water, juice, tea, and broth.

  • Stay warm with lots of blankets, and take a hot shower or bath.

  • Try natural cold and flu remedies like zinc, vitamin C, and elderberry.

In a world where everyone is told to grind, grind, grind, it's hard to know when to take a break. But, remember that your health needs to come first.

If you're starting to feel sick, make sure you keep these tips in mind so you'll know if you can go to work or if you need to stay home.

Weight loss is a tough journey for anyone seeking to live a healthier lifestyle. It can be draining both physically and mentally if you're not seeing the results you want. More scientific studies into the process of losing weight have shown that as the body loses substantial weight, it tries extremely hard to gain it back. This process can be frustrating to many people as they reach a plateau period, but those who continue to push get over this roadblock and reach their fitness goals.

You may be wondering how those people are able to overcome their biology. The answer is simple: they stuck to healthy habits and didn't quit. If you're having trouble losing the weight, then follow these 7 expert tips on how to lose weight and stay healthy.

  1. Cut Out Soda

Cutting soda from your diet won't just cut down on your calorie intake. It stops you from putting so many artificial sugars in your body. Plus, sugar can act on your liver in odd ways, causing you to produce belly fat. Switching from soda, diet or otherwise, allows you to intake more water which will ultimately help you lose the weight.

  1. Don't Focus on Calories

People get too caught up in trying to count their calorie intake. While recording it can be helpful to some, it can be harmful and misleading to others. Often times, people will get discouraged by the lack of progress they're making even though they're sticking to their allotted calories. Other times, people mis-record their calories on accident and on purpose.

More focus needs to be put on the quality of the food you are eating. While some foods are lower in calories than others, they may not be giving you the nutrients that you need. Think of how certain foods affect your metabolism and hormones then eat according to that.

  1. Keep Things Basic

You don't need to have a complicated workout or diet to achieve your health goals. All you need to do is eat healthier overall and workout moderately-to-vigorously a few days a week. It's a simple statement but you have to figure out how to do that around a busy schedule. It's totally possible for anyone with careful planning and a day set aside for meal prep.

  1. Adjust Your Goal Weight

You probably have an ideal weight that you'd like to reach. Some people want to reach that weight in a certain time period, while other people want to reach a certain weight in general. No matter the time period, the goal weight is often unrealistic based on a number of factors. It's better to have a goal that shows improved health and a weight that you're happy with that you know you can achieve.

  1. Commit to Change

Quite a few people love to jump on the latest fad diets and cleansing teas to lose weight fast and easy. These methods offer only short-term results and require you to go through no real change. For actual, long-lasting results, you have to be committed to changing permanently for the better.

  1. Eat Delicious Food

Diets are becoming less about suffering through bland salads and more about eating delicious healthy foods that fill you. Society has coached many people into thinking that a diet is only working if they're feeling hungry, but hunger is the ultimate reason that most people fail at dieting. Don't worry about how much you're eating, worry about the quality of what you're eating.

  1. Recruit Support

Going through anything alone can be hard which is why so many people have workout buddies. Arrange workouts with friends so that you hold each other accountable and push each other to your limits. The same goes for changes in your eating habits. When you enforce a change in your diet, make sure that everyone you live with is on board to support you and, perhaps, go on the journey with you.
