For people who suffer from various psychiatric and neurological conditions, brain stimulation has become an increasingly important treatment option in the recent decades.

Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep Brain Stimulation

Brain simulation techniques can be divided into two broad categories, invasive and noninvasive. Both of them work by targeting specific sites in the brain to adjust the overall brain activity. Among the most well-known invasive techniques is the deep brain stimulation (DBS) which requires a brain surgery and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This process is typically used for treated Parkinson's disease and this process requires an electrode to be inserted in the brain. Among the noninvasive techniques is the transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) which can be administered from outside the head. This treatment is currently approved for treating depression.

Brain stimulation has resulted in dramatic benefits to patients with such disorders, which has motivated researchers to test if it can be useful in treated patients suffering from other diseases. The problem is that doctors have been unable to pinpoint which are the ideal sites to administer simulation in a given patient for a given condition.

A new study led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggest that brain networks which consists of the interconnected pathways that link brain circuits to one another can assist in selection of ideal spot for brain stimulation therapies.

Michael D. Fox, MD, PhD, First author of the study, an investigator in the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation and in the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center at BIDMC remarked that although different types of brain stimulation are currently applied in different locations, it has been found that the targets used to treat the same disease are nodes in the same connected brain network. This can have a direct implication on how brain stimulations are administered to treat diseases.

For example, in order use brain stimulation to treat Parkinson’s disease or tremor an electrode need to be inserted deep in the brain. Getting the same effect with noninvasive stimulation is difficult, as the spot is deep in the brain. However, by looking at the brain’s network connectivity, sites can be identified on the surface of the brain that is connected with the deep spot site. Hence, that deep spot can also be stimulated noninvasively.

For this study Fox's team conducted a large-scale literature search to find out all neurological and psychiatric diseases where brain stimulation via both invasive and non-invasive techniques had shown improvement. The search found 14 such conditions namely addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, anorexia, depression, dystonia, epilepsy, essential tremor, gait dysfunction, Huntington’s disease, minimally conscious state, obsessive compulsive disorder, pain, Parkinson disease and Tourette syndrome. In the next step, they listed the stimulation sites, both deep in the brain or on the surface of the brain that was found to have been effective for the treatment of each of the 14 diseases.

In order to test the hypothesis that the various stimulation sites in the brain are different spots within the same brain network, Fox's team used a data base of functional MRI images and a technique that enabled them to see correlations in spontaneous brain activity. These correlations helped the investigators in creating a map of connections from deep brain stimulation sites to the surface of the brain. When this map was compared to sites for noninvasive brain stimulation on the brain surface, the two matched.

The study suggest that understanding the brain networks can help in understanding why brain stimulation works and how these therapies can be improved by identifying the best place to stimulate the brain for a given patient suffering from a given disease. These findings also suggest that resting-state functional connectivity can be useful for translating therapy between treatment modalities, optimizing treatment and identifying new stimulation targets.

Even though it may seem that alkaline diet is another fad diet, which will disappear after some time, it may not be true. Alkaline diet has been there for a long time and because of the basic benefits it offers, it is going to stay. It is important for you because blood pH and alkalinity versus acidity and about survival and not weight loss.

Our bodies can function at an optimal level if the blood pH is just above 7.0, which is neutral or just at an alkaline level, which is higher than 7.0. If the blood pH is acidic, which means it is lower than 7.0, it can cause serious health problems.

That is why, it is important to balance your pH. Once you balance your pH level, you will notice-

  • a huge increase in energy levels
  • better digestion
  • easier fat loss,
  • less pain from inflammation related conditions like arthritis
  • better moods
  • better mental focus

And similar other many benefits

How our bodies naturally arrive with their blood pH

Our bodies' systems work better if we have an alkaline pH. But during the everyday metabolic processes which include digestion, breathing, tissue repair, elimination and others, it produces a lot of acid. So, to keep our blood pH in neutral or slightly alkaline state will need to take care of this acid and that can be done with the help of three things-water, oxygen and acid buffering minerals.

Money workout a move our bodies, the bodies produce carbon dioxide and lactic acid and both of them are acidic. We need to neutralise them or remove them from the body. Our bodies have alkaline buffers like bicarbonate and they can neutralise such acids. But if you combine that along with stress and acidic foods, than there may be too much of acid in the body. Over time, your body then can turn to precious alkaline minerals like calcium from your bones and teeth to maintain an optimal pH.

Other factors influencing blood pH

our bodies produce acids from different processes but there are a number of other factors which can affect our blood pH. Among them stress is the biggest one. When you are under stress, it forces the body's cells and make them more active as a result of that they produced more acid.

Other factors that can influence your gut pH are environmental toxins, toxins and metals in food, lack of sleep and illness.

All these factors can make our blood pH to acidic. And if you combine that with a diet which is high in acidic foods and low in alkaline foods, they can result in disaster for your body and mind.

Alkaline and acidic foods

You can classify the foods that you consume into alkaline or acidic foods.

Alkaline forming foods include most vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs, seeds and herbal teas.

Acid forming foods include most grains, meats, beings, dairy products, fish, fast food and processed foods.

For any reason if your blood pH is too acidic, you will have to add more alkaline foods. You need to maintain a ratio of 80% alkaline to 20% acidic in your body.

Why is it important?

Rizvi very important to maintain blood pH of about 7.4 so that your body's different functions can run smoothly and healthily. Our bodies have some mechanism designed specifically to maintain that level. That is why this mechanism will ensure that the blood pH level is maintained even at the cost of bone and tissue.

Different types of arthritis

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are over 100 different forms of arthritis and related diseases. The main arthritic diseases and conditions are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, gout, lupus, back pain and other musculoskeletal pain.

Osteoarthritis is where the protective cartilage inside of the joint breaks down. Over time the bones of the joint may end up rubbing against one another causing extreme pain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a condition where the joints and organs are attacked by your body's own immune system. RA is an autoimmune disease and the disease will attack the healthy tissue. When you have RA the immune system will mainly attack the lining of the joints.

Psoriatic Arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease where the immune system attacks the body and therefore causes it inflammation and pain.

Fibromyalgia is a central pain syndrome, this means that the brain and spinal cord will process pain signals differently. With this condition something that feels mild may feel more painful and it is characterized as widespread pain.

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis and it is an excess build up of uric acid that will form crystals in your joints.

Lupus is an autoimmune inflammatory that affects your joints, kidneys, blood, skin, brain and other organs. It can cause kidney problems, hair loss, joint pain, fever, rash and a sensitivity to light.

What is arthritis inflammation?

Do you experience swelling because of arthritis? Swelling is an enlarging of the skin, organs or other body parts because of a build up of fluid or an inflammation. Inflammatory arthritis is a term that describes several conditions that affect your immune system.

Arthritis doesn't always have inflammation involved. Any sort of inflammation is part of the body's immune response, meaning the body is trying to heal itself. Chronic inflammation can cause conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

What do people usually use for arthritic pain and swelling?

When it comes to pain management people will use almost anything to not feel bad. NSAID's or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used to help reduce pain and swelling. Most of these NSAIDs are in the form of creams and gels so that they can be rubbed in to the joint area.

People are using these NSAIDs along with some form of pill like ibuprofen to help pain in general. People with arthritic pain are used to having to do 2 or more things to get relief. With a patch they would only have to do the one thing.

How do patches work?

Transdermal patches are patches that stick to the skin and transfer medicine through the patch in to your skin. Not all medicines or drugs can be administered this way but it does allow for that drug to get through the skin layers and in to your bloodstream in a specific dose. Using a patch also allows for medicine to get in to your body without having to go through your stomach which may be sensitive to medications.

Drugs that are commonly administered transdermally are:

  • Nicotine
  • Opioids
  • Antianginal- Heart
  • Antidepressant
  • Transdermal Ritalin
  • Anti-nausea
  • Estrogen and testosterone
  • Contraceptive medication
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Alzheimer's treatment

What kind of patches can be used for arthritis swelling and pain?

There are different types of patches that can help with the swelling and pain for arthritis but anti inflammatory patches can keep working for 24 hours or longer. This means that someone who suffers with pain and swelling wouldn't need to take a pain reliever when they had one of these patches on. Stamina Pro anti inflammatory patches, which were created to help out athletes starts working within 15 to 20 minutes causing the inflammation to go down and pain and swelling get relieved.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death around the world and high cholesterol levels is one of the main causes of heart disease.

Oxidised cholesterol

Cholesterol is a wax like substance which is naturally present in your body and the body needs it for proper functioning. Build-up of cholesterol on artery walls is dangerous. When this cholesterol is oxidised you get oxidised cholesterol. Oxidation is the result of a normal body process and oxidise cholesterol in limit is not a problem for you but if because of a trigger somehow overproduction of oxidised cholesterol happens, it can be dangerous. Your body's immune system may mistake oxidised cholesterol for bacteria and then can try to fight it off. If that happens, there will be inflammation inside of the arterial wall and that can result in atherosclerosis or heart disease.

How do they form?

The oxidation of cholesterol happens when cholesterol particles present in your body react with free radicals. Free radicals are produced in your body as a result of normal metabolism, exposure to toxins or from disease. These free radicals cause oxidation which is like a chemical destabilisation of molecules. The oxidised cholesterol then becomes more reactive with the surrounding tissue and that reaction results in inflammation. Such inflammation can result in disease and organ damage.

The chance of oxidation increases because of the following reasons-

  • Consuming a diet that is high in trans fats
  • Smoking
  • Poorly controlled diabetes
  • Metabolic syndrome, which is often a precursor of diabetes
  • Exposure to toxins through pollution and preservatives
  • Stress

The oxidised cholesterol can inhabit the endothelium or the inner lining of the arteries in your body. They are found in the carotenoid arteries, the coronary arteries or the arteries that provide blood to your legs and arms.

The effects of oxidised cholesterol

The oxidised cholesterol that are present in the arteries can be dangerous for you because of the inflammation. Since the blood vessels carry blood to different organs and tissues of your body, the inflammation can stop such supply and may result in a heart attack or a stroke.

The oxidised cholesterol present in the inner lining of the arteries result in a compilation of inflammatory cells. Along with them, platelets which normally helps in stopping bleeding by producing clots, may create plaques in the artery. These are hardened areas inside a blood vessel. Once they are formed, cholesterol, other lipids and macrophages begin to accumulate that area and the plaque gradually grows larger. In that case, partial or complete restriction of blood flow may happen in an artery and that can result in different types of health problems including coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease or cerebrovascular disease.

Preventing oxidised cholesterol

It is possible to prevent oxidise cholesterol by focusing on eating healthy fats. Monounsaturated fats are considered anti-inflammatory and they are good for your health. If you're eating saturated fats, it should be done in moderation. You should include more fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. You should also pay attention to nutrition labels because it is important to stay away from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated foods. Natural supplements and a healthy diet is the best method of staying away and preventing oxidise cholesterol and the effects of this problem on your overall health, especially cardiovascular health.
