College is supposed to be the best time of your life, but many students struggle to cope, especially in the early months. Being away from home and dealing with a full schedule of coursework for a criminal justice degree is a double whammy. It gets even harder when you have exams thrown into the mix, so it is hardly surprising that some students suffer with stress.

On top of all the other factors is the cost of going to college. Some U.S. colleges charge more than $50k in tuition fees alone, and that’s just for one year! There is little doubt that a college education is worth your time and money, but if stress about exams, money and anything else related to college is making you sick, here are some tips to help you deal with it.

Eliminate Stress with Online Study

Stress is a killer. Too much stress can make you seriously ill, so don’t ignore the signs. Some students find that choosing an online course is better for them, as living and studying at home is less stressful. An online degree in criminology from Portland State University is just as good as a degree studied in a classroom, so don’t dismiss the idea if you are feeling stressed about leaving home.

Take Some Exercise

Exercise is a great stress reliever. If you feel as if your head is about explode, ditch the books, shut your PC down, and go to the gym or for a run. By the time you have burned off some serious calories and sweated through several layers, you will feel so much better. If neither option works for you, just go for a walk in the fresh air. Some distance from your studies will do you the world of good.

Chill Out

All work and no play make Jack and Jill very dull. You can’t devote your whole life to studying without it causing a few problems. Instead of hitting your studies every night, take at least one night off and do something fun. Whether that involves dancing in a club, drinking shots, or watching a Netflix movie is up to you. As long as you enjoy it, who cares?

It is common to shut down and withdraw from friends and family when we are stressed. We don’t want to blow a gasket, so we sit in our room and think about how much work we have to do. This is not the best way to cope with stress. Instead, talk about how you are feeling. You will find that opening up about your stress should lighten the load and make you feel less alone.

A lot of stress can be avoided by breaking down large tasks into more manageable chunks. It is also better to avoid leaving work until the last possible minute. Learn to manage your time better and be more mindful about stress – and how it affects you. If you do feel as if stress is getting on top of you, ask for help.
