If you want your teeth and gums to be healthy and want to avoid different types of teeth and gum problems, you will have to care for them. Let's find out how you can care for your teeth and gums.

Teeth and gum care

There are five basic steps to caring for your teeth and gums. They include:

  1. Brushing
  2. Flossing
  3. Rinsing
  4. Eating right
  5. Visiting the dentist

Brushing your teeth

It is important to brush your teeth twice every day. If it is possible you can brush your teeth after every meal but wait for 30 minutes after eating. You need to wait because the enamel of your teeth may be softened from acid during eating and they need 30 minutes or so to re-harden. If you brush before the enamel gets re-hardened, then it may be brushed away. Brushing is important as it will remove plaque from your teeth and tongue. Plaque is nothing but a film of bacteria. When the bacteria present in plaque come into contact with food they produce acids and these acids may result in cavities.

Flossing

You need to floss at least once a day. Flossing is important because it will help you to get rid of food and plaque between the teeth. These are the places where your toothbrush cannot reach. If you let the plug stay in between teeth, they will harden and become tartar. Use a good quality dental floss while flossing to ensure that you are doing it safely.

Rinsing your mouth

It is also important to rinse your mouth. Use a good mouthwash to rinse. Mouthwashes will not only freshen your breath, they will also kill the bacteria that result in plaque and early gum disease. Use a good antiseptic mouthwash which will be able to kill more bacteria present in your mouth. You can rinse before or after you brush. A fluoride rinse is better as it can prevent teeth decay and cavities and. While rinsing, swish the mouthwash in your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds.

Eating right

If you want to ensure good dental health, you will need to eat different types of foods. You will need to minimize such foods that contain sugars and starches. Need to avoid them because they produce the most acids in the mouth and they can damage the teeth.

Always try to avoid sugary foods and specially candies because they can result in tooth decay. If you consume any snacks, it is important to brush after eating them. Starches snack foods like potato chips stick to your teeth and they can damage your teeth and gums. You need to avoid candies, cookies, cakes and pies, sugary gum, crackers, breadsticks and chips, dried fruits and raisins.

Regular doctor visit

Visiting your dentist regularly is very important to ensure proper health for your teeth and gums. You should visit your dentist at least once every six months. Regular checkups and professional cleaning are very important aspects of ensuring proper teeth and gum care. If you have any pain in your teeth are mouth or there is bleeding or swollen gums, you need to talk to your dentist immediately.
